41301 | True...but what about 1 John 1:9? | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 2901
Thanks again for your reply. So, are you saying that forgiveness is much like redemption, justification, sanctification, reconciliation, etc. in that it is something that we, as Christians, HAVE in Christ as opposed to something we GET from Christ? If that is so, then again, who is 1 John 1:9 written to? Your conclusions seem correct. I appreciate the scripture references. But why doesn't 1 John 1:9 fit with the conclusions? Why doesn't 1 John 1:9 fit with 1 John 2:12 - '...your sins HAVE BEEN FORGIVEN YOU (past tense) for His name's sake?' Thanks for your help.
41302 | The inevitable BUT... | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 2899
Thanks for your reply. I hope my question gets attention, too, because I'm really struggling with this issue. Your conclusions definately has merit. BUT (I hate using this word) why does John seem to say that forgiveness is conditional upon our confession? "IF we confess...He is faithful and just TO FORGIVE..." This seems to imply that if we don't confess, He won't forgive. Please don't think that I'm trying to argue your conclusion. Your answer seems right. But how does this verse fit in? I've been taught (right or wrong) that we don't have the truth until all scriptures dealing with a subject correlate and do not contradict. I even tried looking at the Greek behind the text and it doesn't seem to help. Thanks.

41304 | Does His blood wash away ALL our sins? | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 2897
Thanks for your reply. However, I'm still confused. You said that, "As soon as we accept Jesus into our lives as our Lord and the Son of God, Jesus' blood washes all our sins." Is this all of our sins period - past, present, and future. Or is this only our pasts sins. If He only forgives us when we confess, then what happens if I die with unconfessed sin? Or what about sins that I can't remember? Or what about sins of omission (things that I should do, but don't). Thanks for your help.

41311 | How should we determine? | Rev 13:18 | reformedreader | 2879
Ray, Usually, (and more often than not) theomatics works because you can make it work and those who believe it works are more prone to accept the general view than conduct any serious hermeneutical study on their own. (not meant to be an insult, only observational) Doesn't it seem strange that John says to calculate the number of the beast and then proceeds to actually give us the calculation? And to whom was John writing this letter, the 1st century Jews/Christians or some unknown and undetermined century of English speaking people? It is also quite strange how we force an English translation onto the Hebrew text of Rev. 13:18. So, should we interpret 666 from the Hebrew, Greek, Latin or English alphabet? Sam Hughey |

Is 1 John 1:9 applicable to Christians? Or is it addressing those in 1 John 1:8? Are Christians forgiven by Christ's blood at the cross shed 2000 years ago or by just asking for forgiveness now? Did Jesus forgive all our sins at the cross or does He only give the ones we confess to Him?
