41263 | So...covenant to Abraham nullified? | John 14:6 | charis | 3102
Dear Sgt_Z_Squad, Is your answer, then, that the Old Covenant has been done away with? That the everlasting covenant of faith to Abraham has been nullified? Trust, friend, that I am not a Jew, nor do I defend the lack of faith toward God that the Jewish nation repeatedly manifest. However, though I understand the inability of the Law and blood sacrifice to save, the covenant with Abraham was a covenant of faith established long before the Law. Please show me scripturally where God reneged on His promise to Abraham that those individuals who have faith toward God are in His favor (His face shines upon them). Blessings in Christ Jesus, charis |

41264 | How do we know we're in the end times? | Is 1:1 | 3103
(How do we know we're in the end times?) Many fellow Christians have stated that we are living in the end times. The Bible states that there will be wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines, etc. But, these things seem to have been going on throughout the ages. Is it true that the big clue that we're in the end times is that Israel became a nation (in 1948) as stated in prophecy? |

41265 | What was the Lord's expectation? | Bible general Archive 1 | Mike P | 3089
I believe that God operates on a different time table than we do. See the following passages from Second Peter. 2PE 3:4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." 2PE 3:5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 2PE 3:6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 2PE 3:7 But the present heavens and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 2PE 3:8 ¶ But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, THAT WITH THE LORD ONE DAY IS AS A THOUSAND YEARS, AND A THOUSAND YEARS AS ONE DAY. NASB (Caps mine) I believe that the very words of scripture are Divinely Inspired. As such I cannot believe that God would make a statement in Scripture that would be misleading. We do have a sure thing that Christ will return, rest in that irregardless of when He returns. As far as eschatology is concerned we would do well to follow the instructions of our Lord in Acts 1:7-8 "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. " NASB There will be a generation that will "remain alive" when the Lord returns for that generation His return will be imminent. I do however believe for us to say that we are that generation would be presumptuous at best. Mike Piles |

41266 | Invite Jesus into you LIFE, not HEART... | Rom 6:23 | Centurian | 3109
There are two (at least) words that I find are used in ways which seem to me to be non-functional? They are heart and love. Dealing with the heart (save love for another day)....how can one really "accept Jesus into their heart?" The heart is only a member of the total family of human organs, designed for specific functions geared toward staying alive. Yet some must envision it as a "door" that can be opened and shut, allowing all manner of "visitors", etc. The terms "I love you with all my heart, accept Jesus into your heart, pray with all my heart, forgive you with all my heart," I believe would cause some to shy away from accepting Jesus "into their lives" because of this use of the word heart. The heart is inside your body...accepting Jesus into your heart would mean that any changes would be internal, and not showing through...accepting Him into your life would show a lifestyle change, and ways that He is working in your life. What happens when someone has a bypass operation and they are stitched up...is the "door" to the heart sealed? Does the doctor and attendants see all the "visitors" that you have "allowed into your heart?" Why not just simply say "I have invited Jesus" into my life," and then show it by your actions, not just words? Thanks for your patience. Centurian |

41270 | Why are angels offended? | 1 Cor 11:5 | Lifer1J511 | 3052
I did state that this is a difficult passage to interpret. I was offering my view and my reason for that view. I do not claim to have all truth or revelation. There is much about the Bible that I do not know. But I do believe in intrepreting the passages that seem 'more obscure' based upon passages that are clearer. I do agree, obviously, that 1 Cor 11:10 says, 'because of the angels.' Where I'm 'fuzzy' is, what does that mean? Paul doesn't explain it. Yes, 1 Pet 1:12 does say that angels long to look into these things (our redemption) but I don't have a firm grasp as to the meaning. And though we may respect Charles Ryrie as a great theologian, his commentary is not divinely inspired. Do you believe that women should keep completely silent in the church building i.e. no talking, no singing, no teaching Sunday School? Where does it say in scripture that the angels are offended and what the repurcusions of that are?
41271 | What does "world" mean? | John 17:11 | reformedreader | 3040
Thanks Mark and please don't take my response the wrong way for I surely do not intend for it to be taken but with the utmost of respect and courtesy. I still don't see how the word didn't change meaning. It either retains the same meaning (referring to that of order as opposed to chaos) or it doesn't. If it doesn't, then it surely has changed. Now, you say the meaning did not change but the meaning you gave was "referring to that of order as opposed to chaos" and not "general" to "particular". The problem I see with this is the term "general" is so vague it can mean just about anything we want it to mean and the term "particular" was not followed with anything that is "particular" so it also leaves us with a vague and ambiguous meaning, which can also be whatever we want it to be in the absence of any specificity. I think John was very specific with what he wrote in 10:11; 27,28. I realize the word "kosmos" is used to refer to the created universe and as part of the created universe it "can" refer to mankind. However, that does not conclude that it "must" and most definitely refers to "all" mankind without exception. That is not general, that is very specific or I guess particular as you are using the term. This would completely disagree with what John states in the verses I quoted and it would contradict what John states if the word "kosmos" must be forced in John 3:16 to refer to "all" humans instead of just mankind, meaning some but not all. John does not say that Christ died for "all" mankind specifically or particularly. John says Christ died for His sheep and since "not all" humans are Christ’s sheep, then Christ obviously did not die for all humans unless something has changed the meaning of sheep. Now, we could say that all humans were/are Christ’s sheep (without any scriptural warrant) but at sometime in their lives they chose to become goats (also without any scriptural warrant). So, I still fail to see how the word "kosmos" changed from what you stated originally to what you stated in your response. What is it in John 3:16 that would lead anyone reading it to conclude that the term "kosmos" can only refer to all humans and still not contradict what John states in 10:11;27,28? Sam Hughey |

41276 | Does dying bring forgiveness? | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 3021
Mel, While I appreciate your response, I don't believe it makes sense. Here's why: 1) You say that the blood cleanses us from all unrighteousness IF we confess - this is conditional. 2) You say that IF we die then the blood covers the sin whether it is confessed or not. - this is unconditional (except for the fact that death has occurred). The blood covering sin cannot be BOTH conditional and unconditional. According to your view, why is unconfessed sin covered in death but NOT covered in life? What bearing does the state of our body have on whether we are forgiven or not? Or did I misunderstand your answer? Please support your view with scripture. We all have opinions but God's Word is truth. Thank you. |

41279 | Is fellowship with God conditional? | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 3016
Thanks for your response. I have a question about a statement you made. You said, "When we sin, it hinders our fellowship with God." What does this mean? What is fellowship with God? I see in Rom 6:23 that 'the wages of sin is death.' As I understand it, when I sin (and, unfortunately, I still do) I deserve death. James says that if I've broken the least of the commandments, I've broken them all. Where does the Bible negate Rom 6:23 and state that, for the Christian, the wages of sin is broken fellowship. Even 1 John 1:9 DOESN'T say, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to restore fellowship." Please don't think I'm trying to be argumentative. I appreciate what you said in your reply. Especially about taking communion. But we're not generally taught this view. I agree that we stand before a holy God only because of what God has done. But I want fellowship with Him. I want to 'know' Him. And if I'm always bouncing in and out of fellowship with God (because of my sin), how can I be secure in my relationship? Is being in fellowship totally dependant upon me and my confession? Thanks.
41280 | Legal/intimate? Judicial/parental? Huh? | 1 John 1:9 | Lifer1J511 | 3013
Thanks for your response. I, too, have also heard that there are 2 levels of forgiveness. The terms I've heard are Judicial and Parental forgiveness and also Positional and Practical forgiveness. I have heard that these coincide with the sanctification that you mention. These views may have some merit, it's just that I can't find them taught in scripture. There are many places in the N.T. after the cross that talk about forgiveness in Christ. How is one to know whether that is judicial/legal forgiveness or parental/intimate forgiveness. Unfortunately the writers of the N.T., led by the Holy Spirit, don't use these 'theological' terms. So how are Christians who don't know Greek (like me) to know what the levels of forgiveness are? |
