41207 | Moral and religious tolerance | John 17:11 | QuiltJunkie | 3425
Dear Hank, Thank you so much for affirming what I already believed. I thought I would let you know what spurred this question. I was a member of an on-line quilt group untill yesterday when another lady posted a christian page to our group and was promptly told by several that this was offensive, simplistic and inflamatory among other things. I posted to the lady and told her to keep having the courage to be a good christian and I also told the rest of the list that I had enjoyed being a part of their group but not at the cost of my religious and moral beliefs. I then un-subscribed from the group. It was my first experience with anything of this sort and it really shook me up to say the least. It was really nice to wake uo this morning and read your response. Quilt Junkie aka Monica Carter 28 Will be 29 tomorrow monicac@rjsonline.net ICQ 14829611 |

41210 | Who's sinning? | Col 3:9 | Lionstrong | 3379
Thank you Prayon and Lifer for your patients and perseverance. I love this forum. I think it’s a great place for iron to sharpen iron and for Christians to work on becoming of one mind on the things of the Lord. But let me press you a little bit further on this, if I may. I John 3:9, “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.”(NJKV) I know some translations soften this, but I won’t quibble. (Now follow me on this.) 1st point: Animals cannot sin. (Your comment on animals also implies this, I think.) Only persons can sin. 2nd point: So when sin is committed, it is committed by a person, not an animal or thing. 3rd point: A nature is a thing. It determines behavior, but it is a thing, not a person. 4th point: Our new man (or self) with its new nature, born of God, cannot sin. 5th point: We sin. 6th and finally: If only a person can sin, and our new man cannot sin, who’s sinning? Thanks again and peace in the Lamb. |

41211 | Whatever happened to Joseph?? | NT general Archive 1 | ILOVEJESUS | 3387
Hi!! I have wondered, and wondered, and wondered for about 39 years now, ever since I first became a Christian (I'm 45 now): Whatever happened to JESUS's earthly father (step-father), Joseph?? Why is it such a secret?? There's got to be a very good reason why neither JESUS, nor HIS HEAVENLY FATHER, through the HOLY SPIRIT, told us in the Bible. But, why?? Did Joseph die before JESUS died on the cross? (I've thought that he must have.) Or did he leave the family for some reason? I've always wondered...... And I've pondered this: If Joseph died, then why doesn't the Bible just say so?? There wouldn't be a good reason to hide that. But, if he left the family for some reason, then that would explain the big secrecy. Now, I would not think that JESUS or HIS HEAVENLY FATHER, through the HOLY SPIRIT in writing the Bible, were concealing it (by not mentioning it) out of shame or embarrassment, but rather, would ONLY be doing so for two reasons: 1. Out of DEEP, MERCIFUL LOVE, because "love covers a multitude of sins" and 2. To not cause a STUMBLING BLOCK to new Christians or to non-Christians P.S. If you find that the answer would violate those two reasons mentioned above, then please, instead of posting it publically, could you just e-mail me privately? P.S.S. Also, I have looked for the answer in Josephus's history book (in the library) several times over the many years, and couldn't find anything. But, maybe the answer is in there, and I just missed it. Maybe, it's not so secretive after all. But, Josephus's book is huge!! (I, of course, looked in the index first, but couldn't find anything.) |

41212 | Does Scripture mean what it says? | Gal 3:28 | inHzsvc | 3373
On I Tim. 2:11, John Gill writes: Ver. 11. "Let the woman learn in silence", The apostle goes on to give some other instructions to women, how they should behave themselves in public worship, in the church of God; he would have them be learners and not teachers, sit and hear, and learn more of Christ, and of the truth of the Gospel, and to maintain good works; and he would have them learn in silence, and not offer to rise and speak, under a pretence of having a word from the Lord, or of being under an impulse of the Spirit of the Lord, as some frantic women have done; and if they should meet with anything, under the ministry of the word, they did not understand, or they had an objection to, they were not to speak in public, but ask their own husbands at home; see "1Co 14:34,35". And thus, they were to behave "with all subjection"; both to the ministers of the word, and to their own husbands; obeying from the heart the form of doctrine delivered to them; and submitting cheerfully to the ordinances of Christ; the whole of which is a professed subjection to the Gospel, and which becomes all professing godliness. This man knows more of Hebrew customs than you or I. Perhaps you are right, as far as the custom was then. That doesn't change the fact that Paul was inspired to say of women "for it is not permitted unto them to speak."--no reason is attached to this except that "they are commanded to be under obedience." This has nothing to do with them sitting on the other side of the church. It would cause no more commotion for men to rise and speak to their wives on the other side of the church than the women. This is not a good argument when it is disected. Again, Scripture is plain on this subject. You have to add to the Word of God to make it say what you want it to say. Timothy was inspired to say that women weren't to "teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." How can you say that this is because they were on the other side of the church. That is a cop out that makes no sense when taken in light of Scripture. Never go into a study of the Bible with preconceived notions. When you do, you have corrupted your study already. Take the Scripture for what it says and leave it at that. God bless. |

41217 | Dead but not gone? | Col 3:9 | Lionstrong | 3323
Thanks, Prayon, for responding to my question. You seem to imply that because something is dead it does not exist, but we were already dead before we were saved. "...you...were dead in tresspasses and sin..." Ehp. 2:1. So what do you make of that? Thanks again.
41218 | Intimidated by the word "doctrine"? | 2 Tim 3:16 | kalos | 3312
Dear forrest: Why are so many threatened by the use of the word "doctrine", which is merely another word for "teaching"? All scripture is indeed "profitable for doctrine" (KJV). . . . Thank you for the philosophical essay on Truth. But I was never speaking of the precepts or doctrine of men. I was speaking only of sound Bible doctrine which IS inspired of God and the meaning of which can be determined. To suggest that there is some contradiction or conflict between sound Bible doctrine and Christ is misleading. The Bible (including its sound doctrine) is the Written Word. Christ is the Living Word. Therefore, I see no conflict between Christ, the Living Word, and the Bible, the Written Word. So I still say belief comes first and then behavior. I still say WHAT, as well as Whom, we believe greatly impacts the way we live. It was not my intention to quibble over words, but to state a plain fact in plain English. |
