Bible Question: the word race in greek is the word agon What does it mean |
Bible Answer: Greetings Dolly Beard! Hebrews 12:1 "Heb 12:1 Wherefore[5105] seeing we[2249] also[2532] are compassed about(4029) with(2254) so great[5118] a cloud[3509] of witnesses,[3144] let us lay aside[659] every[3956] weight,[3591] and[2532] the sin[266] which doth so easily beset[2139] us, and[2532] let us run[5143] with[1223] patience[5281] the[3588] race[73] that is set before[4295] us,[2254]" (KJV, Strong's Numbers from Strong's Exhaustive Concordance). In the above verse, the word race (Strong's Number G73) is used for the Greek word 'agon', which, according to Strong's Dictionary, means: "agon ag-one' From G71; properly a place of assembly (as if led), that is, (by implication) a contest (held there); figuratively an effort or anxiety: - conflict, contention, fight, race." In the context of Hebrews 12:1, I would conclude that the word "race" means "contest", in the sense that we should run the race while "looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith!" (Hebrews 12:2) I hope that this helps! Blessings to you, Makarios |
