Bible Question: I am interested in obtaining a cross section of Christian responses to the question "What does the new testament word Gospel mean to you"? The answer may be short, long, and with or without biblical citations. |
Bible Answer: I Greek U in the Name of Jesus Evangelize - Bring good news; proclaim the gospel Gospel - Good news concerning Christ, the kingdom of God and personal salvation; absolute "TRUTH" The gospel is not: Every word that comes out of the preacher's mouth A style or way of saying something A unique type of music Found in the Old Testament, except for a foretaste in the writings of the prophets. The gospel is: A definitive word about the heart of the Christian faith What the earliest preachers preached as recorded in the New Testament Eight elements of the gospel; *Good news foretold: The revelation by Old Testament prophets that God would send a Messiah, a pesonal representative of His grace. (Acts 2:16-21;3:12-13) *Fulfillment of prophecy: as described in the New Testament, Jesus, the Son of God, the Messiah, came to earth to live and work amoung us. (Acts 2:22,25-31;3:18, 22-26) *Jesus death for our sins: Jesus took upon Himself the guilt for the sins of all humankind so that through our faith in Him we are able to stand before God free of the stain of sin.(Acts 2:23;3:15) *Jesus resurrection from the dead: God conquered sin and death by raising Jesus from the dead. Though faith in Jesus we have the promise of eternal life. (Acts 2;24-32;3:15) *Presence of the Holy Spirit: when Jesus ascended into heaven, God sent his Holy Spirit to live among us. The Holy Spirit comforts, sustains and equips us to do the work of Christ in the World. (Acts 2:33-36, 38; 3:19) *Call to repentance: we all are guilty before God. Men and women must repent of their sins to come into new relationship with God. (Acts 2:37-39;3:19) *Forgiveness of sins God forgives the repentant sinner. Throught Jesus, our guilt is removed and we are saved. God makes us His children. He accepts us into His family. (Acts 2:38,3:19) *Gods ultimate victory: God is coming again in Jesus Christ to gather all His childdren home. (Actss 2;33;3:21) Servant of God moedee |
