Left to ourselves we would never choose to make peace with God, even if we had the ability to do so. Peace with God occurs as a consequence of justification. Justification is not something that happens inside of us, rather it is an act of God in which He imputes our sin to Jesus Christ and imputes the righteousness of Christ to us.
