aWhat shall we say to all this? Should we bcontinue in sin and practice sin as a habit so that God’s gift of 1grace may increase and overflow?Grace justifies believers, making them free of the guilt of sin, blameless, so that they may have eternal life.Rom 3:5Rom 3:8; 6:15 2 aCertainly not! How can we, the very ones who bdied to sin, continue to live in it any longer?Luke 20:16; Rom 6:15Rom 6:11; 7:4, 6; Gal 2:19; Col 2:20; 3:3; 1 Pet 2:24 3 Or are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been 1abaptized into bChrist Jesus were baptized into His death?“Baptize” is a transliteration of the Greek word baptizo, which means to submerge an object into liquid. In this passage Christ becomes the liquid, metaphorically, and those who are baptized into Him remain in Him forever and benefit from His experiences, including His death. The best news is that Jesus was resurrected, so believers will also experience resurrection (those who are alive when Christ returns will experience a physical transformation). But even now believers experience a kind of resurrection in that they live new lives (as Paul says, “walk in newness of life”) in a wonderful new relationship with God and their fellow believers.Matt 28:19Acts 2:38; 8:16; 19:5; Gal 3:27 4 We have therefore been aburied with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was braised from the dead through the cglory and power of the Father, we too might walk habitually in dnewness of life abandoning our old ways.Col 2:12Acts 2:24; Rom 6:9John 11:40; 2 Cor 13:4Rom 7:6; 2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15; Eph 4:23f; Col 3:10 5 For aif we have become one with Him permanently united in the likeness of His death, we will also certainly be one with Him and share fully in the likeness of His resurrection.2 Cor 4:10; Phil 3:10f; Col 2:12; 3:1 6 We know that our aold 1self our human nature without the Holy Spirit was bnailed to the cross with Him, in order that our cbody of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin.Gr anthropos, i.e. man, person.Eph 4:22; Col 3:9Gal 2:20; 5:24; 6:14Rom 7:24 7 For athe person who has died with Christ has been freed from the power of sin.1 Pet 4:1
8 Now aif we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live together with Him,Rom 6:4; 2 Cor 4:10; 2 Tim 2:11 9 because we know the self-evident truth that Christ, having been araised from the dead, will never die again; bdeath no longer has power over Him.Acts 2:24; Rom 6:4Rev 1:18 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin ending its power and paying the sinner’s debt once and for all; and the life that He lives, He lives to glorify God in unbroken fellowship with Him. 11 Even so, consider yourselves to be adead to sin and your relationship to it broken, but alive to God in unbroken fellowship with Him in Christ Jesus.Rom 6:2; 7:4, 6; Gal 2:19; Col 2:20; 3:3; 1 Pet 2:24
12 Therefore do not let sin areign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts and passions.Rom 6:14 13 Do not go on aoffering members of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness. But boffer yourselves to God in a decisive act as those alive raised from the dead to a new life, and your members all of your abilities—sanctified, set apart as instruments of righteousness yielded to God.Rom 6:16, 19; 7:5; Col 3:5Rom 12:1; 2 Cor 5:14f; 1 Pet 2:24 14 For asin will no longer bbe a master over you, since cyou are not under Law as slaves, but dunder unmerited grace as recipients of God’s favor and mercy.Rom 8:2, 12Rom 6:12Rom 5:18; 7:4, 6; Gal 4:21Rom 5:17, 21
15 What then are we to conclude? aShall we sin because we are not under Law, but under God’s grace? bCertainly not!Rom 6:1Luke 20:16; Rom 6:2 16 Do you not aknow that when you continually offer yourselves to someone bto do his will, you are the slaves of the one whom you obey, either slaves of csin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness ?Rom 11:2; 1 Cor 3:16; 5:6; 6:2, 3, 9, 15, 16, 19; 9:13, 24John 8:34; 2 Pet 2:19Rom 6:21, 23 17 But athank God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient with all your heart to bthe standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed.Rom 1:8; 2 Cor 2:142 Tim 1:13 18 And having been aset free from sin, you have become the slaves of righteousness of conformity to God’s will and purpose.John 8:32; Rom 6:22; 8:2 19 aI am speaking in familiar human terms because of your natural limitations your spiritual immaturity. For bjust as you presented your bodily members as slaves to impurity and to moral lawlessness, leading to further lawlessness, so now offer your members your abilities, your talents as slaves to righteousness, leading to 1sanctification that is, being set apart for God’s purpose. There are three basic kinds of sanctification in the NT: (1) Positional sanctification is based on the death of Christ. Every believer is a saint and is holy before God. The believer is “set apart for God” and in some instances “set apart for God’s purpose” (Heb 10:10, 14, 29); (2) Practical sanctification is a progressive process and means “growing in righteous living” as the believer matures spiritually (Rom 6:13; 1 Thess 5:23; 1 Pet 1:16); (3) Ultimate sanctification is that which is to come when the believer stands before God (Eph 5:26, 27).Rom 3:5Rom 6:13
20 aWhen you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness you had no desire to conform to God’s will.Matt 6:24; Rom 6:16 21 So what abenefit did you get at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? None! For the outcome of those things is bdeath!Jer 12:13; Ezek 16:63; Rom 7:5Rom 1:32; 5:12; 6:16, 23; 8:6, 13; Gal 6:8 22 But now since you have been aset free from sin and have become willing bslaves to God, you have your cbenefit, resulting in sanctification being made holy and set apart for God’s purpose, and dthe outcome of this is eternal life.John 8:32; Rom 6:18; 8:21 Cor 7:22; 1 Pet 2:16Rom 7:41 Pet 1:9 23 For the wages of asin is death, but the free gift of God that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers is beternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.Rom 1:32; 5:12; 6:16, 21; 8:6, 13; Gal 6:8Matt 25:46; Rom 5:21; 8:38, 39
