At that time Abijah the son and crown prince, heir of Jeroboam became sick. 2 Jeroboam said to his wife, “Please get up and adisguise yourself, so that people will not know that you are Jeroboam’s wife, and go to bShiloh. Ahijah the prophet is there, the one who ctold me that I would be king over this people.1 Sam 28:8; 2 Sam 14:2; 2 Chr 18:29Josh 18:11 Kin 11:29-31 3 aTake with you ten loaves of bread, some cakes, and a bottle of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the boy.”1 Sam 9:7, 8; 1 Kin 13:7; 2 Kin 4:42
4 Jeroboam’s wife did so. She got up and went twenty miles to aShiloh, and came to the house of bAhijah. Now Ahijah could not see, cbecause his eyes were dim from old age.1 Kin 14:21 Kin 11:291 Sam 3:2; 4:15 5 And the LORD said to Ahijah, “Behold, the 1wife of Jeroboam is coming to inquire of you about her son, because he is sick. You shall say such and such to her, for when she arrives, ashe will pretend to be another woman.”There is an insertion in the Septuagint, found in the Vatican manuscript after 1 Kin 12:24, in which Jeroboam’s wife is identified as Ano, the older sister of Tahpenes the wife of King Shishak of Egypt. When Jeroboam fled to Egypt to escape death at the hands of King Solomon, he went to King Shishak of Egypt and remained with him until the death of Solomon. Jeroboam asked permission of King Shishak to return to his own land, and the king told him, “Ask of me a request, and I will give it to you.” In reply, Jeroboam apparently asked for Ano.2 Sam 14:2
6 So when Ahijah heard the sound of her feet as she came in the doorway, he said, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why do you pretend to be another woman? For I have been sent to you by God with a harsh message. 7 Go, tell Jeroboam, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: “aBecause I exalted you from among the people and made you leader over My people Israel,2 Sam 12:7; 1 Kin 11:28-31; 16:2 8 and atore the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it to you—bbut you have not been like My servant David, who kept My commandments and followed Me with all his heart, cto do only what was right in My eyes,1 Kin 11:311 Kin 11:33, 381 Kin 15:5 9 but have done more evil than all the 1kings who were before you; for you ahave gone and made for yourself other gods and bmolten images to provoke Me to anger, and have ccast Me behind your back—I.e. Saul, David, and Solomon.1 Kin 12:28; 2 Chr 11:15Ex 34:17Neh 9:26; Ps 50:17; Ezek 23:35 10 therefore behold, I am bringing evil on the house of Jeroboam, and I awill cut off from Jeroboam every male, bboth bond and free, in Israel, and cwill utterly sweep away the house of Jeroboam as one sweeps away dung until it is all gone.1 Kin 21:21; 2 Kin 9:8Deut 32:36; 2 Kin 14:261 Kin 15:29 11 aThe dogs will eat the carcass of anyone belonging to Jeroboam who dies in the city, and the birds of the sky will eat the carcass of anyone who dies in the field, for the LORD has spoken it.”’ Deut 28:261 Kin 16:4; 21:24 12 Now as for you , arise, go to your own house. aWhen your feet enter the city, the child Abijah will die.1 Kin 14:17 13 All Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he alone of Jeroboam’s family 1will come to be placed in the grave, because in him there was found asomething good and pleasing toward the LORD, the God of Israel, in the house of Jeroboam. It was considered disgraceful, shameful and disgusting for a corpse to be left unburied and exposed to animals.2 Chr 19:3 14 Moreover, athe LORD will raise up for Himself a king over Israel who will cut off the house of Jeroboam this day and from now on.1 Kin 15:27-29
15 “The LORD will strike Israel, as a reed is shaken in the water; and aHe will uproot Israel from bthis good land which He gave to their fathers, and He cwill scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, dbecause they have made their 1Asherim, provoking the LORD to anger.Idols of the goddess Asherah.Deut 29:28; 2 Kin 17:6; Ps 52:5Josh 23:15, 162 Kin 15:29Ex 34:13, 14; Deut 12:3, 4 16 He will give up Israel abecause of the sins of Jeroboam which he has committed, and with which he has made Israel sin by leading them into idolatry.”1 Kin 12:30; 13:34; 15:30, 34; 16:2
17 So Jeroboam’s wife arose and left and came to aTirzah the king’s residence. bAs she was entering the threshold of the house, the child Abijah died.1 Kin 15:21, 33; 16:6-9, 15, 23; Song 6:41 Kin 14:12 18 And aall Israel buried him and mourned for him, in accordance with the word of the LORD which He spoke through His servant Ahijah the prophet.1 Kin 14:13
19 Now as for the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, ahow he made war and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.1 Kin 14:30; 2 Chr 13:2-20 20 The time that Jeroboam reigned was twenty-two years, and he slept with his fathers in death; and Nadab his son reigned in his place.
21 aNow Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, bthe city the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel in which to put His Name . His mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess.2 Chr 12:131 Kin 11:32, 36 22 And the people of aJudah did evil in the sight of the LORD. They bprovoked Him to 1jealousy more than all that their fathers had done, with their sins which they had committed.God does not tolerate the transfer of the honor and worship that is due Him to any other being or object.2 Chr 12:1, 14Deut 32:21; Ps 78:58; 1 Cor 10:22 23 For they also built for themselves ahigh places to worship idols and sacred bpillars and cAsherim for the goddess Asherah. These were on every high hill and dunder every luxuriant tree.Deut 12:2; Ezek 16:24Deut 16:221 Kin 14:152 Kin 17:10; Is 57:5; Jer 2:20 24 There were also amale cult prostitutes in the land. They committed all the repulsive acts of the nations which the LORD dispossessed before the Israelites.Gen 19:5; Deut 23:17; 1 Kin 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kin 23:7
25 aNow in the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak king of Egypt Jeroboam’s brother-in-law came up against Jerusalem.1 Kin 11:40; 2 Chr 12:2, 9 26 He took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king’s house; ahe took away everything, bhe even took all the shields of gold which Solomon had made.1 Kin 15:18; 2 Chr 12:91 Kin 10:17; 2 Chr 9:15, 16 27 So King Rehoboam made bronze shields to replace them and ahanded them over to the captains of the palace guard who guarded the doorway of the king’s house.1 Sam 8:11; 22:17 28 And as often as the king went into the house of the LORD, the guards would carry them and bring them back into the guardroom.
29 aNow as for the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?2 Chr 12:15, 16 30 aThere was also war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.1 Kin 12:21; 15:6 31 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers in death and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. aHis mother’s name was Naamah the Ammonitess. Abijam his son became king in his place.1 Kin 14:21
