Then the ^afifth angel sounded, and I saw a ^bstar from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the ^ckey to the ^dshaft of the abyss was given to him. 2 He opened the shaft of the abyss, and ^asmoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and ^bthe sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. 3 Then out of the smoke came ^alocusts ¹upon the earth, and power was given them, as the ^bscorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were told not to ^ahurt the ^bgrass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the ^cseal of God on their foreheads. 5 And ¹they were not permitted to kill ²anyone, but to torment for ^afive months; and their torment was like the torment of a ^bscorpion when it ³stings a person. 6 And in those days ^apeople will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death ¹will flee from them!

7 The ^1aappearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. 8 They had hair like the hair of women, and their ^ateeth were like the teeth of lions. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the ^asound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like ^ascorpions, and stings; and in their ^btails is their power to hurt people for ^cfive months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the ^aabyss; his name in ^bHebrew is ^1cAbaddon, and in the Greek he has the name ²Apollyon.

12 ^aThe first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard ¹a voice from the ²four ^ahorns of the ^bgolden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the ^afour angels who are bound at the ^bgreat river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were ^areleased, so that they would kill a ^bthird of mankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was ^atwo hundred million; ^bI heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw ^ain my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of ^1bbrimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and ^cout of their mouths *came fire and smoke and ^2dbrimstone. 18 A ^athird of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the ^bfire, the smoke, and the ¹brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, ^adid not repent of ^bthe works of their hands so as not to ^cworship demons and ^dthe idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they ^adid not repent of their murders, nor of their ^bwitchcraft, nor of their ^csexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

Then the ^afifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a ^bstar (angelic being) that had fallen from heaven to the earth; and the ^ckey of ^dthe bottomless pit (abyss) was given to him (the star-angel) . Rev 20:1 2 He opened the bottomless pit, and ^asmoke like the smoke of a great furnace flowed out of the pit; and ^bthe sun and the atmosphere were darkened by the smoke from the pit. Gen 19:28; Ex 19:18; Joel 2:10 3 Then out of the smoke came ^alocusts upon the earth, and power to hurt was given to them, like the power which the earth’s ^bscorpions have. Ex 10:12-15 4 They were told not to ^ahurt the ^bgrass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but to hurt only the people who do not have the ^cseal (mark of ownership, protection) of God on their foreheads. Ezek 9:4 5 They were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment and cause them extreme pain for ^afive months; and their torment was like the torment from a ^bscorpion when it stings a man. 6 And in those days ^apeople will seek death and will not find it; and they will long to die to escape the pain, but will discover that death evades them. Job 3:21

7 The locusts ^aresembled horses prepared and equipped for battle; and on their heads appeared to be something like golden crowns, and their faces resembled human faces. Joel 2:4 8 They had hair like the hair of women, and their ^ateeth were like the teeth of lions. Joel 1:6 9 They had breastplates (scales) like breastplates made of iron; and the whirring ^anoise of their wings was like the thunderous noise of countless horse-drawn chariots charging at full speed into battle. Joel 2:5 10 They have tails like ^ascorpions, and stingers; and in their ^btails is their power to hurt people for ^cfive months. Joel 2:6 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the ^aabyss (the bottomless pit) ; in ^bHebrew his name is ^cAbaddon (destruction) , and in Greek he is called Apollyon (destroyer-king) .

13 Then the sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a solitary voice from the four ^ahorns of the ^bgolden altar which stands before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the ^afour angels who are bound at the ^bgreat river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the appointed hour and day and month and year, were ^areleased to kill a ^bthird of mankind. 16 The number of the troops of cavalry was ^atwice ten thousand times ten thousand (two hundred million) ; ^bI heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw the horses and their riders ^ain my vision: the riders had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth (sapphire blue) and of ^bbrimstone (yellow) ; and the heads of the horses looked like the heads of lions; and from ^cout of their mouths came fire and smoke and ^dbrimstone (burning sulfur) . 18 A ^athird of mankind was killed by these three plagues—by the ^bfire and the smoke and the brimstone that came from the mouths of the horses. 19 For the power of the horses to do harm is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and it is with them that they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, ^1adid not repent even then of ^bthe works of their hands, so as to cease ^cworshiping and paying homage to the demons and the ^didols of gold and of silver and of bronze and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; Ps 115:4-7; 135:15-17; Is 17:8 21 and they ^adid not repent of their murders nor of their ^bsorceries (drugs, intoxications) nor of their sexual ^cimmorality nor of their thefts.
