^aThen some Pharisees and scribes *came to Jesus ^bfrom Jerusalem and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they ^ado not wash their hands when they eat bread.” 3 And He answered and said to them, “Why do you yourselves also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘^aHONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘^bTHE ONE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO ¹BE PUT TO DEATH.’ 5 But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever I have that would help you has been ¹given to God,” 6 he is not to ¹honor his father or mother.’ And by this you have invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy about you, by saying:

10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, “Hear and understand! 11 ^aIt is not what enters the mouth that defiles the person, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles the person.”

12 Then the disciples came and *said to Him, “Do You know that the Pharisees were ¹offended when they heard this statement?” 13 But He answered and said, “^aEvery plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. 14 Leave them alone; ^athey are blind guides ¹of blind people. And ^bif a person who is blind guides another who is blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter ¹said to Him, “^aExplain the parable to us.” 16 ¹Jesus said, “Are you also still lacking in understanding? 17 Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is ¹eliminated? 18 But ^athe things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and those things defile the person. 19 ^aFor out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, acts of adultery, other immoral sexual acts, thefts, false testimonies, and ¹slanderous statements. 20 These are the things that defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person.”

21 ^aJesus went away from there, and withdrew into the region of ^bTyre and ^cSidon. 22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, ^aSon of David; my daughter is severely ^bdemon-possessed.” 23 But He did not answer her with even a word. And His disciples came up and urged Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting ¹at us!” 24 But He answered and said, “I was sent only to ^athe lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and ^abegan ¹to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 Yet He answered and said, “It is not ¹good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 And she said, “Yes, Lord; but please help, for even the dogs feed on the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, ^ayour faith is great; it shall be done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed ¹at once.

29 ^aDeparting from there, Jesus went along ^bthe Sea of Galilee, and after going up on the mountain, He was sitting there. 30 And ¹large crowds came to Him bringing with them those who were limping, had impaired limbs, were blind, or were unable to speak, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and ^aHe healed them. 31 So the crowd was astonished as they saw those who were unable to speak talking, those with impaired limbs ¹restored, those who were limping walking around, and those who were blind seeing; and they ^aglorified the God of Israel.

32 ^aNow Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “^bI feel compassion for the ¹people, because they ²have remained with Me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way.” 33 The disciples *said to Him, “Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?” 34 And Jesus *said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” And they said, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And He directed the ¹people to ²sit down on the ground; 36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and after ^agiving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large ^abaskets full. 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

39 And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into ^athe boat and came to the region of ^bMagadan.

And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting ¹at us.” 24 But He answered and said, “I was sent only to ^athe lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and ^abegan ¹to bow down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 And He answered and said, “It is not ¹good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 But she said, “Yes, Lord; ¹but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus said to her, “O woman, ^ayour faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed ¹at once.

29 ^aDeparting from there, Jesus went along by ^bthe Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there. 30 And ¹large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and ^aHe healed them. 31 So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled ¹restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they ^aglorified the God of Israel.

^aThen ^bsome Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem came to Jesus and said, 2 “Why do Your disciples violate the ¹tradition (religious laws) handed down by the Jewish elders? For Your disciples ^ado not ceremonially wash their hands before they eat.” 3 He replied to them, “Why also do you violate the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition handed down by the elders? 4 For God said through Moses, ‘^aHONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,’ and, ‘^bHE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF or INSULTS or TREATS IMPROPERLY FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.’ Ex 20:12; 21:17; Lev 20:9; Deut 5:16 5 But you say, ‘If anyone says to his father or mother, “Whatever money or resource that I have that would help you is already dedicated and given to God,” 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother by helping them with their need.’ So by this you have invalidated the word of God depriving it of force and authority and making it of no effect for the sake of your tradition handed down by the elders. 7 You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders) , rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,

10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said, “Listen and understand this: 11 ^aIt is not what goes into the mouth of a man that defiles and dishonors him, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles and dishonors him.”

12 Then the disciples came and said to Jesus, “Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard you say this?” 13 He answered, “^aEvery plant which My heavenly Father did not plant will be torn up by the roots. Is 60:21 14 Leave them alone; ^athey are blind guides [¹leading blind followers]. ^bIf a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter asked Him, “^aExplain this parable about what defiles a person to us.” 16 And He said, “Are you still so dull and unable to put things together? 17 Do you not understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? 18 But ^awhatever word comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this is what defiles and dishonors the man. 19 ^aFor out of the heart come evil thoughts and plans, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slanders (verbal abuse, irreverent speech, blaspheming) . 20 These are the things which defile and dishonor the man; but eating with ceremonially unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

21 After leaving there, ^aJesus withdrew to the district of ^1bTyre and ^cSidon. Mark 7:24-30 22 And a ¹Canaanite woman from that district came out and began to cry out urgently, saying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, ^aSon of David (Messiah) ; my daughter is cruelly ^bpossessed by a demon.” 23 But He did not say a word in answer to her. And His disciples came and asked Him repeatedly, “Send her away, because she keeps shouting out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was commissioned by God and sent only to ^athe lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and ^abegan to kneel down before Him, saying, “Lord, help me!” 26 And He replied, “It is not good (appropriate, fair) to take the ¹children’s bread and throw it to the ²pet dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord; but even the pet dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their young masters’ table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, ^ayour faith your personal trust and confidence in My power is great; it will be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed from that moment.

29 Jesus ^awent on from there and passed along by the eastern shore of ^bthe Sea of Galilee. Then He went up on the hillside and was sitting there. 30 And great crowds came to Him, bringing with them the lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they put them down at His feet; and ^aHe healed them. 31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they ^apraised and glorified the God of Israel.

32 ^aThen Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, “^bI feel compassion for the crowd, because they have been with Me now three days and have nothing left to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, because they might faint from exhaustion on the way home.” Mark 8:1-21 33 The disciples said to Him, “Where are we to get enough bread in this isolated place to feed so large a crowd?” 34 And Jesus asked them, “How many loaves of bread do you have?” They replied, “Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 He directed the crowd to sit down on the ground, 36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and when He had ^agiven thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they gathered up seven full ^abaskets of the broken pieces that were left over. 38 Among those who ate were 4,000 men, not counting women and children.

39 Then Jesus sent the crowds away, got into ^athe boat and went to the district of ^1bMagadan.
