Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “^aSanctify to Me every firstborn, the firstborn of every womb among the sons of Israel, among people and animals alike; it belongs to Me.”

3 And Moses said to the people, “^aRemember this day in which you departed from Egypt, from the house of ¹slavery; for ^bby ²a powerful hand the LORD brought you out from this place. ^cAnd nothing with yeast shall be eaten. 4 On this day in the ^amonth of Abib, you are about to go out from here. 5 And it shall be when the LORD ^abrings you to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which ^bHe swore to your fathers to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, ^cthat you shall ¹perform this rite in this month. 6 For ^aseven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; and ^anothing with yeast shall ¹be seen among you, nor shall any dough with yeast ²be seen among you in all your borders. 8 And ^ayou shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And ^ait shall ¹serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder ²on your forehead, that the law of the LORD may be in your mouth; for with ^ba powerful hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall ^akeep this ordinance at its appointed time from ¹year to year.

11 “Now when ^athe LORD brings you to the land of the Canaanite, as ^bHe swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 ^ayou shall ¹devote to the LORD every firstborn of a womb, and every firstborn offspring of an animal that you own; the males belong to the LORD. 13 But ^aevery firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and ^bevery ¹firstborn among your sons you shall redeem. 14 ^aAnd it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What is this?’ then you shall say to him, ‘^bWith ¹a powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of ²slavery. 15 And it came about, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the ^aLORD put to death every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from human firstborns to animal firstborns. Therefore, I sacrifice to the LORD the males, every firstborn of a womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So ^ait shall ¹serve as a sign on your hand and as ²phylacteries ³on your forehead, for with ⁴a powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”

17 Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “^aThe people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Therefore God led the people around by way of the wilderness to the ¹Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up ^ain battle formation from the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took ^athe bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will certainly ¹take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from ^aSuccoth and camped in Etham, on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And ^athe LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they might ¹travel by day and by night. 22 ¹He ^adid not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from the presence of the people.

Therefore, I sacrifice to the LORD the males, the first ¹offspring of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So ^ait shall ¹serve as a sign on your hand and as ²phylacteries ³on your forehead, for with a ⁴powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”

17 Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, “^aThe people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the ¹Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up ^ain martial array from the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took ^athe bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, “God will surely ¹take care of you, and you shall carry my bones from here with you.” 20 Then they set out from ^aSuccoth and camped in Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 ^aThe LORD was going before them in a pillar of cloud by day to lead them on the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, that they might ¹travel by day and by night. 22 ¹He ^adid not take away the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “^aSanctify to Me that is, set apart for My purpose every firstborn, the first offspring of every womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of animal; it is Mine.”

3 Moses said to the people, “^aRemember solemnly observe and commemorate this day on which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage and slavery; for ^bby a strong and powerful hand the LORD brought you out of this place. ^cAnd nothing leavened shall be eaten. 4 On this day in the ^amonth Abib, you are about to go onward. 5 And it shall be when the LORD ^abrings you into the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which ^bHe swore to your fathers to give you, a land of abundance ¹flowing with milk and honey, ^cthat you shall keep and observe this rite (service) in this month. 6 ^aFor seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a feast to the LORD. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten throughout the seven days; ^ano leavened bread shall be seen with you, nor shall there be leaven within the borders of your territory. 8 ^aYou shall explain this to your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 ^aIt shall serve as a sign to you on your hand (arm) , and as a reminder on your forehead, so that the instruction (law) of the LORD may be in your mouth; for with ^ba strong and powerful hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt. 10 Therefore, you shall ^akeep this ordinance at this time from year to year.

11 “Now it shall be when ^athe LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as ^bHe swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 ^ayou shall set apart and dedicate to the LORD all that first opens the womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock shall be the LORD’S. 13 ^aEvery firstborn of a ¹donkey you shall redeem by substituting a lamb as a sacrifice for it, but if you do not wish to redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and ^bevery firstborn among your sons you shall redeem that is, ‘buy back’ from God with a suitable sacrifice. 14 ^aAnd it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What does this mean?’ you shall say to him, ‘With a ^bstrong and powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of bondage and slavery. 15 For it happened, when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, that the ^aLORD struck every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of animal. Therefore, I sacrifice to the LORD all the males, the first to be born of every womb, but every firstborn of my sons I redeem.’ 16 So ^ait shall serve as a sign and a reminder on your left hand (arm) and as ¹frontlets between your eyes, for by a strong and powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt.”

17 So it happened, when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was nearer; for God said, “^aThe people might change their minds when they see war that is, that there will be war, and return to Egypt.” 18 But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the ¹Red Sea; the sons of Israel went up ^ain battle array (orderly ranks, marching formation) out of the land of Egypt. 19 Moses took ^athe bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had solemnly ordered (placed under an oath) the Israelites, saying, “God will assuredly take care of you, and you must carry my bones away from here with you.” Gen 50:25 20 They journeyed from ^aSuccoth in Goshen and camped at Etham on the edge of the wilderness. 21 ^aThe presence of the LORD was going before them by day in a pillar (column) of cloud to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they could travel by day and by night. 22 He ^adid not withdraw the pillar of cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from going before the people.
