Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “^aTake vengeance on the Midianites for the sons of Israel; afterward you will be ^bgathered to your people.” 3 So Moses spoke to the people, saying, “Arm men from among you for the war, so that they may ¹go against Midian to execute ^athe LORD’S vengeance on Midian. 4 You shall send a thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel to the war.” 5 So there were selected from the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. 6 And Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war with them, ^aand the holy implements and ^bthe trumpets for the alarm in his hand. 7 So they made war against Midian, just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and ^athey killed every male. 8 They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of those killed: ^aEvi, Rekem, ^bZur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. They also killed ^cBalaam the son of Beor with the sword. 9 And the sons of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and they plundered all their cattle, all their flocks, and all their property. 10 Then they ¹burned all their cities where they lived and all their encampments. 11 And ^athey took all the plunder and all the spoils, both of people and of livestock. 12 They brought the captives and the spoils and the plunder to Moses, to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the sons of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab which are by the Jordan, opposite Jericho.

13 And Moses, Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. 15 And Moses said to them, “Have you ¹spared ^aall the women? 16 ^aBehold, they caused the sons of Israel, through the ¹counsel of ^bBalaam, to be unfaithful to the LORD in the matter of Peor, so that the plague took place among the congregation of the LORD! 17 ^aNow therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known a man ¹intimately. 18 However, all the ¹girls who have not known a ²man intimately, keep alive for yourselves. 19 ^aAnd as for you, camp outside the camp for seven days; whoever has killed a person and whoever has touched anyone killed, purify yourselves, you and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day. 20 And you shall purify for yourselves every garment, every article of leather, every work of goats’ hair, and every article of wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle, “This is the statute of the Law which the LORD has commanded Moses: 22 only the gold and the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that can ¹withstand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it will be clean, only it shall be purified with ^awater for impurity. But whatever cannot ²withstand the fire you shall pass through the water. 24 And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and you will be clean; and afterward you may enter the camp.”

25 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation take a count of the spoils ¹that were captured, both of people and of livestock; 27 and ^adivide the spoils between the warriors who went to battle and all the congregation. 28 Also, ^acollect a tribute tax for the LORD from the men of war who went to battle, one ¹in five hundred of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the sheep; 29 take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as an ¹offering to the LORD. 30 And from the sons of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn from every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the sheep, from all the animals; and give them to the Levites who ^aperform the duty of the tabernacle of the LORD.” 31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

32 Now the spoils that remained from the plunder which the ¹men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep, 33 seventy-two thousand cattle, 34 sixty-one thousand donkeys, 35 and of captive people, of the women who had not known a ¹man intimately, in all were thirty-two thousand people.

36 The half, the share of those who went to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was 337,500, 37 the LORD’S tribute tax of the sheep was 675; 38 the cattle were thirty-six thousand, from which the LORD’S tribute tax was seventy-two; 39 the donkeys were 30,500, from which the LORD’S tribute tax was sixty-one; 40 and the captive people were sixteen thousand, from whom the LORD’S tribute tax was thirty-two persons. 41 And Moses gave the tribute tax, which was the LORD’S offering, to Eleazar the priest, just ^aas the LORD had commanded Moses.

42 As for the sons of Israel’s half, which Moses ¹separated from the men who had gone to war— 43 now the congregation’s half was 337,500 sheep, 44 thirty-six thousand cattle, 45 30,500 donkeys, 46 and the captive people were sixteen thousand— 47 from the sons of Israel’s half Moses took one drawn from every fifty, both of people and of animals, and gave them to the Levites, who performed the duty of the tabernacle of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, approached Moses, 49 and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a census of the men of war who are ¹under our authority, and no man of us is missing. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and necklaces, ^ato make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.” 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of crafted articles. 52 All the gold of the offering which they offered up to the LORD, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels. 53 ^aThe men of war had taken plunder, every man for himself. 54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as ^aa memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD.

13 Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. 15 And Moses said to them, “Have you ¹spared ^aall the women? 16 ^aBehold, these ¹caused the sons of Israel, through the ²counsel of ^bBalaam, to ³trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD. 17 ^aNow therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man ¹intimately. 18 But all the ¹girls who have not known man ²intimately, ³spare for yourselves. 19 ^aAnd you, camp outside the camp seven days; whoever has killed any person and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves, you and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day. 20 You shall purify for yourselves every garment and every article of ¹leather and all the work of goats’ hair, and all articles of wood.”

32 Now the booty that remained from the spoil which the ¹men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep, 33 and 72,000 cattle, 34 and 61,000 donkeys, 35 and of human beings, of the women who had not known man ¹intimately, all the persons were 32,000.

36 The half, the portion of those who went out to war, was as follows: the number of sheep was 337,500, 37 and the LORD’S levy of the sheep was 675; 38 and the cattle were 36,000, from which the LORD’S levy was 72; 39 and the donkeys were 30,500, from which the LORD’S levy was 61; 40 and the human beings were 16,000, from whom the LORD’S levy was 32 persons. 41 Moses gave the levy which was the LORD’S offering to Eleazar the priest, just ^aas the LORD had commanded Moses.

42 As for the sons of Israel’s half, which Moses ¹separated from the men who had gone to war— 43 now the congregation’s half was 337,500 sheep, 44 and 36,000 cattle, 45 and 30,500 donkeys, 46 and the human beings were 16,000— 47 and from the sons of Israel’s half, Moses took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animals, and gave them to the Levites, who kept charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, approached Moses, 49 and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces, ^ato make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.” 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of wrought articles. 52 All the gold of the offering which they offered up to the LORD, from the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, was 16,750 shekels. 53 ^aThe men of war had taken booty, every man for himself. 54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it to the tent of meeting as ^aa memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD.

Num 25:16-18 4 A thousand fighting men from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war.” 5 So out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe were selected, twelve thousand armed for war. 6 Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to war with them, ^aand the sacred vessels of the sanctuary and ^bthe trumpets to blow the alarm in his hand. 7 They made war against Midian, just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they ^akilled every male. 8 They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: ^aEvi and Rekem and ^bZur the father of Cozbi and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; also ^cBalaam the son of Beor they killed with the sword. Num 22:31-35; Neh 13:1, 2 9 The sons of Israel captured the women of Midian and their children; and all their cattle, all their livestock, and all their property they took as spoil of war. 10 They burned all the cities where they lived, and all their encampments with fire. 11 ^aThey took all the plunder and all the spoils of war, both people and livestock. 12 Then they brought the captives, the spoils, and the plunder to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the congregation of the Israelites at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan River across from Jericho.

13 Moses and Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 But Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, who served in the war. 15 And Moses said to them, “Have you let ^aall the women live? 16 ^aLook, these are the women who caused the Israelites, by the counsel of ^bBalaam, to trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and so a plague came among the congregation of the LORD. Num 25:1-9; 31:8 17 ^aNow therefore, kill every male among the children, and kill every woman who is not a virgin. 18 But all the young girls who have not known a man intimately, keep alive for yourselves to marry. 19 ^aCamp outside the camp for seven days; whoever has killed any person and whoever has touched any dead body, purify yourselves and your captives, on the third day and on the seventh day. 20 You shall purify every garment and every article made of leather and all the things made of goats’ hair, and every article made of wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle, “This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses: 22 only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, 23 everything that can stand fire, you shall pass through fire, and it shall be clean. Nevertheless, it shall also be purified with the ^awater of purification to remove its impurity; and all that cannot stand fire such as fabrics you shall pass through water. 24 And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and be clean, and afterward you may come into the camp.”

25 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the leaders of the fathers’ households of the congregation are to take a count of the spoil of war that was captured, both people and livestock. 27 ^aDivide the spoil into two equal parts between those who were involved in the war, that is, those who went out to battle and all the rest of the congregation. 28 ^aLevy a tax for the LORD from the warriors who went to battle, one in five hundred of the persons, the oxen, the donkeys, and the flocks. 29 Take this tribute from the warriors’ half and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD. 30 From the Israelites’ half of the spoil you shall take one out of every fifty of the persons, the oxen, the donkeys, the flocks, and of all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who ^aare in charge of the tabernacle of the LORD.” 31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

32 The plunder that remained from the spoil of war which the warriors had taken, was 675,000 sheep, 33 and 72,000 cattle, 34 and 61,000 donkeys, 35 and 32,000 persons in all, of the Midianite women who were virgins.

36 The half share, the portion of those who went to war, was 337,500 sheep in number, 37 and the LORD’S levy (tax) of the sheep was 675; 38 the cattle were 36,000, from which the LORD’S levy was 72; 39 the donkeys were 30,500, from which the LORD’S levy was 61; 40 the persons were 16,000, from whom the LORD’S levy was 32 persons. 41 Moses gave the levy which was the LORD’S offering to Eleazar the priest, just ^aas the LORD had commanded Moses.

42 As for the Israelites’ half, which Moses separated from that of the warriors— 43 now the congregation’s half was 337,500 sheep, 44 and 36,000 cattle, 45 and 30,500 donkeys, 46 and 16,000 people— 47 and from the Israelites’ half, Moses took one out of every fifty, both of persons and animals, and gave them to the Levites, who were in charge of the tabernacle of the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and hundreds, approached Moses, 49 and they said to him, “Your servants have counted the warriors under our command, and not one man of us is missing. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD what each man obtained—articles of gold, armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings, necklaces—^ato make atonement for ourselves before the LORD.” 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all the handmade articles. 52 All the gold of the offering which they presented to the LORD from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds was 16,750 shekels. 53 For ^athe men of war had taken plunder, every man for himself. 54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle) as ^aa memorial for the sons of Israel before the LORD.

25 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers’ households of the congregation take a count of the loot ¹that was captured, both of man and of animal; 27 and ^adivide the loot between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation. 28 ^aAnd you shall exact a levy for Yahweh from the men of war who went out to battle, one ¹in five hundred of the persons and of the cattle and of the donkeys and of the sheep; 29 take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest, as a ¹contribution to Yahweh. 30 And from the sons of Israel’s half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty of the persons, of the cattle, of the donkeys, and of the sheep, from all the animals, and give them to the Levites who ^akeep charge of the tabernacle of Yahweh.” 31 Moses and Eleazar the priest did just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

32 Now the loot that remained from the plunder which the ¹men of war had plundered was 675,000 sheep, 33 and 72,000 cattle, 34 and 61,000 donkeys, 35 and of human beings, of the women who had not known man ¹intimately, all the persons were 32,000.

48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, came near to Moses, 49 and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing. 50 So we have brought near as an offering to Yahweh what each man found—articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—^ato make atonement for ourselves before Yahweh.” 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all kinds of crafted articles. 52 And all the gold from the contribution offering which they raised up in offering to Yahweh, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was 16,750 ¹shekels. 53 ^aThe men of war had taken plunder, every man for himself. 54 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and they brought it to the tent of meeting as ^aa memorial for the sons of Israel before Yahweh.
