Job Speaks of the Finality of Death

“^aMan, who is born of woman,Is ¹short-lived and ^bfull of turmoil.2 “^aLike a flower he comes out and withers.He also flees like ^ba shadow and does not remain.3 “You also ^aopen Your eyes on himAnd ^bbring ¹him into judgment with Yourself.4 “^aWho can make the clean out of the unclean?No one!5 “Since his days are determined,The ^anumber of his months is with You;And You have ¹set his limits so that he cannot pass.6 “^aLook away from him so that he may ¹rest,Until he ²fulfills his day like a hired worker.

7 “For there is hope for a tree,When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And its shoots will not ¹fail.8 “Though its roots grow old in the ground,And its stump dies in the dry soil,9 At the scent of water it will flourishAnd produce sprigs like a plant.10 “But ^aa man dies and lies prostrate.A person ^bpasses away, and where is he?11 “As ^awater ¹evaporates from the sea,And a river becomes parched and dried up,12 So ^aa man lies down and does not rise.Until the heavens no longer exist,¹He will not awake nor be woken from ²his sleep.

13 “Oh that You would hide me in ¹Sheol,That You would conceal me ^auntil Your wrath returns to You,That You would set a limit for me and remember me!14 “If a man dies, will he live again?All the days of my struggle I will waitUntil my relief comes.15 “You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for ^athe work of Your hands.16 “For now You ^anumber my steps,You do not ^bobserve my sin.17 “My wrongdoing is ^asealed up in a bag,And You cover over my ¹guilt.

18 “But the falling mountain ¹crumbles away,And the rock moves from its place;19 Water wears away stones,Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth;So You ^adestroy a man’s hope.20 “You forever overpower him and he ^adeparts;You change his appearance and send him away.21 “His sons achieve honor, but ^ahe does not know it;Or they become insignificant, and he does not perceive it.22 “However, his ¹body pains him,And his soul mourns for himself.”

7 “For there is hope for a tree,If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And that the shoots of it will not cease nor fail, but there is no such hope for man.8 “Though its roots grow old in the earthAnd its stump dies in the dry soil,9 Yet at the scent of water the stump of the tree will flourishAnd bring forth sprigs and shoots like a seedling.10 “But the brave, strong ^aman must die and lie face down;Man ^bbreathes his last, and where is he?11 “As ^awater evaporates from the sea,And a river drains and dries up,12 So ^aman lies down and does not rise again.Until the heavens are no longer,The dead will not awake nor be raised from their sleep.

13 “Oh, that You would hide me in Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) ,That You would conceal me ^auntil Your wrath is past,That You would set a definite time and then remember me and in Your lovingkindness imprint me on your heart!14 “If a man dies, will he live again?I will wait all the days of my struggleUntil my change and release will come. 18 “But as a mountain, if it falls, crumbles into nothing,And as the rock is moved from its place,19 Water wears away the stones,Its floods and torrents wash away the soil of the earth,So You O Lord ^adestroy the hope of man.20 “You prevail forever against him and overpower him, and he ^apasses on;You change his appearance and send him away from the presence of the living.21 “His sons achieve honor, and he does not know it;They become insignificant, and ^ahe is not aware of it.22 “But his body lamenting its decay grieves in pain over it,And his soul mourns over the loss of himself.”
