This is what the Lord ¹GOD showed me, and behold, He was forming a ^aswarm of locusts ²when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s mowing. 2 And it came about, ¹when it had ^afinished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,“^bLord GOD, please pardon!How can Jacob stand?For he is ^csmall.”

4 So the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD was calling to contend with them by ^afire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the ¹farmland. 5 Then I said,“^aLord GOD, please stop!^bHow can Jacob stand?For he is small.”

7 So He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing ¹by a ²vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand. 8 And the LORD said to me, “^aWhat do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,“Behold I am about to put a ^bplumb lineIn the midst of My people Israel.I will not ^1cspare them any longer.

10 Then Amaziah, the ^apriest of Bethel, sent word to ^bJeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has ^cconspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 11 For this is what Amos says: ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword, and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “^aGo, you seer, flee to the land of Judah; and eat bread there and do your prophesying there! 13 But ^ado not prophesy at Bethel any longer, for it is a ^bsanctuary of the king and a royal ¹residence.”

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the ^ason of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a ¹grower of sycamore figs. 15 But the LORD took me from ¹following the flock, and the LORD said to me, ‘Go ^aprophesy to My people Israel.’ 16 So now hear the word of the LORD: you are saying, ‘You ^ashall not prophesy against Israel ^bnor shall you ¹prophesy against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: ‘Your ^awife will become a prostitute in the city, your ^bsons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line, and you yourself will die ¹upon ^cunclean soil. Furthermore Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the ^ason of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a ¹grower of sycamore figs. 15 But the LORD took me from ¹following the flock and the LORD said to me, ‘Go ^aprophesy to My people Israel.’ 16 Now hear the word of the LORD: you are saying, ‘You ^ashall not prophesy against Israel ^bnor shall you ¹speak against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore, thus says the LORD, ‘Your ^awife will become a harlot in the city, your ^bsons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be parceled up by a measuring line and you yourself will die ¹upon ^cunclean soil. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”

4 Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD called for punishment with ^afire, and it devoured the great deep underground sources of water and began to consume the land. 5 Then I said,“O ^aLord GOD, please stop!^bHow can Jacob stand,For he is so small that he cannot endure this?”

7 Thus He showed me a vision, and behold, the Lord was standing by a vertical wall with a plumb line in His hand to determine if the wall was straight or if it needed to be destroyed. 2+@Kin 21:13; Is 34:11 8 The LORD said to me, “Amos, ^awhat do you see?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,“Behold, I am setting a ^bplumb line as a standardAmong My people Israel showing the defectiveness of the nation, requiring judgment.I shall not ^cspare them any longer. The door of mercy is shut.

10 Then Amaziah, the ^apriest of Bethel site of the golden calf shrine, sent word to ^1bJeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has ^cconspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel; the land is unable to endure all his words. 1+@Kin 12:31, 32 11 For in this way Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’” 12 Then Amaziah said to Amos, “^aGo, you seer, run for your life from Israel to the land of Judah your own country and eat bread and live as a prophet there! 13 But ^ado not prophesy any longer at Bethel, for it is the king’s ^bsanctuary and a royal residence.” Luke 10:10-12

14 Then Amos replied to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet by profession, nor am I a ^aprophet’s son; I am a herdsman and a grower of sycamore figs. 15 But the LORD took me as I followed the flock and the LORD said to me, ‘Go, ^aprophesy to My people Israel.’ 16 Now therefore, listen to the word of the LORD: You say, ‘^aYou shall not prophesy against Israel ^bnor shall you speak against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore, thus says the LORD, ‘Your ^awife shall become a prostitute in the city when the ¹Assyrians capture Samaria and your ^bsons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by a measuring line; you yourself shall die in an ^cunclean and defiled pagan land, and Israel shall certainly go from its land into exile.’”

And behold, the spring crop was after the king’s ²mowing. 2 And it happened ¹when it had ^acompleted eating the vegetation of the land, that I said,“^bLord Yahweh, please pardon!²How can Jacob rise up,For he is ^csmall?”

4 Thus Lord Yahweh showed me, and behold, Lord Yahweh was calling to contend with them by ^afire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the ¹farm land. 5 Then I said,“^aLord Yahweh, please stop!^1bHow can Jacob rise up, for he is small?”

7 Thus He showed me, and behold, the Lord was standing ¹by a wall made with a ²plumb line, and in His hand was a ³plumb line. 8 And Yahweh said to me, “^aWhat do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said,“Behold, I am about to put a ^bplumb lineIn the midst of My people Israel.I will ^cpass over them no longer.

14 Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, “I am not a prophet, nor am I the ^ason of a prophet; for I am a herdsman and a ¹grower of sycamore figs. 15 But Yahweh took me from ¹following the flock, and Yahweh said to me, ‘Go ^aprophesy to My people Israel.’ 16 So now, hear the word of Yahweh: you are saying, ‘You ^ashall not prophesy against Israel, ^bnor shall you drip out words against the house of Isaac.’ 17 Therefore, thus says Yahweh, ‘Your ^awife will play the harlot in the city, your ^bsons and your daughters will fall by the sword, your land will be divided up by a measuring line, and you yourself will die ¹upon ^cunclean land. Moreover, Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.’”
