Edom Will Be Humbled

The vision of Obadiah.This is what the Lord ¹GOD says concerning ^aEdom—^bWe have heard a report from the LORD,And a ^cmessenger has been sent among the nations saying,“^dArise, and let’s go up against her for battle”—

2 “Behold, I will make you ^asmall among the nations;You are greatly despised.3 “The ^aarrogance of your heart has deceived you,The one who lives in the clefts of ¹the ^brock,On the height of his dwelling place,Who says in his heart,‘^cWho will bring me down to earth?’4 “Though you ^amake your home high like the eagle,Though you set your nest among the ^bstars,From there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.5 “If ^athieves came to you,If ¹robbers by night—Oh how you will be ruined!—Would they not steal only ²until they had enough?If grape-pickers came to you,^bWould they not leave some gleanings?6 “Oh how Esau will be ^asearched,And his hidden treasures searched out!7 “All the ^apeople ¹allied with youWill send you to the border,And the people at peace with youWill deceive you and overpower you.They who eat your ^bbreadWill set an ambush for you.(There is ^cno understanding ²in him.)8 “Will I not on that day,” declares the LORD,“^aEliminate wise men from Edom,And understanding from the mountain of Esau?9 “Then your ^awarriors will be filled with terror, ^bTeman,So that everyone will be ^celiminated from the mountain of Esau by murder.

10 “Because of ^aviolence to your brother Jacob,Shame will cover you,^bAnd you will be eliminated forever.11 “On the day that you ^astood aloof,On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,And foreigners entered his gateAnd ^bcast lots for Jerusalem—^cYou too were as one of them.12 “^aDo not ¹gloat over your brother’s day,The day of his misfortune.And ^bdo not rejoice over the sons of JudahOn the day of their destruction;Yes, ^cdo not ²boastOn the day of their distress.13 “Do not enter the gate of My peopleOn the ^aday of their disaster.You indeed, do not ¹gloat over their catastropheOn the day of their disaster.And do not ^blay a hand on their wealthOn the day of their disaster.14 “Do not ^astand at the crossroadsTo eliminate their survivors;And do not hand over their refugeesOn the day of their distress.

The Day of the LORD and the Future

15 “For the ^aday of the LORD is near for all the nations.^bJust as you have done, it will be done to you.Your ^cdealings will return on your own head.16 “For just as you ^adrank on ^bMy holy mountain,All the nations ^cwill drink continually.They will drink ¹to the last drop,And become as if they had never existed.17 “But on Mount ^aZion there will be those who escape,And it will be holy.And the house of Jacob will ¹^bpossess their ²property.18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a ^afire,And the house of Joseph a flame;But the house of Esau will be like stubble.And they will set ¹them on fire and consume ²them,So that there will be ^bno survivor of the house of Esau,”For the LORD has spoken.19 Then those of the ¹Negev will ²^apossess the mountain of Esau,And those of the ³Shephelah the ^bPhilistine plain;Also, ^cthey will ⁴possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,And Benjamin the territory of Gilead.20 And the exiles of this army of the sons of Israel,Who are among the Canaanites as far as ^aZarephath,And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad,Will ¹possess the ^bcities of the Negev.21 ¹The ^adeliverers will ascend Mount ZionTo judge the mountain of Esau,And the ^bkingdom will be the LORD’S.

Edom Will Be Brought Down

The vision of Obadiah.Thus says Lord ¹Yahweh concerning ^aEdom—^bWe have heard a report from Yahweh,And an ^cenvoy has been sent among the nations saying,“^dArise! And let us arise against her for battle”—

2 “Behold, I will make you ^asmall among the nations;You are greatly despised.3 “The ^aarrogance of your heart has deceived you,You who dwell in the clefts of ¹the ^bcliff,In the height of your habitation,Who says in his heart,‘^cWho will bring me down to earth?’4 “Though you ^abuild loftily like the eagle,Though you set your nest among the ^bstars,From there I will bring you down,” declares Yahweh.5 “If ^athieves came to you,If ¹robbers by night—Oh how you will be ruined!—Would they not thieve only ²until they had enough?If grape gatherers came to you,^bWould they not allow some gleanings to remain?6 “Oh how Esau will be ^asearched outAnd his hidden treasures ransacked!7 “All the ^amen who have ¹a covenant with youWill send you forth to the border,And the men at peace with youWill deceive you and overpower you.They who eat your ^bbreadWill set an ambush for you.(There is ^cno discernment ²in him.)8 “Will I not on that day,” declares Yahweh,“^aCause the wise men to perish from EdomAnd discernment from the mountain of Esau?9 “Then your ^amighty men will be dismayed, O ^bTeman,So that each one may be ^ccut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

10 “Because of ^aviolence to your brother Jacob,¹You will be covered with shame,^bAnd you will be cut off forever.11 “On the day that you ^astood aloof,On the day that strangers took his wealth captiveAnd foreigners entered his gateAnd ^bcast lots for Jerusalem—^cYou too were as one of them.

12 “^aNow do not look on your brother’s day with triumph,The day of his misfortune.And ^bdo not be glad over the sons of JudahIn the day when they perish;And ^cdo not ¹let your mouth speak great thingsIn the day of their distress.13 “Do not enter the gate of My peopleIn the ^aday of their disaster.Indeed, you, do not look on their calamity with triumphIn the day of their disaster.And do not ^bsend out for their wealthIn the day of their disaster.14 “Do not ^astand at the fork of the roadTo cut down those among them who escape;And do not deliver over their survivorsIn the day of their distress.

The Day of Yahweh Is Near

15 “For the ^aday of Yahweh draws near on all the nations.^bAs you have done, it will be done to you.Your ^cdealings will return on your own head.16 “Because just as you all ^adrank on ^bMy holy mountain,All the nations ^cwill drink continually.They will drink and ¹swallow,And they will be as if they never were.17 “But on Mount ^aZion there will be those who escape,And it will be holy.And the house of Jacob will ^bpossess their possessions.18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a ^afireAnd the house of Joseph a flame;But the house of Esau will be as stubble.And they will set ¹them on fire and consume ²themSo that there will be ^bno survivor of the house of Esau,”For Yahweh has spoken.

The Kingdom of Yahweh

19 Then those of the ¹Negev will ^apossess the mountain of Esau,And those of the ²Shephelah, the ^bPhilistine plain;And they will ^cpossess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,And Benjamin will possess Gilead.20 And the exiles of this ¹military force of the sons of Israel,Who are among the Canaanites as far as ^aZarephath,And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad,Will possess the ^bcities of the Negev.21 And the ^asaviors will ascend Mount ZionTo judge the mountain of Esau,And the ^bkingdom will belong to Yahweh.
