On ^athe third day there was a wedding in ^bCana of Galilee, and the ^cmother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His ^adisciples were invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus *said to her, “^1aWhat business do you have with Me, ^bwoman? ^cMy hour has not yet come.” 5 His ^amother *said to the servants, “Whatever He tells you, do it.” 6 Now there were six stone waterpots standing there ^afor the Jewish custom of purification, containing ¹two or three measures each. 7 Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the ¹headwaiter.” And they took it to him. 9 Now when the headwaiter tasted the water ^awhich had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the groom, 10 and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the guests ^aare drunk, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This beginning of His ^1asigns Jesus did in Cana of ^bGalilee, and revealed His ^cglory; and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this He went down to ^aCapernaum, He and His ^bmother, and His ^cbrothers and His ^ddisciples; and they stayed there a few days.

13 ^aThe Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus ^bwent up to Jerusalem. 14 ^aAnd within the temple grounds He found those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. 15 And He made a whip of ¹cords, and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling ^athe doves He said, “Take these things away from here; stop making ^bMy Father’s house a ¹place of business!” 17 His ^adisciples remembered that it was written: “^bZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME.” 18 ^aThe Jews then said to Him, “^bWhat sign do You show us ¹as Your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “^aDestroy this ¹temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 ^aThe Jews then said, “It took ^bforty-six years to build this ¹temple, and yet You will raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking about ^athe ¹temple of His body. 22 So when He was raised from the dead, His ^adisciples ^bremembered that He said this; and they believed ^cthe Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at ^athe Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name as they ^bobserved His signs which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, because ^aHe knew all people, 25 and because He did not need anyone to testify about mankind, ^afor He Himself knew what was in mankind.

On ^athe third day there was a wedding at ^bCana of Galilee, and the ^cmother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His ^adisciples were invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was all gone, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “¹They have no more wine.” 4 Jesus said to her, “ Dear ^awoman, ^1bwhat is that to you and to Me? ^cMy time to act and to be revealed has not yet come.” Eccl 3:1 5 His ^amother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there ^afor the Jewish custom of purification (ceremonial washing) , containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. 8 Then He said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter of the banquet.” So they took it to him. 9 And when the headwaiter tasted the water which had ^aturned into wine, not knowing where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew) he called the bridegroom, 10 and said to him, “Everyone else serves his best wine first, and when people ^ahave ¹drunk freely, then he serves that which is not so good; but you have kept back the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of His ^asigns (attesting miracles) , Jesus did in Cana of ^bGalilee, and revealed His ^cglory displaying His deity and His great power openly, and His disciples believed confidently in Him as the Messiah—they adhered to, trusted in, and relied on Him. 12 After this He went down to ^aCapernaum, He and His ^bmother and ^cbrothers and His ^ddisciples; and they stayed there a few days.

13 Now ^athe Passover of the Jews was approaching, so Jesus ^bwent up to Jerusalem. 14 ^aAnd in the temple enclosure He found the ¹people who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting at their tables. Matt 21:12ff; Mark 11:15, 17 15 He made a whip of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 then to those who sold ^athe doves He said, “Take these things away! Stop making ^bMy Father’s house a place of commerce!” Ps 93:5 17 His ^adisciples remembered that it is written in the Scriptures, “^bZEAL (love, concern) FOR YOUR HOUSE and its honor WILL CONSUME ME.” Ps 69:9 18 Then ^athe Jews retorted, “^bWhat sign (attesting miracle) can You show us as proof of your authority for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, “^aDestroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then ^athe Jews replied, “It took ^bforty-six years to build this temple, and You will raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of ^athe temple which was His body. 22 So when He had risen from the dead, His ^adisciples ^bremembered what He had said. And they believed and trusted in and relied on ^cthe Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. Ps 16:10

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at ^athe Passover feast, many believed in His name identifying themselves with Him after ^bseeing His signs (attesting miracles) which He was doing. 24 But Jesus, for His part, did not entrust Himself to them, because ^aHe knew all people and understood the ¹superficiality and fickleness of human nature, 25 and He did not need anyone to testify concerning man and human nature, ^afor He Himself knew what was in man in their hearts—in the very core of their being. 1+@Sam 16:7
