For every high priest ^ataken from among men is appointed on behalf of people in ^bthings pertaining to God, in order to ^coffer both gifts and sacrifices ^dfor sins; 2 ^1ahe can deal gently with the ^bignorant and ^cmisguided, since he himself also is ^2dclothed in weakness; 3 and because of it he is obligated to offer sacrifices ^afor sins for himself, ^bas well as for the people. 4 And ^ano one takes the honor for himself, but receives it when he is called by God, just ^bas Aaron also was.

5 So too Christ ^adid not glorify Himself in becoming a ^bhigh priest, but it was He who ^csaid to Him,“^dYOU ARE MY SON,TODAY I HAVE FATHERED YOU”; 6 just as He also says in another passage,“^aYOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVERACCORDING TO ^bTHE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK.” 7 In the days of ¹His humanity, ^2aHe offered up both prayers and pleas with ^bloud crying and tears to the One ^cable to save Him ³from death, and He ⁴was heard because of His ^ddevout behavior. 8 Although He was ^aa Son, He learned ^bobedience from the things which He suffered. 9 And having been ^aperfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him, 10 being designated by God as ^aHigh Priest according to ^bthe order of Melchizedek.

11 Concerning ¹him we have much to say, and it is difficult to explain, since you have become ²poor listeners. 12 For though ¹by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you ^athe ^2belementary principles of the ^cactual words of God, and you have come to need ^dmilk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unacquainted with the word of righteousness, for he is an ^ainfant. 14 But solid food is for ^athe mature, who because of practice have their senses ^btrained to ^cdistinguish between good and evil.

For every high priest ^achosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in ^bthings relating to God, so that he may ^coffer both gifts and sacrifices ^dfor sins. 2 ^aHe is able to deal gently with the spiritually ^bignorant and ^cmisguided, since he is also ^dsubject to human weakness; 3 and because of this human weakness he is required to offer sacrifices ^afor sins, for himself as well ^bas for the people. 4 And besides, ^aone does not appropriate for himself the honor of being high priest, but he who is called by God, just ^bas Aaron was.

5 So too Christ ^adid not glorify Himself so as to be made a ^bhigh priest, but He was exalted and appointed by the One who ^csaid to Him,“^dYOU ARE MY SON,TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN (fathered) YOU declared Your authority and rule over the nations”; Ps 2:7 6 just as He also says in another place,“^aYOU ARE A PRIEST appointed FOREVERACCORDING TO ^bTHE ORDER OF ¹MELCHIZEDEK.” Ps 110:4 7 In the days of His earthly life, ^aJesus offered up both specific petitions and urgent supplications for that which He needed with ^bfervent crying and tears to the One who was always ^cable to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His ^dreverent submission toward God His sinlessness and His unfailing determination to do the Father’s will. 8 Although He was ^aa Son who had never been disobedient to the Father, He learned active, special ^bobedience through what He suffered. 9 And having been made ^aperfect uniquely equipped and prepared as Savior and retaining His integrity amid opposition, He became the source of eternal salvation an eternal inheritance to all those who obey Him, Is 45:17 10 being designated by God as ^aHigh Priest according to ^bthe order of ¹Melchizedek. Ps 110:4

11 Concerning this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull and sluggish in your spiritual hearing and disinclined to listen. 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers because of the time you have had to learn these truths, you actually need someone to teach you again ^athe ^belementary principles of God’s ^cword from the beginning, and you have come to be continually in need of ^dmilk, not solid food. 13 For everyone who lives on milk is doctrinally inexperienced and unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a spiritual ^ainfant. 14 But solid food is for ^athe spiritually mature, whose senses are ^btrained by practice to ^cdistinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.
