Now it came about in those days that ^athe Philistines gathered their armed camps for war, to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, “Know for certain that you will go out with me in the camp, you and your men.” 2 David said to Achish, “Very well, you will learn what your servant can do.” So Achish said to David, “Then I will assuredly make you ¹my bodyguard ^afor ²life!”

3 Now ^aSamuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned him and buried him ^bin Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the ^cmediums and spiritists from the land. 4 So the Philistines assembled and came and camped ^ain Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they camped in ^bGilboa. 5 When Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly. 6 ^aSo Saul inquired of the LORD, but ^bthe LORD did not answer him, either in ^cdreams, or by the ^dUrim, or by the prophets. 7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find for me a woman who is a medium, so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “Behold, ^athere is a woman who is a medium at ^bEn-dor.”

8 Then Saul ^adisguised himself by putting on different clothes, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, “^bConsult the spirit for me, please, and ^cbring up for me the one whom I shall ¹name for you.” 9 But the woman said to him, “Behold, you know ^awhat Saul has done, that he has eliminated the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why are you then setting a trap for my life, to bring about my death?” 10 So Saul swore an oath to her by the LORD, saying, “As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.” 11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” And he said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!” 13 But the king said to her, “Do not be afraid; but what do you see?” And the woman said to Saul, “I see a ¹divine being coming up from the earth.” 14 He said to her, “¹How does he appear?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, and ^ahe is wrapped in a robe.” Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and ^bhe bowed with his face to the ground and paid ²homage.

15 And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied, “I am very distressed, for the Philistines are waging war against me, and ^aGod has abandoned me and ^bno longer answers me, either through prophets or in dreams; therefore I have called you, so that you may let me know what I should do.” 16 Samuel said, “But why ask me, since the LORD has abandoned you and has become your enemy? 17 And the LORD has done ¹just ^aas He spoke through me; for the LORD has torn the kingdom from your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 Just as ^ayou did not ¹obey the LORD and did not execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, so the LORD has done this thing to you this day. 19 Furthermore, the LORD will also hand Israel along with you over to the Philistines; so tomorrow ^ayou and your sons will be with me. Indeed, the LORD will hand the army of Israel over to the Philistines!”

20 Then Saul immediately fell full length to the ground and was very afraid because of Samuel’s words; there was no strength in him either, because he had eaten no ¹food all day and all night. 21 The woman came to Saul and saw that he was utterly horrified, and she said to him, “Behold, your servant has ¹obeyed you, and ^aI have ²taken my life in my hand and have listened to your words which you spoke to me. 22 So now you too, please listen to the voice of your servant, and let me serve you a piece of bread, and eat it, so that you will have strength when you go on your way.” 23 But he refused and said, “^aI will not eat.” ^bHowever, his servants together with the woman urged him, and he listened to ¹them. So he got up from the ground and sat on ^cthe bed. 24 Now the woman had a ^afattened calf in the house, and she quickly slaughtered it; then she ^btook flour, kneaded it and baked unleavened bread from it. 25 She then served it to Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they got up and left that night.

15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” And Saul answered, “I am greatly distressed, for the Philistines are waging war against me, and ^aGod has turned away from me and ^bno longer answers me, either by the hand of the prophets or by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I should do.” 16 And Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since Yahweh has turned away from you and has become your adversary? 17 So Yahweh has done ¹accordingly ^aas He spoke by my hand, for Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 As ^ayou did not listen to the voice of Yahweh and did not execute His burning anger on Amalek, so Yahweh has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover Yahweh will also give over Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, therefore tomorrow ^ayou and your sons will be with me. Indeed Yahweh will give over the camp of Israel into the hands of the Philistines!”

20 Then Saul quickly fell full length upon the ground and was very afraid because of the words of Samuel; also there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no ¹food all day and all night. 21 And the woman came to Saul and saw that he was terrified and said to him, “Behold, your servant-woman has listened to your voice, and ^aI have ¹taken my life in my hand and have listened to your words which you spoke to me. 22 So now also, please listen to the voice of your servant-woman, and let me set a piece of bread before you that you may eat and have strength when you go on your way.” 23 But he refused and said, “^aI will not eat.” ^bHowever, his servants together with the woman urged him, and he listened to ¹them. So he arose from the ground and sat on ^cthe bed. 24 And the woman had a ^afattened calf in the house, and she quickly sacrificed it; and she ^btook flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread from it. 25 And she brought it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they arose and went away that night.

15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” And Saul answered, “I am greatly distressed; for the Philistines are waging war against me, and ^aGod has departed from me and ^bno longer answers me, either through prophets or by dreams; therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I should do.” 16 Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the LORD has departed from you and has become your adversary? 17 The LORD has done ¹accordingly ^aas He spoke through me; for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 18 As ^ayou did not ¹obey the LORD and did not execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, so the LORD has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover the LORD will also give over Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, therefore tomorrow ^ayou and your sons will be with me. So he arose from the ground and sat on ^cthe bed. 24 The woman had a ^afattened calf in the house, and she quickly slaughtered it; and she ^btook flour, kneaded it and baked unleavened bread from it. 25 She brought it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they arose and went away that night.

In those days ^athe Philistines gathered their forces for war to fight against Israel. Achish said to David, “Understand for certain that you and your men will go out with me to battle.” 2 David said to Achish, “All right, you shall know what your servant can do.” So Achish said to David, “Therefore I will make you my bodyguard ^afor life.”

3 Now ^aSamuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him ^bin Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed ^cthe mediums and the spiritists (soothsayers) from the land. 4 The Philistines assembled and came and camped at ^aShunem; and Saul gathered all the Israelites and they camped at ^bGilboa. 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid and ¹badly shaken. 6 ^aSo Saul inquired of the LORD, but ^bthe LORD did not answer him, either by ^cdreams or by ^dUrim used like lots by the priest to determine the will of God or by prophets. Prov 1:24-30 7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find for me a woman who is a medium between the living and the dead, so that I may go to her and ask her advice.” His servants said to him, “^aThere is a woman who is a medium at ^bEn-dor.”

8 So Saul ^adisguised himself by wearing different clothes, and he left with two men, and they came to the woman at night. He said to her, “^bConjure up for me, please, and ^cbring up from the dead for me the spirit whom I shall name to you.” 9 But the woman said to him, “See here, you know ^awhat Saul has done, how he has cut off (eliminated) those who are mediums and spiritists from the land. So why are you laying a trap for my life, to cause my death?” 10 Then Saul swore an oath to her by the LORD, saying, “As the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this.” 11 So the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?” He said, “Bring up Samuel for me.” 12 When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed with a loud voice; and she said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!” 13 The king said to her, “Do not be afraid; but tell me what do you see?” The woman said to Saul, “I see a ¹divine superhuman being coming up from the earth.” 14 He said to her, “What is his appearance?” And she said, “An old man is coming up, ^awrapped in a robe.” Then Saul knew that it was Samuel, and ^bhe bowed with his face to the ground and paid respect to him.

15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am greatly distressed; for the Philistines are making war against me, and ^aGod has left me and ^bno longer answers me, either through prophets or by dreams; therefore I have called you to make known to me what I should do.” 16 Samuel said, “Why then do you ask me, since the LORD has left you and has become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done to you just ^aas He said through me when I was with you; for the LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, to David. 1+@Sam 15:22-28 18 Because ^ayou did not obey the voice of the LORD and did not execute His fierce wrath on Amalek, therefore the LORD has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover, the LORD will also put Israel along with you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow ^ayou and your sons will be with me among the dead. Indeed, the LORD will put the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.”

20 Then Saul immediately fell full length on the earth floor of the medium’s house, and was very afraid because of Samuel’s words; ¹and he was thoroughly exhausted because he had not eaten all day and all night. 21 The woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly troubled, and she said to him, “Look, your maidservant has obeyed you, and ^aI have taken my life in my hand and have listened to everything you said to me. 22 So now, please listen to the voice of your maidservant, and let me set a piece of bread before you, and eat, so that you may have strength when you go on your way.” 23 But he refused and said, “^aI will not eat.” ^bBut his servants together with the woman urged him, and he finally listened to them. So he got up from the ground and sat on ^cthe bed. 24 The woman had a ^afattened calf in the house; she quickly killed it, and ^btook flour, kneaded it and baked unleavened bread. 25 She brought it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they got up and went away that night.
