Ephraim Reminded

¹Ephraim feeds on ^awind,And pursues the ^beast wind continually;He multiplies lies and violence.Moreover, ²he makes a covenant with Assyria,And oil is brought to Egypt.2 The LORD also has a ^acase against Judah,And will punish Jacob ^baccording to his ways;He will repay him according to his deeds.3 In the womb he ^atook his brother by the heel,And in his mature strength he ^bcontended with God.4 Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;He wept and ^aimplored His favor.He found Him at ^bBethel,And there He spoke with us,5 And the LORD, the God of armies,The LORD is His ¹^aname.6 So as for you, ^areturn to your God,^bMaintain ¹kindness and justice,And ^cwait for your God continually.7 A ¹merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent ^abalances,Loves to exploit.8 And Ephraim said, “I have certainly become ^arich,I have found wealth for myself;In all my labors they will find in me^bNo wrongdoing, which would be sin.”9 But I have been the LORD your God since the land of Egypt;I will make you ^alive in tents again,As in the days of the appointed festival.10 I have also spoken to the ^aprophets,And I ¹provided many visions,And through the prophets I spoke in ^bparables.11 Is there injustice in Gilead?Certainly they are worthless.In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,Yes, ^atheir altars are like stone heapsBeside the furrows of a field.

12 Now ^aJacob fled to the ¹land of Aram,And ^bIsrael worked for a wife,And for a wife he kept sheep.13 But by a ^aprophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt,And by a prophet he was protected.14 ^aEphraim has provoked God to bitter anger;So his Lord will leave his ^bguilt for bloodshed on himAnd bring his ^cdisgrace back to him.

Yahweh’s Contention with Judah

2 And Yahweh has a ^acontention with JudahAnd will punish Jacob ^baccording to his ways;He will cause everything to return to him according to his deeds.3 In the womb he ^atook his brother by the heel,And in his maturity he ¹^bwrestled with God.4 Indeed, he ¹wrestled with the angel and prevailed;He wept and ^asought His favor.He found Him at ^bBethel,And there He spoke with us,5 Even Yahweh, the God of hosts,Yahweh is His ¹^aname of remembrance.6 Therefore, ^areturn to your God,^bKeep lovingkindness and justice,And ^chope in your God continually.7 A ¹merchant, in whose hands are deceptive ^abalances,He loves to oppress.8 And Ephraim said, “Surely I have become ^arich;I have found wealth for myself;In all my labors they will find in me^bNo iniquity, which would be sin.”9 But I have been Yahweh your God since the land of Egypt;I will make you ^asettle in tents again,As in the days of the appointed festival.10 And I have spoken to the ^aprophets,And I ¹made visions abound,And by the hand of the prophets I gave ^bparables.11 Is there wickedness in Gilead?Surely they are worthless.In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;Yes, ^atheir altars are like the stone heapsBeside the furrows of the field.

12 Now ^aJacob fled to the field of Aram,And ^bIsrael worked for a wife,And for a wife he kept sheep.13 But by a ^aprophet Yahweh brought Israel up from Egypt,And by a prophet he was kept.14 ^aEphraim has provoked to bitter anger;So his Lord will leave his ^bbloodguilt on himAnd cause his ^creproach to return to him.

Ephraim feeds on the emptiness of the ^awindAnd continually pursues the parching ^beast wind which brings destruction;Every day he multiplies lies and violence.Further, he makes a covenant with AssyriaAnd (olive) oil is carried to Egypt to seek alliances. Gen 25:26; 27:364 He wrestled with the angel and prevailed;He wept in repentance and ^asought His favor.He met Him at ^bBethelAnd there God spoke with him and through him with us— Gen 28:12-19; 32:28; 35:1-155 Even the LORD, the God of hosts,The ^aname of Him who spoke with Jacob is the LORD.6 Therefore, ^areturn in repentance to your God,^bObserve and highly regard kindness and justice,And ^cwait expectantly for your God continually.7 A merchant, in whose hand are ^afalse and fraudulent balances;He loves to oppress and exploit.8 Ephraim said, “I have indeed become ^arich and powerful as a nation;I have found wealth for myself.In all my labors they will not find in me^bAny wickedness that would be sin.” Rev 3:179 But I have been the LORD your God since you became a nation in the land of Egypt;I will make you ^alive in tents again,As in the days of the appointed and solemn ¹festival. Lev 23:39-4310 I have also spoken to you through the ^aprophets,And I gave them many visions to make My will known,And through the prophets I gave ^bparables to appeal to your sense of right and wrong.11 Is there wickedness (idolatry) in Gilead?Surely the people there are worthless.In Gilgal they defy Me when they sacrifice bulls,^aYes, after My judgment their pagan altars are like the stone heapsIn the furrows of the fields.

12 ^aNow Jacob (Israel) fled into the open country of Aram (Paddan-aram) , Gen 28:2, 5And there ^bIsrael (Jacob) worked and served for a wife,And for a wife he kept sheep. Gen 29:18-20; 30:31; 31:38-4113 And by a ^aprophet (Moses) the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt,And by a prophet Israel was preserved.14 ^aEphraim has provoked most bitter anger;So his Lord will leave his ^bbloodguilt on him invoking punishmentAnd bring back to him his ^cshame and dishonor.
