^aNow on the first day of the week ^bMary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and *saw ^cthe stone already removed from the tomb. 2 So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other ^adisciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “^bThey have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have put Him.” 3 ^aSo Peter and the other disciple left, and they were going to the tomb. 4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead, faster than Peter, and came to the tomb first; 5 and he ^astooped to look in, and *saw the ^blinen wrappings lying there; however he did not go in. 6 So Simon Peter also *came, following him, and he entered the tomb; and he *looked at the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and ^athe face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the ^blinen wrappings but folded up in a place by itself. 8 So the other disciple who ^ahad first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. 9 For ^athey did not yet understand the Scripture, ^bthat He must rise from the dead. 10 So the disciples went away again ^ato their own homes.

11 ^aBut Mary was standing outside the tomb, weeping; so as she wept, she ^bstooped to look into the tomb; 12 and she *saw ^atwo angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they *said to her, “^aWoman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because ^bthey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they put Him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and *^asaw Jesus standing there, and yet she ^bdid not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus *said to her, “^aWoman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Thinking that He was the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you put Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him ^ain ¹Hebrew, “^bRabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17 Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to ^aMy brothers and say to them, ‘I am ^bascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18 ^aMary Magdalene *came and ^bannounced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

19 Now when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were ¹shut where the disciples were together due to ^afear of the ²Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and *said to them, “^bPeace be to you.” 20 And when He had said this, ^aHe showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then ^brejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “^aPeace be to you; ^bjust as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 ^aIf you forgive the sins of any, their sins ¹have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

24 But ^aThomas, one of ^bthe twelve, who was called ^1cDidymus, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in ^aHis hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, ^bI will not believe.”

26 ¹Eight days later His disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been ²shut, and stood in their midst and said, “^aPeace be to you.” 27 Then He *said to Thomas, “^aPlace your finger here, and see My hands; and take your hand and put it into My side; and do not continue in disbelief, but be a believer.” 28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you now believed? ^aBlessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

30 ^aSo then, many other ^1bsigns Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written ^aso that you may believe that Jesus is the ¹Christ, ^bthe Son of God; and that by ^cbelieving you may have life in His name.

For whom are you looking?” Supposing that He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you are the one who has carried Him away from here, tell me where you have put Him, and I will take Him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him ^ain ¹Hebrew, “^bRabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “¹Do not hold Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to ^aMy brothers and tell them, ‘I am ^bascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’” 18 ^aMary Magdalene came, ^breporting to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that He had said these things to her.

19 So when it was evening on that same day, the first day of the week, though the disciples were meeting behind barred doors for ^afear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them, and said, “^1bPeace to you.” 20 After He said this, ^aHe showed them His hands and His side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were ^bfilled with great joy. 21 Then Jesus said to them again, “^aPeace to you; ^bas the Father has sent Me, I also send you as My representatives.” 22 And when He said this, He breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8; 2:1-3 23 ^aIf you forgive the sins of anyone they are forgiven because of their faith; if you retain the sins of anyone, they are retained and remain unforgiven because of their unbelief.”

24 But ^aThomas, one of ^bthe twelve disciples, who was called ^cDidymus (the twin) , was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples kept telling him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in ^aHis hands the marks of the nails, and put my finger into the nail prints, and put my hand into His side, ^bI will never believe.”

26 Eight days later His disciples were again inside the house, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, though the doors had been barred, and stood among them and said, “^aPeace to you.” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “^aReach here with your finger, and see My hands; and put out your hand and place it in My side. Do not be unbelieving, but stop doubting and believe.” Luke 24:39 28 Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, do you now believe? ^aBlessed happy, spiritually secure, and favored by God are they who did not see Me and yet believed in Me.”

30 ^aThere are also many other ^bsigns (attesting miracles) that Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written ^aso that you may believe with a deep, abiding trust that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) , ^bthe Son of God; and that by ^cbelieving and trusting in and relying on Him you may have life in His name. Ps 2:7, 12
