Now in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar ^1ahad dreams; and his spirit was troubled and his ^bsleep ²left him. 2 Then the king ¹gave orders to call in the ^asoothsayer priests, the conjurers, the sorcerers, and the ²Chaldeans, to ³tell the king his dreams. So they came in and stood before the king. 3 The king said to them, “I ^1ahad a dream, and my spirit ²is anxious to ³understand the dream.”

4 Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in ^1aAramaic: “^bO king, live forever! ^cTell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 5 The king replied to the Chaldeans, “The command ¹from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be ^2atorn limb from limb and your houses will be turned into a rubbish heap. 6 But if you declare the dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me ^agifts and a reward and great honor; therefore declare to me the dream and its interpretation.” 7 They answered a second time and said, “Let the king ^atell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 8 The king replied, “I know for certain that you are trying to buy time, because you have perceived that the command ¹from me is firm, 9 that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only ^aone ¹decree for you. For you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt ²words before me until the ³situation is changed; therefore tell me the dream, so that I may ^bknow that you can declare to me its interpretation.” 10 The Chaldeans answered ¹the king and said, “There is no person on earth who could declare the matter ²to the king, because no great king or ruler has ever asked anything like this of any ^asoothsayer priest, sorcerer, or Chaldean. 11 Moreover, the thing which the king demands is difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it ¹to the king except ^agods, whose ^bdwelling place is not with mortal flesh.”

12 Because of this, the king became ^aangry and extremely furious, and he gave orders to kill all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the ¹decree was issued that the wise men be killed; and they looked for ^aDaniel and his friends, to ²kill them.

14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to ^aArioch, the captain of the king’s ¹bodyguard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon; 15 he said to Arioch, the king’s officer, “For what reason is the decree from the king so harsh?” Then Arioch informed Daniel of the matter. 16 So Daniel went in and requested of the king that he would give him a grace period, so that he might declare the interpretation to the king.

17 Then Daniel went to his house and informed his friends, ^aHananiah, Mishael and Azariah, about the matter, 18 so that they might ^arequest compassion from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his friends would not be ^bkilled with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19 Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night ^avision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; 20 Daniel said,“May the name of God be ^ablessed forever and ever,For ^bwisdom and power belong to Him.

24 Thereupon, Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to kill the wise men of Babylon; he went and said this to him: “^aDo not kill the wise men of Babylon! Take me ¹into the king’s presence, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.”

25 Then Arioch hurriedly ^abrought Daniel ¹into the king’s presence and spoke to him as follows: “I have found a man among the ^2bexiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!” 26 The king said to Daniel, whose name was ^aBelteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the secret about which the king has inquired, neither ^awise men, sorcerers, soothsayer priests, nor diviners are able to declare it to the king. 28 However, there is a ^aGod in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the ^1blatter days. This was your dream and the ^cvisions ²in your mind while on your bed. 29 As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts ¹turned to what would take place ²in the future; and ^aHe who reveals secrets has made known to you what will take place. 30 But as for me, this secret has not been revealed to me ¹for any ^awisdom ²residing in me more than in any other living person, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may understand the ^bthoughts of your ³mind.

31 “You, O king, were watching and behold, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and ¹of extraordinary radiance, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was ^2aawesome. 32 The ^ahead of that statue was made of fine gold, its chest and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, and its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 You ¹continued watching until a ^astone was broken off ^bwithout hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and ^ccrushed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed to pieces ¹all at the same time, and they were ^alike chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that ^bnot a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great ^cmountain and filled the entire earth.

36 “This was the dream; and now we will tell ^aits interpretation before the king. 37 You, O king, are the ^aking of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the ¹kingdom, the ^bpower, the strength, and the honor; 38 and wherever the sons of mankind live, or the ^aanimals of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has handed them over to you and has made you ruler over them all. You are the head of gold.

39 And after you another kingdom will arise inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.

40 Then there will be a ^afourth kingdom as strong as iron; just as iron smashes and crushes everything, so, like iron that crushes, it will smash and crush all these things. 41 And in that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have within it some of the toughness of iron, since you saw the iron mixed with ¹common clay. 42 And just as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong, and part of it will be fragile. 43 In that you saw the iron mixed with ¹common clay, they will combine with one another ²in ³their descendants; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not combine with pottery.

44 And in the days of those kings the ^aGod of heaven will ^bset up a ^ckingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be ¹left for another people; it will ^dcrush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. 45 Just as you saw that a ^astone was broken off from the mountain without hands, and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the ^bgreat God has made known to the king what ^cwill take place ¹in the future; so the dream is certain and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and paid ^ahumble respect to Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and ^bincense. 47 The king responded to Daniel and said, “^aYour God truly is a ^bGod of gods and a Lord of kings and a ^crevealer of secrets, since you have been able to reveal this secret.” 48 Then the king ^1apromoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the entire ^bprovince of Babylon, and chief ²prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 And Daniel made a request of the king, and he ^aappointed ^bShadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king’s ^1ccourt.

4 Then the Chaldeans spoke to the king in ^1aAramaic: “^bO king, live forever! ^cSay the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, “The word from me is firm: if you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you will be ^1atorn limb from limb, and your houses will be made a rubbish heap. 6 But if you declare the dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me ^agifts and a reward and great glory; therefore declare to me the dream and its interpretation.” 7 They answered a second time and said, “Let the king ^asay the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 8 The king answered and said, “I know for certain that you are buying time, inasmuch as you have seen that the word from me is firm, 9 that if you do not make the dream known to me, there is only ^aone law for you. Indeed, you have agreed together to speak lying and corrupt ¹words before me until the time is changed; therefore say the dream to me, that I may ^bknow that you can declare to me its interpretation.” 10 The Chaldeans answered ¹the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who is able to declare the matter ²for the king, inasmuch as no great king or powerful ruler has ever asked about a matter like this of any ^3amagician, conjurer, or Chaldean. 11 Moreover, the matter which the king asks is ¹difficult, and there is no one else who could declare it ²to the king except ^agods, whose ^bdwelling place is not with flesh.”

12 Because of this the king became ^aindignant and very furious and said for them to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the law went forth that the wise men were to be killed; and they sought out ^aDaniel and his friends to ¹kill them.

14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to ^aArioch, the captain of the king’s ¹bodyguard, who had gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon; 15 he answered and said to Arioch, a powerful ¹official for the king, “For what reason is the law from the king so ²urgent?” Then Arioch made the matter known to Daniel. 16 So Daniel went in and sought from the king that he would ¹give him time, in order that he might declare the interpretation to the king.

17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to his friends, to ^aHananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 18 so that they might ^aseek compassion from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be ^bdestroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night ^avision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; 20 Daniel answered and said,“Let the name of God be ^ablessed forever and ever,For ^bwisdom and might belong to Him.

24 Therefore, Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said thus to him: “^aDo not destroy the wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the king, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.”

25 Then Arioch hurriedly ^abrought Daniel before the king and said thus to him: “I have found a man among the ^1bexiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!” 26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was ^aBelteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the mystery about which the king is asking, neither ^awise men, conjurers, ¹magicians, nor diviners are able to declare it to the king. 28 However, there is a ^aGod in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the ^1blast days. This was your dream and the ^cvisions of your head while on your bed. 29 As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts ¹turned to what would happen ²in the future; and ^aHe who reveals mysteries has made known to you what will happen. 30 But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me by any ^awisdom which is in me more than in any other living man, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may know the ^bthoughts of your heart.

36 “This was the dream; now we will say ^aits interpretation before the king. 37 You, O king, are the ^aking of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the ¹kingdom, the ^bpower, the strength, and the glory; 38 and wherever the sons of men inhabit, or the ^abeasts of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has given them into your hand and has made you rule with power over them all. You are the head of gold. 39 But after you there will arise another kingdom inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule with power over all the earth. 40 Then there will be a ^afourth kingdom as strong as iron; inasmuch as iron crushes and shatters all things, so, like iron that breaks in pieces, it will crush and break all these in pieces. 41 Now in that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron; it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have in it the toughness of iron, inasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with ¹common clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so some of the kingdom will be strong and part of it will be brittle. 43 And in that you saw the iron mixed with ¹common clay; they will combine with one another ²in the seed of men; but they will not cling to one another, even as iron does not combine with clay. 44 And in the days of those kings the ^aGod of heaven will ^bcause a ^ckingdom to rise up which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be ¹left for another people; it will ^dcrush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that a ^astone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold, the ^bgreat God has made known to the king what ^cwill happen ¹in the future; so the dream is certain, and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and did ^ahomage to Daniel and said for them to present to him an offering and ^1bfragrant incense. 47 The king answered Daniel and said, “Truly ^ayour God is a ^bGod of gods and a Lord of kings and a ^crevealer of mysteries since you have been able to reveal this mystery.” 48 Then the king ^1apromoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him rule with power over the whole ^bprovince of Babylon and chief ²prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 And Daniel sought of the king, and he ^aappointed ^bShadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king’s ^1ccourt.

So they came in and stood before the king. 3 The king said to them, “I ^ahad a dream, and my spirit is troubled and anxious to know the content and meaning of the dream.”

4 Then the Chaldeans said to the king in ^1aAramaic, “^bO king, live forever! ^cTell the dream to your servants, and we will declare the interpretation.” 5 The king replied to the Chaldeans, “My command is firm and unchangeable: if you do not reveal to me the content of the dream along with its interpretation, you shall be ^acut into pieces and your houses shall be made a heap of rubbish. 6 But if you tell me the content of the dream along with its interpretation, you shall receive from me ^agifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and its interpretation.” 7 They answered again, “Let the king ^atell the dream to his servants, and we will explain its interpretation to you.” 8 The king replied, “I know for certain that you are bargaining for time, because you have seen that my command to you is firm and irrevocable. 9 If you will not reveal to me the content of the dream, there is but ^aone sentence for you; for you have already prepared lying and corrupt words and you have agreed together to speak them before me hoping to delay your execution until the situation is changed. Therefore, tell me the dream first, and then I will ^bknow with confidence that you can give me its interpretation.” 10 The Chaldeans answered the king and said, “There is not a man on earth who can tell the king this matter, for no king, lord or ruler has ever asked such a thing as this of any ^amagician or enchanter or Chaldean. 11 Furthermore, what the king demands is an unusual and difficult thing indeed! No one except the ^agods can reveal it to the king, and their ^bdwelling is not with mortal flesh.”

12 Because of this the king was ^aindignant and extremely furious and gave a command to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree went out that the wise men were to be killed; and they looked for ^aDaniel and his companions to put them to death.

14 Then Daniel replied with discretion and wisdom to ^aArioch, the captain of the king’s ¹bodyguard, who had gone out to execute the wise men of Babylon; 15 he said to Arioch, the king’s captain, “Why is the decree from the king so harsh and urgent?” Then Arioch explained the matter to Daniel. 16 So Daniel went in and asked the king to appoint a date and give him time, so that he might reveal to the king the interpretation of the dream.

17 Then Daniel returned to his house and discussed the matter with ^aHananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, 18 in order that they might seek ^acompassion from the God of heaven regarding this secret, so that Daniel and his companions would not be ^bexecuted with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

19 Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a ^avision of the night, and Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered,“^aBlessed be the name of God forever and ever,For ^bwisdom and power belong to Him.

24 So Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and said this to him: “^aDo not execute the wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the king, and I will reveal to the king the interpretation of his dream.”

25 Then Arioch hurriedly ^abrought Daniel before the king and said this to him: “I have found a man among the ^bexiles of Judah who can explain to the king the interpretation of the dream.” 26 The king said to Daniel, whose Babylonian name was ^aBelteshazzar, “Are you able to reveal to me the content of the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered the king and said, “Regarding the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither the ^awise men, enchanters, magicians, nor astrologers are able to answer the king, 28 but there is a ^aGod in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the ^blatter days (end of days) . This was your dream and the ^cvision that appeared in your mind while on your bed. 29 As for you, O king, as you were lying on your bed thoughts came into your mind about what will take place in the future; and ^aHe who reveals secrets has shown you what will occur. 30 But as for me, this secret has not been revealed to me because my ^awisdom is greater than that of any other living man, but in order to make the interpretation known to the king, and so that you may understand fully the ^bthoughts of your mind.

31 “You, O king, were looking, and behold, there was a single great statue; this image, which was large and of unsurpassed splendor, stood before you, and its appearance was ^aawesome and terrifying. 32 As for this ¹statue, its ^ahead was made of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay pottery. 34 As you were looking, a ^1astone was cut out ^bwithout human hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and ^ccrushed them. 1+@Pet 2:3-8 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold were crushed together and became ^alike the chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that ^bnot a trace of them could be found. 36 “This was the dream; now we will tell the king its ^ainterpretation. 37 You, O king, are the ^aking of earthly kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the ^bpower, the strength and the glory; Jer 25:9; 27:6; 28:14 38 and wherever the sons of men dwell, and the ^abeasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens, He has given them into your hand and has made you ruler over them all. You king of Babylon are the head of gold.

39 After you will arise another kingdom (Medo-Persia) inferior to you, and then a third kingdom of bronze (Greece under Alexander the Great) , which will rule over all the earth.

40 Then a ^afourth kingdom (Rome) will be strong as iron, for iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things; and like iron which crushes things in pieces, it will break and crush all these others. Dan 7:7, 23 41 And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but there will be in it some of the durability and strength of iron, just as you saw the iron mixed with common clay. 42 As the ten toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so some of the kingdom will be strong, and another part of it will be brittle. 43 And as you saw the iron mixed with common clay, so they will combine with one another in the seed of men; but they will not merge for such diverse things or ideologies cannot unite, even as iron does not mix with clay.

44 In the days of those final ten kings the ^aGod of heaven will ^bset up a ^ckingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will its sovereignty be left for another people; but it will ^dcrush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it will stand forever. Dan 7:14-17; Luke 1:31-33; Rev 11:15 45 Just as you saw that a ^astone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold, the ^bgreat God has revealed to the king what ^cwill take place in the future; so the dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell face downward and paid ^arespect to Daniel as a great prophet of the highest God, and gave orders for an offering and ^bfragrant incense to be presented to him in honor of his God. 47 The king answered Daniel and said, “Most certainly ^ayour God is the ^bGod of gods and the Lord of kings and a ^crevealer of mysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery!” Prov 3:32; Rev 19:16 48 Then the king ^apromoted Daniel to an exalted position and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the entire ^bprovince of Babylon and chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 And Daniel made a request of the king, and he ^aappointed ^bShadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the ^ccourt of the king.

25 Then Arioch hurriedly ^abrought Daniel ¹into the king’s presence and spoke to him as follows: “I have found a man among the ^2bexiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!” 26 The king said to Daniel, whose name was ^aBelteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” 27 Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither ^awise men, conjurers, ¹magicians nor diviners are able to declare it to the king. 28 However, there is a ^aGod in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the ^1blatter days. This was your dream and the ^cvisions ²in your mind while on your bed. 29 As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts ¹turned to what would take place ²in the future; and ^aHe who reveals mysteries has made known to you what will take place. 30 But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me for any ^awisdom ¹residing in me more than in any other living man, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may ²understand the ^bthoughts of your ³mind.

31 “You, O king, were looking and behold, there was a single great statue; that statue, which was large and ¹of extraordinary splendor, was standing in front of you, and its appearance was ^aawesome. 32 The ^ahead of that statue was made of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay. 34 You ¹continued looking until a ^astone was cut out ^bwithout hands, and it struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and ^ccrushed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were crushed ¹all at the same time and became ^alike chaff from the summer threshing floors; and the wind carried them away so that ^bnot a trace of them was found. But the stone that struck the statue became a great ^cmountain and filled the whole earth.

36 “This was the dream; now we will tell ^aits interpretation before the king. 37 You, O king, are the ^aking of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the ¹kingdom, the ^bpower, the strength and the glory; 38 and wherever the sons of men dwell, or the ^abeasts of the field, or the birds of the sky, He has given them into your hand and has caused you to rule over them all. You are the head of gold.

39 After you there will arise another kingdom inferior to you, then another third kingdom of bronze, which will rule over all the earth.

40 Then there will be a ^afourth kingdom as strong as iron; inasmuch as iron crushes and shatters all things, so, like iron that breaks in pieces, it will crush and break all these in pieces. 41 In that you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, it will be a divided kingdom; but it will have in it the toughness of iron, inasmuch as you saw the iron mixed with ¹common clay. 42 As the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of pottery, so some of the kingdom will be strong and part of it will be brittle. 43 And in that you saw the iron mixed with ¹common clay, they will combine with one another ²in the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, even as iron does not combine with pottery.

44 In the days of those kings the ^aGod of heaven will ^bset up a ^ckingdom which will never be destroyed, and that kingdom will not be ¹left for another people; it will ^dcrush and put an end to all these kingdoms, but it will itself endure forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that a ^astone was cut out of the mountain without hands and that it crushed the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold, the ^bgreat God has made known to the king what ^cwill take place ¹in the future; so the dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”

46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face and did ^ahomage to Daniel, and gave orders to present to him an offering and ^1bfragrant incense. 47 The king answered Daniel and said, “Surely ^ayour God is a ^bGod of gods and a Lord of kings and a ^crevealer of mysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery.” 48 Then the king ^1apromoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts, and he made him ruler over the whole ^bprovince of Babylon and chief ²prefect over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 And Daniel made request of the king, and he ^aappointed ^bShadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego over the administration of the province of Babylon, while Daniel was at the king’s ^1ccourt.
