^aNow it happened that ¹Jesus was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath, and His disciples ^bwere picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what ^ais not lawful on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus, answering them, said, “Have you not even read ^awhat David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the ¹consecrated bread, which ^ais not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” 5 And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

6 ^aOn another Sabbath He entered ^bthe synagogue and taught; and a man was there ¹whose right hand was withered. 7 Now the scribes and the Pharisees ^awere watching Him ¹closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse Him. 8 But He ^aknew ¹what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and ²come forward!” And he got up and ³came forward. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after ^alooking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so; and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with senseless rage, and began discussing together what they might do to Jesus.

12 Now it was ¹at this time that He went off to ^athe mountain to ^bpray, and He spent the whole night in prayer with God. 13 And when day came, ^aHe called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as ^bapostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; and ¹James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and ^aMatthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17 And then Jesus ^acame down with them and stood on a level place; and there was ^ba large crowd of His disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the coastal region of ^cTyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being cured. 19 And all the ¹people were trying to ^atouch Him, because ^bpower was coming from Him and healing them all.

20 And He raised His eyes toward His disciples and began saying, “^aBlessed are ¹you who are poor, for ^byours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are ¹you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are ²you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 ^aBlessed are you when the people hate you, and when they ^1bexclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and ^ajump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to ¹treat the prophets ^bthe same way. 24 But woe to ^ayou who are rich, for ^byou are receiving your comfort in full. 25 Woe to you who ¹are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to ¹treat the ^afalse prophets the same way.

27 “But I say to you who hear, ^alove your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, ^apray for those who are abusive to you. 29 ^aWhoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your ¹cloak, do not withhold your ²tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 ^1aTreat people the same way you want them to ²treat you. 32 ^aIf you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 ^aAnd if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But ^alove your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be ^bsons of ^cthe Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people. 36 ¹Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

37 “^aDo not ¹judge, and you will not be judged; and do not ²condemn, and you will not be condemned; ^3bpardon, and you will be pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will ¹pour ^ainto your lap a ^bgood measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”

39 Now He also spoke a parable to them: “^aA person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 ^aA ¹student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the ¹speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the ¹speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the ²speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 ^aFor there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, ¹on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. 44 ^aFor each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 ^aThe good person out of the good ¹treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; ^bfor his mouth speaks from ²that which fills his heart.

46 “Now ^awhy do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 ^aEveryone who comes to Me and hears My words and ¹acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who ¹dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

12 Now at this time Jesus went off to ^athe mountain to ^bpray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 When day came, ^aHe called His disciples and selected twelve of them, whom He also named ^1bapostles (special messengers, personally chosen representatives) : Matt 10:2-4; Mark 3:16-19 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and his brother Andrew; and the brothers ¹James and John; and Philip, and Bartholomew also called Nathanael; 15 and ^aMatthew (Levi, the tax collector) and Thomas; and ¹James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas also called Thaddaeus the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor to the Lord.

17 Then Jesus ^acame down with them and stood on a level place; and there was ^ba large crowd of His disciples, and a vast multitude of people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of ^cTyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to listen to Him and to be healed of their diseases. Even those who were troubled by unclean spirits (demons) were being healed. 19 All the people were trying to ^atouch Him, because healing ^bpower was coming from Him and healing them all.

20 And looking toward His disciples, He began ¹speaking: “^aBlessed spiritually prosperous, happy, to be admired are you who are poor in spirit, those devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant, for ^bthe kingdom of God is yours both now and forever. Matt 5:3-12 21 Blessed joyful, nourished by God’s goodness are you who hunger now for righteousness, actively seeking right standing with God, for you will be completely satisfied. Blessed forgiven, refreshed by God’s grace are you who weep now over your sins and repent, for you will laugh when the burden of sin is lifted. 22 ^aBlessed morally courageous and spiritually alive with life-joy in God’s goodness are you when people hate you, and ^bexclude you from their fellowship, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil because of your association with the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and ^aleap for joy, for your reward in heaven is great absolutely inexhaustible; for their fathers used to treat the prophets ^bin the same way. 24 But ¹woe (judgment is coming) to ^ayou who are rich and place your faith in possessions while remaining spiritually impoverished, for ^byou are already receiving your comfort in full and there is nothing left to be awarded to you. 25 Woe to you who are well-fed (gorged, satiated) now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now enjoying a life of self-indulgence, for you will mourn and weep and deeply long for God. 26 Woe to you when all the people speak well of you and praise you, for their fathers used to treat the ^afalse prophets in the same way.

27 “But I say to you who hear Me and pay attention to My words: ^1aLove that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for your enemies, make it a practice to do good to those who hate you, 28 bless and show kindness to those who curse you, ^apray for those who mistreat you. 29 ^aWhoever ¹strikes you on the cheek, offer him the other one also simply ignore insignificant insults or losses and do not bother to retaliate—maintain your dignity. Whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either. Matt 5:39-42 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. ¹Whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 ^aTreat others the same way you want them to treat you. 32 ^aIf you only love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 ^aIf you lend money to those from whom you expect to receive it back, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners expecting to receive back the same amount. 35 But ^alove that is, unselfishly seek the best or higher good for your enemies, and do good, and lend, ¹expecting nothing in return; for your reward will be great (rich, abundant) , and you will be ^bsons of ^cthe Most High; because He Himself is kind and gracious and good to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful (responsive, compassionate, tender) just as your heavenly Father is merciful.

37 “^1aDo not judge others self-righteously, and you will not be judged; do not condemn others when you are guilty and unrepentant, and you will not be condemned for your hypocrisy; ^bpardon others when they truly repent and change, and you will be pardoned when you truly repent and change. Matt 7:1-5 38 Give, and it will be given to you. ^aThey will pour into your lap a ^bgood measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over with no space left for more. For with the standard of measurement you use when you do good to others, it will be measured to you in return.”

39 He also told them a parable: “^aCan a blind man guide another blind man? Will they not both fall into a hole in the ground? 40 ^aA student is not superior to his teacher; but everyone, after he has been completely trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice or consider the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, allow me to take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite (play actor, pretender) , first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 ^aFor there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. Matt 7:16, 18 44 ^aFor each tree is known and identified by its own fruit. For figs are not picked from thorn bushes, nor is a cluster of grapes picked from a briar bush. 45 ^aThe intrinsically good man produces what is good and honorable and moral out of the good treasure stored in his heart; and the intrinsically evil man produces what is wicked and depraved out of the evil in his heart; ^bfor his mouth speaks from the overflow of his heart.

46 ^a“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not practice what I tell you? 47 ^aEveryone who comes to Me and listens to My words and obeys them, I will show you whom he is like: Matt 7:24-27 48 he is like a far-sighted, practical, and sensible man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and yet could not shake it, because it had been securely built and founded on the rock. 49 But the one who has merely heard and has not practiced what I say, is like a foolish man who built a house on the ground without any foundation, and the torrent burst against it; and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

20 And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say,

23 Be glad in that day and ^aleap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For ^btheir fathers were doing the same things to the prophets.

27 “But I say to you who hear, ^alove your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, ^apray for those who disparage you. 29 ^aWhoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your garment, do not withhold your ¹tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 And ^1atreat others the same way you want ²them to treat you. 32 ^aAnd if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?
