Job’s Life Seems Futile
1Is a person not aforced to labor on earth,And are his days not like the days of ba hired worker?2 “As a slave pants for the shade,And as a hired worker who eagerly waits for his wages,3 So I am allotted worthless months,And anights of trouble are apportioned to me.4 When I alie down, I say,When shall I arise?’But the night continues,And I am continually tossing until dawn.5 “My aflesh is clothed with maggots and a crust of dirt,My skin hardens and 1oozes.6 “My days are aswifter than a weaver’s shuttle,And they come to an end bwithout hope.
7 Remember that my life ais a mere breath; My eye will bnot see goodness again.8 “The aeye of him who sees me will no longer look at me;Your eyes will be on me, but bI will not exist.9 “When a acloud vanishes, it is gone;In the same way bone who goes down to 1cSheol does not come up.10 “He will not return to his house again,Nor will ahis place know about him anymore.
11 Therefore aI will not restrain my mouth;I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.12 “Am I the sea, or athe sea monster,That You set a guard over me?13 If I say, ‘aMy couch will comfort me,My bed will 1ease my complaint,’14 Then You frighten me with dreams,And terrify me by visions,15 So that my soul would choose suffocation,Death rather than my 1pains.16 “I 1awaste away; I will not live forever.Leave me alone, bfor my days are only a breath.17 aWhat is man that You exalt him,And that You 1are concerned about him,18 That aYou examine him every morningAnd put him to the test every moment?19 1aWill You never turn Your gaze away from me,Nor leave me alone until I swallow my spittle?20 aHave I sinned? What have I done to You,bWatcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your target,So that I am a burden to myself?21 Why then ado You not forgive my wrongdoingAnd take away my 1guilt?For now I will blie down in the dust; And You will search for me, cbut I will no longer exist.”
Job’s Life Seems Futile
“Is not man aforced to labor on earth? And are not his days like the days of a bhired man?2 “As a slave earnestly longs for the shade,And as a hired man eagerly awaits his wages,3 So am I allotted months of futility and suffering,And long anights of trouble and misery are appointed to me.4 “When I alie down I say,‘When shall I arise and the night be gone?’But the night continues,And I am continually tossing until the dawning of day.5 “My abody is clothed with worms and a crust of dust;My skin is hardened and broken and loathsome, and breaks out and runs.6 “My days are aswifter than a weaver’s shuttle,And are spent bwithout hope.
7 “Remember that my life ais but breath a puff of wind, a sigh;My eye bwill not see good again.8 “The aeye of him who sees me now will see me no more;Your eyes will be upon me, but bI will not be.9 “As a acloud vanishes and is gone,So bhe who goes down to cSheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) does not come up.10 “He will not return again to his house,Nor will ahis place know about him anymore.
11 “Therefore aI will not restrain my mouth;I will speak in the anguish of my spirit,I will complain in the bitterness of my soul O Lord.12 “Am I the sea, or athe sea monster,That You set a guard over me?13 “When I say, ‘aMy bed will comfort me,My couch will ease my complaint,’14 Then You frighten me with dreamsAnd terrify me through visions,15 So that I would choose suffocation,Death rather than my 1pain.16 “I awaste away and loathe my life; I will not live forever.Let me alone, bfor my days are but a breath futile and without substance.17 aWhat is man that You should magnify him and think him important? And that You are concerned about him? Ps 8:418 “And that aYou examine him every morningAnd try and test him every moment?19 aWill You never turn Your gaze away from me it plagues me,Nor let me alone until I swallow my spittle?20 “If aI have sinned, what harm have I done to You,O bWatcher of mankind? Why have You set me as a target for You,So that I am a burden to myself?21 “Why then ado You not pardon my transgressionAnd take away my sin and guilt? For now I will blie down in the dust; And You will seek me diligently, cbut I will not be.”
1Is not man aconscripted to labor on earth,And are not his days like the days of ba hired man?2 “As a slave who pants for the shade,And as a hired man who eagerly hopes for his wages,3 So am I apportioned months of worthlessness,And anights of trouble are appointed me.4 If I alie down I say,When shall I arise?’But the twilight continues,And I am saturated with tossing until dawn.5 “My aflesh is clothed with worms and a crust of dirt;My skin scabs over and flows out again.6 “My days are aswifter than a weaver’s shuttle,And come to an end bwithout hope.
7 Remember that my life ais but wind;My eye will bnot again see good.8 “The aeye of him who sees me will behold me no longer;Your eyes will be on me, but bI will not be.9 “A acloud vanishes, and it is gone,So bhe who goes down to cSheol does not come up.10 “He will not return again to his house,Nor will ahis place recognize him anymore.
11 Indeed aI will not hold back my mouth;I will speak in the distress of my spirit;I will muse on the bitterness of my soul.12 “Am I the sea or athe sea monster,That You set a guard over me?13 If I say, ‘aMy bed will comfort me;My couch will 1ease my bitter musing,’14 Then You frighten me with dreamsAnd terrify me by visions,15 So that my soul would choose suffocation,Death rather than my 1pains.16 “I have arejected everything; I will not live forever.Leave me alone, bfor my days are but a breath.17 aWhat is man that You magnify him,And that You set Your heart on him,18 That aYou 1examine him every morningAnd test him every moment?19 1aWill You never turn Your gaze away from me,Nor let me alone until I swallow my spit?20 aHave I sinned? What have I done to You,O bwatcher of men?Why have You set me as Your target,So that I am a burden to myself?21 Why then ado You not forgive my transgressionAnd take away my iniquity? For now I will blie down in the dust; And You will seek me earnestly, cbut I will not be.”
