5 For this reason I left you in ^aCrete, that you would set in order what remains and ^bappoint ^celders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, ^aif any man is above reproach, the ^bhusband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of ^cdissipation or ^drebellion. 7 For the ^1aoverseer must be above reproach as ^bGod’s steward, not ^cself-willed, not quick-tempered, not ^daddicted to wine, not pugnacious, ^enot fond of sordid gain, 8 but ^ahospitable, ^bloving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, 9 ^aholding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in ^bsound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.

10 ^aFor there are many ^brebellious men, ^cempty talkers and deceivers, especially ^dthose of the circumcision, 11 who must be silenced because they are upsetting ^awhole families, teaching ^bthings they should not teach ^cfor the sake of sordid gain. 12 One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “^aCretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this reason ^areprove them ^bseverely so that they may be ^csound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish ^amyths and ^bcommandments of men who ^cturn away from the truth. 15 ^aTo the pure, all things are pure; but ^bto those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their ^cmind and their conscience are defiled. 16 ^aThey profess to know God, but by their deeds they ^bdeny Him, being ^cdetestable and ^ddisobedient and ^eworthless ^ffor any good deed.

Paul, ^aa bond-servant of God and an ^bapostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God’s ^cchosen ones and to lead and encourage them to recognize and pursue ^dthe knowledge of the truth which ^eleads to godliness, 2 based on ^athe hope and divine guarantee of eternal life, the life which God, ^bwho is ever truthful and without deceit, ^cpromised ^dbefore the ages of time began, 3 and ^aat the appointed time has made known His word and revealed it as His message, through ^bpreaching, which was ^centrusted to me ^daccording to the command of ^eGod our Savior—

5 For this reason I left you behind in ^aCrete, so that you would set right what remains unfinished, and ^bappoint ^1celders in every city as I directed you, 6 namely, ^aa man of unquestionable integrity, the ^bhusband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of ^cbeing immoral or ^drebellious. 7 For the ^1aoverseer, as ^bGod’s steward, must be blameless, not ^cself-willed, not quick-tempered, not ^daddicted to wine, not violent, ^enot greedy for dishonest gain but financially ethical. 8 And he must be ^ahospitable to believers, as well as strangers, a ^blover of what is good, sensible (upright) , fair, devout, self-disciplined above reproach—whether in public or in private. 9 ^aHe must hold firmly to the trustworthy word of God as it was taught to him, so that he will be able both to give accurate instruction in ^bsound reliable, error-free doctrine and to refute those who contradict it by explaining their error.

10 ^aFor there are many ^brebellious men who are ^cempty talkers just windbags and deceivers; especially ^dthose of the circumcision those Jews who insist that Gentile believers must be circumcised and keep the Law in order to be saved. 11 They must be silenced, because they are upsetting whole ^afamilies by teaching ^bthings they should not teach ^cfor the purpose of dishonest financial gain. 12 One of them Epimenides, a Cretan, a ¹prophet of their own, said, “^aCretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This description is true. So ^arebuke them ^bsharply so that they will be ^csound in the faith and free from doctrinal error, 14 not paying attention to Jewish ^amyths and the ^bcommandments and rules of men who ^cturn their backs on the truth. 15 ^aTo the pure, all things are pure; but ^bto the corrupt and unbelieving, nothing is pure; both their ^cmind and their conscience are corrupted. 16 ^aThey profess to know God to recognize and be acquainted with Him, but by their actions they ^bdeny and disown Him. They are ^cdetestable and ^ddisobedient and ^eworthless ^ffor good work of any kind.
