Then Elisha said, “Listen to the word of Yahweh; thus says Yahweh, ‘^aAbout this time tomorrow a ¹seah of fine flour will be sold for a ²shekel, and two ³seahs of barley for a ⁴shekel, in the gate of Samaria.’” 2 ^aAnd the royal officer on whose hand the king was leaning answered the man of God and said, “Behold, ^bif Yahweh should make windows in heaven, could this thing be?” Then he said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat ¹of it.”

3 Now there were four ^aleprous men at the entrance of the gate; and they said to one another, “Why do we sit here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We will enter the city,’ then the famine is in the city and we will die there; and if we sit here, we die also. So now come, and let us ¹go over to ^athe camp of the Arameans. If they spare us, we will live; and if they put us to death, we will die.” 5 So they arose at twilight to go to the camp of the Arameans. Then they came to the outskirts of the camp of the Arameans, but behold, there was no one there. 6 Now ^athe Lord had caused the camp of the Arameans to hear a sound of chariots and a sound of horses, even the sound of a great military force, so that they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us ^bthe kings of the Hittites and ^cthe kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.” 7 Therefore they ^aarose and fled in the twilight, and forsook their tents and their horses and their donkeys, even the camp just as it was, and fled for their life. 8 So these lepers came to the outskirts of the camp and entered one tent and ate and drank. Then they ^acarried from there silver and gold and clothes, and they went and hid them; and they returned and entered another tent and carried from there also and went and hid them.

9 Then they said to one another, “We are not doing right. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent; if we wait until morning light, punishment will ¹overtake us. So now, come, let us go and tell the king’s household.” 10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and they told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Arameans, and behold, there was no one there, nor the voice of man, only the horses tied and the donkeys tied, and the tents just as they were.” 11 And the gatekeepers called and told it within the king’s household. 12 Then the king arose in the night and said to his servants, “I will now tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that ^awe are hungry; therefore they have gone from the camp ^bto hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and get into the city.’” 13 And one of his servants answered and said, “Please, let some men take five of the remaining horses, which remain ¹in the city. Behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who remain in it; behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who have already come to an end, so let us send and see.” 14 They took therefore two chariots with horses, and the king sent after the camp of the Arameans, saying, “Go and see.”

15 Then they went after them to the Jordan, and behold, all the way was full of clothes and equipment which the Arameans had thrown away in their haste. Then the messengers returned and told the king.

16 So the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. Then a ¹seah of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two ²seahs of barley for a shekel, ^aaccording to the word of Yahweh. 17 Now the king appointed ^athe royal officer on whose hand he leaned ¹to have charge of the gate; but the people trampled on him at the gate, and he died just as the man of God had spoken, ^bwho spoke when the king came down to him. 18 So it happened just as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “^aTwo ¹seahs of barley for a shekel and a ²seah of fine flour for a shekel will be sold tomorrow about this time at the gate of Samaria.” 19 And the royal officer had answered the man of God and said, “Now behold, ^aif Yahweh should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?” And he had said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat ¹of it.” 20 And so it happened to him, for the people trampled on him at the gate and he died.

If they spare us, we will live; and if they kill us, then we will die.” 5 So they got up at twilight to go to the camp of the Arameans; when they came to the outskirts of the camp of the Arameans, behold, there was no one there. 6 For ^athe Lord had made the army of the Arameans hear a sound of chariots, a sound of horses, that is, the sound of a great army; and they said to one another, “Behold, the king of Israel has hired ^bthe kings of the Hittites and ^cthe kings of the Egyptians against us, to ¹attack us!” 7 So they ^agot up and fled at twilight, and abandoned their tents, their horses, and their donkeys—indeed the camp itself, just as it was; and they fled for their lives. 8 When these men with leprosy came to the outskirts of the camp, they entered one tent and ate and drank, and ^acarried from there silver, gold, and clothes, and they went and hid them; then they returned and entered another tent, and carried valuables from there also, and went and hid them.

9 Then they said to one another, “We are not doing the right thing. This day is a day of good news, but we are keeping silent about it; if we wait until the morning light, punishment will ¹overtake us. Now then come, let’s go and inform the king’s household.” 10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city, and told them, saying, “We came to the camp of the Arameans, and behold, there was no one there, nor a human voice; only the horses tied and the donkeys tied, and the tents just as they were.” 11 And the gatekeepers called and announced it inside the king’s house. 12 Then the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “I will now tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that ^awe are hungry; so they have left the camp ^bto hide themselves in the field, saying, ‘When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and get into the city.’” 13 One of his servants responded and said, “Please, have some men take five of the horses that remain, which are left ¹in the city. Behold, they will be in any case like all the multitude of Israel who are left in it; behold, they will be like all the multitude of Israel who have already perished, so let us send them and see.” 14 Therefore they took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the army of the Arameans, saying, “Go and see.”

Then a ¹measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel, and two ²measures of barley for a shekel, ^ain accordance with the word of the LORD. 17 Now the king appointed ^athe royal officer on whose hand he leaned ¹to be in charge of the gate; but the people trampled on him at the gate, and he died, just as the man of God had said, ^bwho spoke when the king came down to him. 18 So it happened just as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “^aTwo ¹measures of barley for a shekel and a ²measure of fine flour for a shekel, will be sold about this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria.” 19 At that time the royal officer had responded to the man of God and said, “Now even if ^athe LORD were to make windows in heaven, could such a thing as this happen?” And he had said, “Behold, you are going to see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat ¹any of it.” 20 And this is what happened to him, for the people trampled on him at the gate and he died.

Thus says the LORD, ‘^aTomorrow about this time a ¹measure of finely-milled flour will sell for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.’” 2 Then ^athe royal officer on whose arm the king leaned answered the man of God and said, “^bIf the LORD should make windows in heaven for the rain, could this thing take place?” Elisha said, “Behold, you will see it with your own eyes, but because you doubt you will not eat of it.”

3 Now four men who were ^1alepers were at the entrance of the city’s gate; and they said to one another, “Why should we sit here until we die? 4 If we say, ‘We will enter the city’—then the famine is in the city and we will die there; and if we sit still here, we will also die. So now come, let us go over to ^athe camp of the Arameans (Syrians) . If they let us live, we will live; and if they kill us, we will only die.” 5 So they got up at twilight to go to the Aramean camp. But when they came to the edge of the camp, there was no one there. 6 For ^athe LORD had caused the Aramean army to hear the sound of chariots, and the sound of horses, the sound of a great army. They had said to one another, “The king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the ^bHittites, and the kings of the ^cEgyptians, to come and fight against us.” 7 So the Arameans ^aset out and fled during the twilight, and left their tents, horses, and donkeys, even left the camp just as it was, and fled for their lives. 8 When these lepers came to the edge of the camp, they went into one tent and ate and drank, and ^acarried away from there silver, gold, and clothing, and went and hid them. Then they went back and entered another tent and carried some valuable things from there also, and went and hid them.

9 Then they said one to another, “We are not doing the right thing. This is a day of good news, yet we are keeping silent. If we wait until the morning light, some punishment for not reporting this now will come on us. So now come, let us go and tell the king’s household.” 10 So they came and called to the gatekeepers of the city. They told them, “We went to the camp of the Arameans (Syrians) , and behold, there was no one there, nor the sound of man there—only the horses and donkeys tied up, and the tents had been left just as they were.” 11 Then the gatekeepers called out and it was reported to the king’s household inside the city. 12 Then the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know that ^awe are hungry; so they have left the camp ^bto hide themselves in the open country, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we shall take them alive and get into the city.’” 13 One of his servants replied, “Please let some men take five of the horses which remain inside the city. Consider this: if they are caught then at worst they will be like all the people of Israel who are left in the city; even if they are killed then they will be like all the people of Israel who have already died. So let us send them and see what happens.” 14 So they took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army, saying, “Go and see.”

15 They went after them to the Jordan, and all the road was entirely littered with clothing and equipment which the Arameans (Syrians) had thrown away when they hurriedly fled. And the messengers returned and told the king.

16 Then the people of Israel went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. So goods were so plentiful that a measure of finely-milled flour was sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, ^ain accordance with the word of the LORD as spoken through Elisha. 2+@Kin 7:1 17 Now the king had appointed ^athe royal officer on whose arm he leaned to be in charge of the city gate; and the starving people trampled him at the gate as they struggled to get through for food, and he died, just as the man of God had ^bforetold when the king came down to him. 18 It happened just as Elisha the man of God had spoken to the king, saying, “^aTwo measures of barley will be sold for a shekel and a measure of finely-milled flour for a shekel tomorrow about this time at the gate of Samaria.” 19 The royal officer had answered the man of God and said, “^aNow behold, even if the LORD should make windows in heaven, could such a thing happen?” And Elisha had answered, “You will see it with your own eyes, but because of your doubt you will not eat it.” 2+@Kin 7:2 20 And so it happened to him; for the people trampled him at the gate, and he died.
