“^aThese things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from ^bstumbling. 2 They will ^aput you out of the synagogue, but ^ban hour is coming for everyone ^cwho kills you to think that he is offering service to God. 3 These things they will do ^abecause they did not know the Father or Me. 4 But these things I have spoken to you, ^aso that when their hour comes, you ¹may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you ^bat the beginning, because I was with you.

5 “But now ^aI am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘^bWhere are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, ^asorrow has filled your heart. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the ^1aAdvocate will not come to you; but if I go, ^bI will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, ^abecause they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning ^arighteousness, because ^bI go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 ^aand concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I still have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 But when He, ^athe Spirit of truth, comes, He will ^bguide you into all the truth; for He will not speak from Himself, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will ^aglorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 ^aAll things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you.

16 “^aA little while, and ^byou will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and ^cyou will see Me.” 17 Some of His disciples then said to one another, “What is this He is telling us, ‘^aA little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because ^bI go to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 ^aJesus knew that they were wishing to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, that ^ayou will cry and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but ^byour sorrow will be turned into joy. 21 ^aWhenever a woman is in labor she has sorrow, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the suffering because of the joy that a ¹child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore ^ayou too have sorrow now; but ^bI will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.

23 ^aAnd on that day ^byou will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^cif you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 ^aUntil now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your ^bjoy may be made complete.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in ^afigures of speech; ^ban hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you openly of the Father. 26 ^aOn that day ^byou will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for ^athe Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and ^bhave believed that ^cI came forth from the Father. 28 ^aI came forth from the Father and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again and ^bgoing to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “Behold, now You are speaking openly and are not ¹using ^aa figure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; by this we ^abelieve that You ^bcame from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, ^aan hour is coming, and has already come, for ^byou to be scattered, each to ^chis own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet ^dI am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you, so that ^ain Me you may have peace. ^bIn the world you have tribulation, but ^ctake courage; ^dI have overcome the world.”

5 “But now ^aI am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘^bWhere are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, ^agrief has filled your heart. 7 But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the ^1aHelper will not come to you; but if I go, ^bI will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: 9 regarding sin, ^abecause they do not believe in Me; 10 and regarding ^arighteousness, because ^bI am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; 11 ^aand regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. 13 But when He, ^athe Spirit of truth, comes, He will ^bguide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. 14 He will ^aglorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 ^aAll things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.

16 “^aA little while, and ^byou no longer are going to see Me; and again a little while, and ^cyou will see Me.” 17 So some of His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is telling us, ‘^aA little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because ^bI am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 ^aJesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 Truly, truly I say to you that ^ayou will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but ^byour grief will be turned into joy! 21 ^aWhenever a woman is in labor she has ¹pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a ²child has been born into the world. 22 Therefore ^ayou too have grief now; but ^bI will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

23 And ^aon that day ^byou will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly I say to you, ^cif you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. 24 ^aUntil now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your ^bjoy may be made full.

25 “These things I have spoken to you in ^afigures of speech; ^ban hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 ^aOn that day ^byou will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; 27 for ^athe Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and ^bhave believed that ^cI came forth from the Father. 28 ^aI came forth from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and ^bgoing to the Father.”

29 His disciples *said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and are not ¹using any ^afigure of speech. 30 Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we ^abelieve that You ^bcame forth from God.” 31 Jesus replied to them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, ^aan hour is coming, and has already come, for ^byou to be scattered, each to ^chis own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet ^dI am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 These things I have spoken to you so that ^ain Me you may have peace. ^bIn the world you have tribulation, but ^ctake courage; ^dI have overcome the world.”

“^aI have told you these things so that you will not ^bstumble or be caught off guard and fall away. 2 They will ^aput you out of the synagogues and make you outcasts. And ^ba time is coming when ^cwhoever kills you will think that he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things ^abecause they have not known the Father or Me. 4 I have told you these things now, ^aso that when their time comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not say these things to you ^bat the beginning, because I was with you.

5 “But now ^aI am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘^bWhere are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, ^asorrow has filled your hearts and taken complete possession of them. 7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the ^1aHelper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, ^bI will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you to be in close fellowship with you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world about the guilt of sin and the need for a Savior, and about righteousness, and about judgment: 9 about sin and the true nature of it, ^abecause they do not believe in Me and My message; 10 about ^arighteousness personal integrity and godly character, because ^bI am going to My Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 ^aabout judgment the certainty of it, because the ruler of this world (Satan) has been judged and condemned.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear to hear them now. 13 But when He, ^athe Spirit of Truth, comes, He will ^bguide you into all the truth full and complete truth. For He will not speak on His own initiative, but He will speak whatever He hears from the Father—the message regarding the Son, and He will disclose to you what is to come in the future. 14 He will ^aglorify and honor Me, because He (the Holy Spirit) will take from what is Mine and will disclose it to you. 15 ^aAll things that the Father has are Mine. Because of this I said that He the Spirit will take from what is Mine and will reveal it to you.

16 “^aA little while, and ^byou will no longer see Me; and again a little while, and ^cyou will see Me.” 17 Some of His disciples said to one another, “What does He mean when He tells us, ‘^aA little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘^bbecause I am going to My Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does He mean when He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” 19 ^aJesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, so He said to them, “Are you wondering among yourselves about what I meant when I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? 20 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, that ^ayou will weep and grieve in great mourning, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^byour sorrow will be turned into joy. 21 ^aA woman, when she is in labor, has pain because her time to give birth has come; but when she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of her joy that a child has come into the world. 22 So for now ^ayou are in grief; but ^bI will see you again, and then your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away from you your great joy.

23 ^aIn that day ^byou will not need to ask Me about anything. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, ^cwhatever you ask the Father in My name as My representative, He will give you. 24 ^aUntil now you have not asked the Father for anything in My name; but now ask and keep on asking and you will receive, so that your ^bjoy may be full and complete.

25 “I have told you these things in ^afigurative language (veiled language, proverbs) ; ^bthe hour is now coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 ^aIn that day ^byou will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf because it will be unnecessary; 27 for ^athe Father Himself tenderly loves you, because you have loved Me and ^bhave believed that ^cI came from the Father. 28 ^aI came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and ^bgoing to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now You are speaking plainly to us and not in ^afigures of speech! 30 Now we know that You know all things, and have no need for anyone to question You; because of this we ^abelieve without any doubt that you ^bcame from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now at last believe? 32 Take careful notice: ^aan hour is coming, and has arrived, when ^byou will all be scattered, each to ^chis own home, leaving Me alone; and yet ^dI am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 I have told you these things, so that ^ain Me you may have perfect peace. ^bIn the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but ^cbe courageous be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy; ^dI have overcome the world.” My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.
