Then ^aNadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective ^bfirepans and put fire in them. Then they placed incense on it and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which He had not commanded them. 2 ^aAnd fire came out from the presence of Yahweh and consumed them, and they died before Yahweh. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “It is what Yahweh spoke, saying,‘By those who ^acome near Me I ^1bwill be treated as holy,And before all the people I will ^cbe glorified.’”So Aaron kept silent.

4 Then Moses called to ^aMishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come near, carry your ¹relatives away from the front of the sanctuary to the outside of the camp.” 5 So they came near and carried them still in their ^atunics to the outside of the camp, as Moses had said. 6 Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “^aDo not ¹uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, so that you will not die and that He will not ^bbecome wrathful against all the congregation. But your ²relatives, the whole house of Israel, shall weep over the burning which Yahweh has ³brought about. 7 You shall not even go out from the doorway of the tent of meeting, lest you die; for ^athe anointing oil of Yahweh is upon you.” So they did according to the word of Moses.

8 Yahweh then spoke to Aaron, saying, 9 “^aDo not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die—it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations— 10 and ^aso as to separate between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean, 11 and ^aso as to instruct the sons of Israel in all the statutes which Yahweh has spoken to them through Moses.”

12 Then Moses spoke to Aaron and to his remaining sons, ^aEleazar and Ithamar, “^bTake the remaining grain offering from the offerings to Yahweh by fire and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 And you shall eat it in a holy place because it is a statute for you and a statute for your sons taken out of the offerings of Yahweh by fire; for thus I have been commanded. 14 ^aThe breast of the wave offering, however, and the thigh of the ¹contribution offering you may eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for they have been given as a statute for you and a statute for your sons taken out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the sons of Israel. 15 ^aThe thigh contributed by ¹raising up and the breast offered by waving they shall bring along with the offerings by fire of the portions of fat, to wave as a wave offering before Yahweh; so it shall be a perpetual statute for you and your sons with you, just as Yahweh has commanded.”

16 But Moses searched carefully for the ^agoat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up! So he was angry with Aaron’s remaining sons Eleazar and Ithamar, saying, 17 “Why ^adid you not eat the sin offering at the holy place? For it is most holy, and ¹He gave it to you to bear away ^bthe guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yahweh. 18 Behold, ^asince its blood had not been brought inside, into the sanctuary, you should certainly have ^beaten it in the sanctuary, just as I commanded.” 19 But Aaron spoke to Moses, “Behold, this very day they ^abrought near their sin offering and their burnt offering before Yahweh. Then things like these happened to me. So if I had eaten a sin offering today, would it have been good in the sight of Yahweh?” 20 So Moses heard this, and it was good in his sight.

But your ²kinsmen, the entire house of Israel, shall weep for the burning which the LORD has ³brought about. 7 You shall not even go out from the doorway of the tent of meeting, or you will die; for ^athe LORD’S anointing oil is upon you.” So they did according to the word of Moses.

12 Then Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his surviving sons, ^aEleazar and Ithamar, “^bTake the grain offering that is left over from the LORD’S offerings by fire and eat it as unleavened bread beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your allotted portion and your sons’ allotted portion from the LORD’S offerings by fire; for so I have been commanded. 14 ^aThe breast of the wave offering, however, and the thigh of the offering you may eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for they have been given as your allotted portion and your sons’ allotted portion from the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the sons of Israel. 15 They shall bring ^athe thigh offered by lifting up and the breast offered by waving, along with the offerings by fire of the portions of fat, to present as a wave offering before the LORD; so it shall be a thing perpetually due you and your sons with you, just as the LORD has commanded.”

For it is most holy, and ²He gave it to you to take away ^bthe guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD. 18 Behold, ^asince its blood had not been brought inside, into the sanctuary, you certainly should have ^beaten it in the sanctuary, just as I commanded!” 19 But Aaron said to Moses, “Behold, this very day they ^apresented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. When things like these happened to me, if I had eaten a sin offering today, would it have been good in the sight of the LORD?” 20 When Moses heard that, it was good in his sight.

Now ^aNadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective ceremonial ^bcensers, put fire in them, placed incense on it and offered ¹strange (unauthorized, unacceptable) fire before the LORD, an act which He had not commanded them to do. 2 ^aAnd fire came out from the presence of the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD said:‘I ^awill be treated as holy by those who ^bapproach Me,And before all the people I will ^cbe honored.’”So Aaron, therefore, said nothing.

4 Moses called ^aMishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel who was Aaron’s uncle, and said to them, “Come here, carry your relatives away from the front of the sanctuary and take them outside the camp.” 5 So they came forward and carried them, still in their ^aundertunics, outside the camp, as Moses had said. 6 Then Moses said to Aaron and to his younger sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “^aDo not ¹uncover your heads nor let your hair hang loose nor tear your clothes as expressions of mourning, so that you will not die also and so that He will not ^bexpress His wrath and anger toward all the congregation. But your relatives, the whole house of Israel, may mourn the burning which the LORD has brought about. 7 You shall not even go out of the doorway of the Tent of Meeting, or you will die; for ^athe LORD’S anointing oil is upon you.” So they did everything according to the word of Moses.

8 Then the LORD spoke to Aaron, saying, 9 “^1aDo not drink wine or intoxicating drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the Tent of Meeting, so that you will not die—it is a permanent statute throughout your generations— 10 and to ^amake a distinction and recognize a difference between the holy (sacred) and the common (profane) , and between the ceremonially unclean and the clean; Ezek 44:23 11 and you are ^ato teach the Israelites all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them ¹through Moses.”

12 Then Moses said to Aaron, and to his surviving sons, ^aEleazar and Ithamar, “^bTake the grain offering that is left over from the offerings by fire to the LORD, and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion and your sons’ portion, from the offerings by fire to the LORD; for so I have been commanded. 14 But ^athe breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the heave offering you may eat in a clean place, you and your sons and daughters with you; for the breast and the thigh are your portion and your sons’ portion, given out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the Israelites. 15 ^aThey shall bring the thigh presented by lifting up and the breast presented by waving, along with the offerings by fire of the fat, to present as a wave offering before the LORD. This shall be yours and your sons’ with you, as your perpetual portion, just as the LORD has commanded.”

16 But Moses diligently tried to find the ^agoat that had been offered as the sin offering, and discovered that it had been burned up as waste, not eaten! So he was angry with Aaron’s surviving sons Eleazar and Ithamar, saying, 17 “Why ^adid you not eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy; and God gave it to you to remove ^bthe guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD. 18 Behold, ^aits blood was not brought into the Holy Place; you certainly should have ^beaten the goat in the sanctuary, just as I commanded.” 19 Then Aaron said to Moses, “This very day they have obediently ^apresented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD, but such terrible things as these have happened to me and to them; if I and my sons had eaten a sin offering today would it have been acceptable and pleasing in the sight of the LORD?” Hos 9:4 20 When Moses heard that, he was satisfied.
