Now it happened that after a while, in the time of the wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife ^awith a young goat and said, “I will go in to my wife in her room.” But her father did not let him enter. 2 And her father said, “I really thought that you hated her intensely; so I ^agave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister better than she? Please let her be yours ¹instead.” 3 Samson then said to them, “This time I shall be innocent in regard to the Philistines when I do them harm.” 4 So Samson went and caught 300 foxes and took torches and turned the foxes tail to tail and put one torch in the middle between two tails. 5 Then he set fire to the torches and sent ¹the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines. So he caused both the shocks and the standing grain, along with the vineyards and groves, to burn. 6 Then the Philistines said, “Who did this?” And they said, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because ¹he took his wife and gave her to his companion.” So the Philistines came up and ^aburned her and her father with fire. 7 Then Samson said to them, “If you act like this, then I will surely take revenge on you, but after that I will cease.” 8 And he struck them ¹ruthlessly with a great slaughter; and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

9 Then the Philistines went up and camped in Judah and spread out in Lehi. 10 So the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” And they said, “We have come up to bind Samson in order to do to him as he did to us.” 11 Then 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Do you not know ^athat the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?” And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.” 12 And they said to him, “We have come down to bind you so that we may give you into the hand of the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you yourselves will not ¹kill me.” 13 So they said to ¹him, “No, but we will bind you fast and give you into their hands; yet surely we will not put you to death.” Then they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock.

14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him. And ^athe Spirit of Yahweh ¹came upon him mightily so that the ropes that were on his arms were as flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds ²dropped from his hands. 15 And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he sent forth his hand and took it and struck down ^a1,000 men with it. 16 Then Samson said,“With the jawbone of a donkey,¹Heaps upon heaps,With the jawbone of a donkeyI have struck down 1,000 men.” 17 Now it happened that when he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone from his hand; and he named that place ¹Ramath-lehi. 18 Then he became very thirsty, and he ^acalled to Yahweh and said, “You have given this great salvation by the hand of Your slave, but now ¹shall I die of thirst ²and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 So God split the hollow place that is in Lehi and water came out of it. Then he drank, ^aand his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore he named it ¹En-hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day. 20 And ^ahe judged Israel twenty years in ^bthe days of the Philistines.

Is her younger sister not more beautiful than she? Please take her as your wife instead.” 3 Samson said to them, “This time I shall be blameless in regard to the Philistines when I do them harm.” 4 So Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches and turning the foxes tail to tail, he put a torch between each pair of tails. 5 When he had set the torches ablaze, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and he burned up the heap of sheaves and the standing grain, along with the vineyards and olive groves. 6 Then the Philistines said, “Who did this?” And they were told, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he took Samson’s wife and gave her to his chief companion at the wedding feast.” So the Philistines came up and ^aburned her and her father with fire. 7 Samson said to them, “If this is the way you act, be certain that I will take revenge on you, and only after that I will stop.” 8 Then he struck them ¹without mercy, a great slaughter; and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.

9 Then the army of the Philistines came up and camped in the tribal territory of Judah, and overran Lehi (Jawbone) . 10 The men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?” And they answered, “We have come up to bind Samson, in order to do to him as he has done to us.” 11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Have you not known ^athat the Philistines are rulers over us? What is this that you have done to us?” He said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.” 12 They said to him, “We have come down to bind you, so that we may hand you over to the Philistines.” And Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not ¹kill me.” 13 So they said to him, “No, we will only bind you securely and place you into their hands; but we certainly will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock of Etam.

14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him. And ^athe Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, and the ropes on his arms were like flax (linen) that had been burned, and his bonds ¹dropped off his hands. 15 He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, so he reached out his hand and took it and killed ^aa thousand men with it. 16 Then Samson said,“With the jawbone of a donkey,Heaps upon heaps,With the jawbone of a donkeyI have struck down a thousand men.” 17 When he finished speaking, he threw the jawbone from his hand; and he named that place Ramath-lehi (hill of the jawbone) . 18 Then Samson was very thirsty, and he ^acalled out to the LORD and said, “You have given this great victory through the hand of Your servant, and now am I to die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised (pagans) ?” 19 So God split open the hollow place that was at Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, ^ahis spirit (strength) returned and he was revived. Therefore he named it En-hakkore (spring which is calling) , which is at Lehi to this day. 20 And Samson ^ajudged Israel in ^bthe days of occupation by the Philistines for twenty years. Judg 17:6
