Jonah’s Prayer

¹Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God ^afrom the stomach of the fish, 2 and he said,“I ^acalled out of my distress to Yahweh,And He answered me.I cried for help from the belly of ^bSheol;You heard my voice.

3 “For You had ^acast me into the deep,Into the heart of the seas,And the current surrounded me.All Your ^bbreakers and waves passed over me.4 “So I said, ‘I have been ^adriven away from ¹Your sight.Nevertheless I will look again ^btoward Your holy temple.’5 “^aWater encompassed me to my very soul.The great ^bdeep surrounded me,Weeds were wrapped around my head.6 “I ^awent down to the ¹base of the mountains.The earth with its ^bbars closed behind me forever,But You have ^cbrought up my life from ²the pit, O Yahweh my God.7 “While my soul was ^afainting within me,I ^bremembered Yahweh,And my ^cprayer came to You,To ^dYour holy temple.8 “Those who ^aregard worthless idolsForsake their lovingkindness,9 But as for me, I will ^asacrifice to YouWith the voice of thanksgiving.That which I have vowed I will ^bpay.^cSalvation belongs to Yahweh.”

10 Then Yahweh spoke to the ^afish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.

3 “For You had ^acast me into the deep,Into the heart of the seas,And the current ¹engulfed me.All Your ^bbreakers and billows passed over me.4 “So I said, ‘I have been ^aexpelled from ¹Your sight.Nevertheless I will look again ^btoward Your holy temple.’5 “^aWater encompassed me to the ¹point of death.The great ^bdeep ²engulfed me,Weeds were wrapped around my head.6 “I ^adescended to the roots of the mountains.The earth with its ^bbars was around me forever,But You have ^cbrought up my life from ¹the pit, O LORD my God.7 “While ¹I was ^afainting away,I ^bremembered the LORD,And my ^cprayer came to You,Into ^dYour holy temple.8 “Those who ^aregard ¹vain idolsForsake their faithfulness,9 But I will ^asacrifice to YouWith the voice of thanksgiving.That which I have vowed I will ^bpay.^cSalvation is from the LORD.”

10 Then the LORD commanded the ^afish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.

10 Then the LORD commanded the ^afish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.

3 “For You ^acast me into the deep,Into the deep heart of the seas,And the currents surrounded and engulfed me;All Your ^bbreakers and billowing waves passed over me. Ps 42:74 “Then I said, ‘I have been ^acast out of Your sight.Nevertheless I will look again ^btoward Your holy temple.’ Ps 31:225 “The ^awaters surrounded me, to the point of death.The ^bgreat deep engulfed me,Seaweed was wrapped around my head. Ps 69:1; Lam 3:546 “I ^adescended to the very roots of the mountains.The earth with its ^bbars closed behind me bolting me in forever,Yet You have ^cbrought up my life from the pit (death) , O LORD my God.7 “When my soul was ^afainting within me,I ^bremembered the LORD,And my ^cprayer came to You,Into ^dYour holy temple.8 “Those who ^aregard and follow worthless idols¹Turn away from their living source of mercy and lovingkindness.9 “But as for me, I will ^asacrifice to YouWith the voice of thanksgiving;I shall ^bpay that which I have vowed.^cSalvation is from the LORD!”

10 So the LORD commanded the ^afish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.
