And after these things Jesus ^awas walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because ^bthe Jews ^cwere seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the feast of the Jews, ^athe Feast of Booths, was near. 3 Therefore His ^abrothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your ^bdisciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4 For no one does anything in secret ¹when he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself publicly to the world.” 5 For not even His ^abrothers were believing in Him. 6 So Jesus *said to them, “^aMy time is not yet here, but your time is always here. 7 ^aThe world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I bear witness about it, that ^bits deeds are evil. 8 Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not ¹yet going up to this feast because ^aMy time has not yet been fulfilled.” 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.

10 But when His ^abrothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as in secret. 11 ^aSo the Jews ^bwere seeking Him at the feast and saying, “Where is He?” 12 And there was much grumbling among the crowds concerning Him; ^asome were saying, “He is a good man”; others were saying, “No, on the contrary, He leads the crowd astray.” 13 Yet no one was speaking openly about Him for ^afear of the Jews.

14 But when it was now the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and began to ^ateach. 15 ^aThe Jews then were marveling, saying, “How has this man ^bbecome learned, not having been educated?” 16 So Jesus answered them and said, “^aMy teaching is not Mine, but from Him who sent Me. 17 ^aIf anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God or I speak from Myself. 18 He who speaks from himself ^aseeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

19 “^aDid not Moses give you the Law? And yet none of you does the Law. Why do you ^bseek to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “^aYou have a demon! Who seeks to kill You?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did ^aone work, and you all marvel. 22 For this reason ^aMoses has given you circumcision (not because it is from Moses, but from ^bthe fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a man. 23 ^aIf a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made an entire man well on the Sabbath? 24 Do not ^ajudge according to appearance, but ¹judge with righteous judgment.”

25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is this not the man whom they are seeking to kill? 26 And look, He is speaking openly, and they are saying nothing to Him. ^aDo the rulers truly know that this is the ¹Christ? 27 However, ^awe know where this man is from; but whenever the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, ^ateaching and saying, “^bYou both know Me and know where I am from; and ^cI have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know. 29 ^aI know Him, because ^bI am from Him, and ^cHe sent Me.” 30 So they ^awere seeking to seize Him; ¹yet no man laid his hand on Him, because His ^bhour had not yet come. 31 But ^amany of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, “^bWhen the ¹Christ comes, will He do more ^2csigns than this man did?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd ¹whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent ^aofficers to ^bseize Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “^aFor a little while longer I am with you, then ^bI go to Him who sent Me. 34 ^aYou will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 ^aThe Jews then said to one another, “^bWhere does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? Is He intending to go to ^cthe Dispersion among ^dthe Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What is this statement that He said, ‘^aYou will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on ^athe last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “^1bIf anyone is thirsty, ²let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, ^aas the Scripture said, ‘From ¹his innermost being will flow rivers of ^bliving water.’” 39 But this He spoke ^aof the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were going to receive; for ^bthe Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet ^cglorified.

40 Some of the crowd therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is ^athe Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is the ¹Christ.” Still others were saying, “^aNo, for is the ²Christ going to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from ^athe seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So ^aa division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 ^aSome of them were wanting to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The ^aofficers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The ^aofficers answered, “^bNever has a man spoken like this!” 47 The Pharisees then answered them, “^aHave you also been led astray? 48 ^aHave any of ^bthe rulers or Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” 50 ^aNicodemus (he who came to Him before), being one of them, *said to them, 51 “^aDoes our Law judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing?” 52 They answered him, “^aAre you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 ¹[Everyone went to his home.

19 “^aDid not Moses give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why do you ^bseek to kill Me?” 20 The crowd answered, “^aYou have a demon! 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent ^aofficers to ^bseize Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “^aFor a little while longer I am with you, then ^bI go to Him who sent Me. 34 ^aYou will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 ^aThe Jews then said to one another, “^bWhere does this man intend to go that we will not find Him? He is not intending to go to ^cthe Dispersion among ^dthe Greeks, and teach the Greeks, is He? 36 What is this statement that He said, ‘^aYou will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on ^athe last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “^1bIf anyone is thirsty, ²let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, ^aas the Scripture said, ‘From ¹his innermost being will flow rivers of ^bliving water.’” 39 But this He spoke ^aof the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for ^bthe Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet ^cglorified.

40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This certainly is ^athe Prophet.” 41 Others were saying, “This is ¹the Christ.” Still others were saying, “^aSurely ²the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from ^athe descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?” 43 So ^aa division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 ^aSome of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The ^aofficers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The ^aofficers answered, “^bNever has a man spoken the way this man speaks.” 47 The Pharisees then answered them, “^aYou have not also been led astray, have you? 48 ^aNo one of ^bthe rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” 50 ^aNicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 “^aOur Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered him, “^aYou are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 ¹[Everyone went to his home.

45 The ^aofficers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The ^aofficers answered, “^bNever has a man spoken in this way!” 47 The Pharisees then replied to them, “^aYou have not been led astray too, have you? 48 ^aNot one of ^bthe rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? 49 But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!” 50 ^aNicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) *said to them, 51 “^aOur Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?” 52 They answered and said to him, “^aYou are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.” 53 ¹[[And everyone went to his home.

After this, Jesus ^awalked from place to place in Galilee, for He would not walk in Judea because ^bthe Jews ^cwere seeking to kill Him. 2 Now the Jewish ^1aFeast of Tabernacles (Booths) was approaching. 3 So His ^1abrothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea, so that Your ^bdisciples there may also see the works that You do. 4 No one does anything in secret when he wants to be known publicly. If You must do these things, show Yourself openly to the world and make Yourself known!” 5 For not even His ^abrothers believed in Him. 6 So Jesus said to them, “^aMy time has not yet come; but any time is right for you. 7 ^aThe world cannot hate you since you are part of it, but it does hate Me because I denounce it and testify that ^bits deeds are evil. 8 Go up to the feast yourselves. I am not going up to this feast because ^aMy time has not yet fully come.” 9 Having said these things to them, He stayed behind in Galilee.

10 But afterward, when His ^abrothers had gone up to the feast, He went up too, not publicly with a caravan, but quietly because He did not want to be noticed. 11 ^aSo the Jews ^bkept looking for Him at the feast and asking, “Where is He?” 12 There was a lot of whispered discussion and murmuring among the crowds about Him. ^aSome were saying, “He is a good man”; others said, “No, on the contrary, He misleads the people giving them false ideas.” 13 Yet no one was speaking out openly and freely about Him for ^afear of the leaders of the Jews.

14 When the feast was already half over, Jesus went up into the temple court and began to ^ateach. 15 ^aThen the Jews were perplexed. They said, “How ¹did this man ^bbecome learned so versed in the Scriptures and theology ²without formal training?” 16 Jesus answered them by saying, “^aMy teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me. 17 ^aIf anyone is willing to do His will, he will know whether the teaching is of God or whether I speak on My own accord and by My own authority. 18 He who speaks on his own accord ^aseeks glory and honor for himself. But He who seeks the glory and the honor of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness or deception in Him.

19 “^aDid not Moses give you the Law? And yet not one of you keeps the Law. Why do you ^bwant to kill Me for not keeping it?” 20 The crowd answered, “^aYou have a demon You are out of Your mind! Who wants to kill You?” 21 Jesus replied, “I did ^aone ¹work, and you are all astounded. John 5:1-9 22 For this reason ^aMoses has given you God’s law regarding circumcision (not that it originated with Moses, but with the ^bpatriarchs) and you circumcise a man even on the Sabbath. 23 ^aIf, to avoid breaking the Law of Moses, a man undergoes ¹circumcision on the Sabbath, why are you angry with Me for making a man’s whole body well on the Sabbath? 24 Do not ^ajudge by appearance superficially and arrogantly, but judge fairly and righteously.”

25 Then some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Is this not the Man they want to kill? 26 Look, He is speaking publicly, and they say nothing to Him! Is it possible that ^athe rulers really know that this is the Christ? 27 But ^awe know where this Man is from; whenever the Christ comes, no one will know where He is from.” 28 Then Jesus called out as He ^ataught in the temple, “^bYou know Me and know where I am from; and ^cI have not come on my own initiative as self-appointed, but He who sent Me is true, and Him you do not know. 29 ^aI know Him Myself because ^bI am from Him I came from His very presence and it was ^cHe personally who sent Me.” 30 So they ^awere eager to arrest Him; but no one laid a hand on Him, because His ^btime had not yet come. 31 But ^amany from the crowd believed in Him. And they kept saying, “^bWhen the Christ comes, will He do more ^csigns and exhibit more proofs than this Man?”

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd muttering these things under their breath about Him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent ^1aguards to ^barrest Him. 33 Therefore Jesus said, “^aFor a little while longer I am still with you, and then ^bI go to Him who sent Me. 34 ^aYou will look for Me, and will not be able to find Me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 Then ^athe Jews said among themselves, “^bWhere does this Man intend to go that we will not find Him? Does He intend to go to ^cthe Dispersion of Jews scattered and living among ^dthe Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What does this statement of His mean, ‘^aYou will look for Me, and will not be able to find Me; and where I am, you cannot come’?”

37 Now on ^athe last and most important day of the feast, Jesus stood and called out in a loud voice, “^bIf anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! 38 He who believes in Me who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Me, ^aas the Scripture has said, ‘From his innermost being will flow continually rivers of ^bliving water.’” Is 58:11; John 4:14 39 But He was speaking ^aof the Holy Spirit, whom those who believed in Him as Savior were to receive afterward. ^bThe Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet ^cglorified (raised to honor) .

40 Listening to these words, some of the people said, “This is certainly ^athe Prophet!” Deut 18:15, 18; John 1:21; 6:14; Acts 3:22 41 Others said, “This is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) !” But others said, “^aSurely the Christ is not going to come out of Galilee, is He? 42 Does the Scripture not say that the Christ comes from ^athe descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David lived?” Ps 89:3, 4; Mic 5:2 43 So the crowd was ^adivided because of Him. 44 ^aSome of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 Then the ^aguards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, “Why did you not bring Him here with you?” 46 The ^aguards replied, “^bNever at any time has a man talked the way this Man talks!” 47 Then the Pharisees said to them, “^aHave you also been deluded and swept off your feet? 48 ^aHas any of ^bthe rulers or Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this ignorant, contemptible crowd that does not know the Law is accursed and doomed!” 50 ^aNicodemus (the one who came to Jesus before and was one of them) asked, 51 “^aDoes our Law convict someone without first giving him a hearing and finding out what he is accused of doing?” 52 They responded, “^aAre you also from Galilee? Search and read the Scriptures, and see for yourself that no prophet comes from Galilee!” 53 [¹And everyone went to his own house.
