“Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess ^anations greater and mightier than you, great cities ^1bfortified to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘^aWho can stand before the sons of Anak?’ 3 So you shall know today that ^ait is Yahweh your God who is crossing over before you as ^ba consuming fire. He will destroy them, and He will subdue them before you, so that ^cyou may dispossess them and make them perish quickly, just as Yahweh has spoken to you.

4 “^aDo not say in your heart when Yahweh your God has driven them out before you, saying, ‘Because of my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is ^bbecause of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh is dispossessing them before you. 5 It is ^anot for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that Yahweh your God is dispossessing them before you, in order to confirm ^bthe ¹oath which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

6 “So you shall know it is not because of your righteousness that Yahweh your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are ^aa ¹stiff-necked people. 7 Remember, do not forget how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness; ^afrom the day that you went out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. 8 Even ^aat Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 9 When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which Yahweh had cut with you, then I remained on the mountain forty days and nights; ^aI neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 And Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone ^awritten by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which Yahweh had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 Now it happened ^aat the end of forty days and nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 ^aThen Yahweh said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have ^bquickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made a molten image for themselves.’ 13 ^aYahweh spoke further to me, saying, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, ¹they are a ^2bstiff-necked people. 14 ^aLet Me alone, that I may destroy them and ^bblot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and more numerous than they.’

15 “^aSo I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I saw that you had indeed sinned against Yahweh your God. You had made for yourselves a molten calf; you had turned aside quickly from the way which Yahweh had commanded you. 17 And I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my hands and shattered them before your eyes. 18 ^aAnd I fell down before Yahweh, ^bas at the first, forty days and nights; ^cI neither ate bread nor drank water ^dbecause of all your sin which you had committed in doing what was evil in the sight of Yahweh to provoke Him to anger. 19 For ^aI was afraid of the anger and the wrath with which Yahweh was provoked against you in order to destroy you, ^bbut Yahweh listened to me that time also. 20 And Yahweh was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 ^aNow I took your ¹sinful thing, the calf which you had made, and burned it with fire and crushed it, grinding it very small until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.

22 “Again at ^aTaberah and at ^bMassah and at ^cKibroth-hattaavah you provoked Yahweh to wrath. 23 When Yahweh sent you from ^aKadesh-barnea, saying, ‘^bGo up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the ¹command of Yahweh your God; ^cyou did not believe Him, and you did not listen to His voice. 24 ^aYou have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day I knew you.

25 “^aSo I fell down before Yahweh the forty days and the forty nights, which I ¹did because Yahweh had said He would destroy you. 26 ^aAnd I prayed to Yahweh and said, ‘O Lord Yahweh, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a strong hand. 27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stiff-neck of this people or at their wickedness or their sin, 28 lest the land from which You brought us say, “^aBecause Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land which He had ¹promised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to put them to death in the wilderness.” 29 Yet they are Your people, even ^aYour inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your ^bgreat power and Your outstretched arm.’

22 “Again at ^aTaberah and at ^bMassah and at ^cKibroth-hattaavah you provoked the LORD to wrath. 23 When the LORD sent you from ^aKadesh-barnea, saying, ‘^bGo up and possess the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the ¹command of the LORD your God; ^cyou neither believed Him nor listened to His voice. 24 ^aYou have been rebellious against the LORD from the day I knew you.

25 “^aSo I fell down before the LORD the forty days and nights, which I ¹did because the LORD had said He would destroy you. 26 ^aI prayed to the LORD and said, ‘O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness or their sin. 28 Otherwise the land from which You brought us may say, “^aBecause the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which He had ¹promised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to slay them in the wilderness.” 29 Yet they are Your people, even ^aYour inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your ^bgreat power and Your outstretched arm.’

“Hear, Israel! You are crossing the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess ^anations greater and mightier than you, cities that are great and ^bfortified to heaven, 2 a people who are great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘^aWho can stand against the sons of Anak?’ 3 So be aware today that ^ait is the LORD your God who is crossing over ahead of you as ^ba consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that ^cyou may drive them out and eliminate them quickly, just as the LORD has spoken to you.

4 “^aDo not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them away from ¹you, ‘Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to take possession of this land.’ Rather, it is ^bbecause of the ²wickedness of these nations that the LORD is dispossessing them before you. 5 It is ^anot because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to take possession of their land, ¹but it is because of the ²wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out from before you, and in order to confirm ^bthe ³oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

6 “Know, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are ^aa ¹stubborn people. 7 Remember, do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the wilderness; ^afrom the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD. 8 Even ^aat Horeb you provoked the LORD to anger, and the LORD was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 9 When I went up to the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I remained on the mountain for forty days and nights; ^aI neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 The LORD gave me the two tablets of stone ^awritten by the finger of God; and on them were all the words which the LORD had spoken with you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 It came about ^aat the end of forty days and nights that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 ^aThen the LORD said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, because your people, whom you brought out of Egypt, have behaved corruptly. They have ^bquickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them; they have made a cast metal image for themselves.’ 13 The ^aLORD also said to ¹me, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, it is a ^2bstubborn people. 14 ^aLeave Me alone, that I may destroy them and ^bwipe out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

15 “^aSo I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You had made for yourselves a cast metal image of a calf; you had quickly turned aside from the way that the LORD had commanded you. 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my two hands, and smashed them to pieces before your eyes! 18 ^aThen I fell down before the LORD ^blike the first time, for forty days and nights; ^cI neither ate bread nor drank water, ^dbecause of all your sin which you had committed by doing what was evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger. 19 For ^aI was afraid of the anger and the rage with which the LORD was angry with you so as to destroy you; ^bbut the LORD listened to me that time as well. 20 The LORD was also angry enough with Aaron to destroy him; so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 ^aAnd I took your ¹sinful thing which you had made, the calf, and burned it in the fire and crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain.

22 “Then at ^aTaberah, at ^bMassah, and at ^cKibroth-hattaavah you kept provoking the LORD to anger. 23 And when the LORD sent you from ^aKadesh-barnea, saying, ‘^bGo up and take possession of the land which I have given you,’ you rebelled against the ¹command of the LORD your God; ^cyou neither trusted Him nor listened to His voice. 24 ^aYou have been rebellious toward the LORD since the day I knew you.

25 “^aSo I fell down before the LORD for the forty days and nights, which I ¹did because the LORD said He would destroy you. 26 ^aAnd I prayed to the LORD and said, ‘Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand! 27 Remember Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not turn Your attention to the stubbornness of this people, or to their wickedness, or their sin. 28 Otherwise, the people of the land from which You brought us will say, “^aSince the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which He had ¹promised them, and since He hated them, He has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness!” 29 Yet they are Your people, and ^aYour inheritance, whom You brought out by Your ^bgreat power and Your outstretched arm.’

“Hear, O Israel! You are crossing the Jordan today to go in to dispossess ^anations greater and more powerful than you, great cities ^bfortified to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, sons of Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘^aWho can stand before the sons of Anak?’ 3 So know today with confident assurance that ^athe LORD your God is crossing the Jordan before you like ^ba devouring fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, and ^cyou shall drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the LORD has promised you.

4 “^aDo not say in your heart when the LORD your God has driven them out before you, ‘Because of my righteousness the LORD has brought me in to possess this land,’ but ^bbecause of the wickedness of these nations the LORD is dispossessing them before you. 5 It is ^anot for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations the LORD your God is driving them out before you, and to confirm ^bthe oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

6 “Know without any doubt, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are ^aa stiff-necked (stubborn, obstinate) people. 7 Remember with remorse and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness; ^afrom the day you left the land of Egypt until you arrived in this place, you have been rebellious against the LORD. 8 And ^aat Horeb (Sinai) you provoked the LORD to wrath, and the LORD was so angry with you that He would have destroyed you. 9 When I went up the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the LORD made with you, I remained on the mountain forty days and forty nights; ^aI did not eat food or drink water. 10 The LORD gave me the two tablets of stone ^awritten with the finger of God; and on them were written all the words which the LORD had spoken to you at the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 It came about ^aat the end of forty days and forty nights that the LORD gave me the two tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant. 12 ^aThen the LORD said to me, ‘Arise, go down from here quickly, for your people whom you brought from Egypt have acted corruptly. They have ^bquickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them; they have made (cast) a molten image for themselves.’ 13 Furthermore, the ^aLORD said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, they are ^bstiff-necked (stubborn, obstinate) people. 14 ^aLet Me alone, so that I may destroy them and ^bwipe out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’

15 “^aSo I turned and came down from the mountain while the mountain was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I saw that you had indeed sinned against the LORD your God. You had made for yourselves a molten ¹calf (idol) . You had turned aside quickly from the way which the LORD had commanded you. Ex 32:1-10 17 So I took hold of the two tablets and threw them from my two hands and smashed them before your very eyes! 18 Then, as before, ^aI fell down before the LORD ^bfor another forty days and forty nights; ^cI did not eat food or drink water, ^dbecause of all the sin you had committed by doing ¹what was evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke Him to anger. 19 For ^aI was afraid of the anger and ¹absolute fury which the LORD held against you, enough divine fury to destroy you, ^bbut the LORD listened to me that time also. 20 The LORD was very angry with Aaron, angry enough to destroy him, so I also prayed for Aaron at the same time. 21 ^aI took your sinful thing, the calf which you had made, and burned it in the fire and thoroughly crushed it, grinding the metal thoroughly until it was as fine as dust; and I threw its dust into the brook that came down from the mountain.

22 “At ^aTaberah also and at ^bMassah and at ^cKibroth-hattaavah you provoked the LORD to wrath. 23 And when the LORD sent you from ^aKadesh-barnea, saying, ‘^bGo up and take possession of the land which I have given you,’ then you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God, and ^cyou did not believe and rely on Him, nor did you obey His voice. 24 ^aYou have been rebellious against the LORD from the first day that I knew you.

25 “^aSo I fell down and lay face down before the LORD forty days and nights because the LORD had said He would destroy you. 26 Then ^aI prayed to the LORD and said, ‘O Lord GOD, do not destroy Your people, even Your inheritance, whom You have redeemed through Your greatness, whom You have brought from Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember with compassion Your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; do not look at the stubbornness of this people or at their wickedness or at their sin, 28 so that the people of the land from which You brought us will not say, “^aBecause the LORD was not capable of bringing them into the land which He had promised them and because He hated them He has brought them out to the wilderness in order to kill them.” 29 Yet they are Your people and ^aYour inheritance, whom You have brought out by Your ^bgreat power and by Your outstretched arm.’
