Now after this ^athe Lord appointed ¹seventy ^bothers, and sent them ^cin pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2 And He was saying to them, “^aThe harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go! ^aBehold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 ^aCarry no money belt, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one on the way. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ 6 And if a ¹man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him, but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in ¹that house, eating and drinking ²what they give you; for ^athe laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. 8 And whatever city you enter and they receive you, ^aeat what is set before you; 9 and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘^aThe kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But in whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘^aEven the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off against you; yet know this, that ^bthe kingdom of God is at hand.’ 12 I say to you, ^ait will be more tolerable in that day for ^bSodom than for that city.

13 “^aWoe to you, ^bChorazin! Woe to you, ^cBethsaida! For if the ¹miracles had been performed in ^dTyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in ^2esackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for ^aTyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15 And you, ^aCapernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades!

16 “^aThe one who listens to you listens to Me, and ^bthe one who rejects you rejects Me. And he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

17 Now the ¹seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even ^athe demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I was watching ^aSatan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to ^atread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^ayour names are recorded in heaven.”

21 ^aAt that very ¹time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I ²praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 22 ^aAll things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and ^bno one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

23 ^aAnd turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, 24 for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”

25 ^aAnd behold, a ^bscholar of the Law stood up and was putting Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered and said, “^aYOU SHALL LOVE THE ¹LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; ^aDO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE.” 29 But wishing ^ato justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied and said, “A man was ^agoing down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and ¹beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 And a priest happened to be going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a ^aSamaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him, and when he saw him, he felt compassion. 34 And he came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them, and he put him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And on the next day he took out two ¹denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ 36 Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do ¹the same.”

38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named ^aMartha welcomed Him into her home. 39 And she had a sister called ^aMary, who was also ^bseated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. 40 But ^aMartha was distracted with ¹all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the ²preparations alone? Then tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “^aMartha, Martha, you are ^bworried and bothered about so many things, 42 ^abut only one thing is necessary, for ^bMary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Now after this ^athe Lord appointed ¹seventy ^bothers, and sent them out ahead of Him, ^ctwo by two, into every city and place where He was about to go. 2 He was saying to them, “^aThe harvest is abundant for there are many who need to hear the good news about salvation, but the workers those available to proclaim the message of salvation are few. Therefore, prayerfully ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest. 3 Go your way; ^alisten carefully: I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 ^aDo not carry a money belt, a provision bag, or extra sandals; and do not ¹greet anyone along the way who would delay you. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘¹Peace that is, a blessing of well-being and prosperity, the favor of God to this house.’ 6 And if anyone of peace is there someone who is sweet-spirited and hospitable, your blessing of peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they provide, for ^athe laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not move from house to house. Deut 24:15 8 Whenever you go into a city and they welcome you, ^aeat what is set before you; 9 and heal those in it who are sick authenticating your message, and say to them, ‘^aThe kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘^aEven the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you breaking all ties; yet understand this, that ^bthe kingdom of God has come near and you rejected it.’ 12 I tell you, ^ait will be more bearable in that day of judgment for ^bSodom than for that city. Gen 19:24-28

13 “^aWoe (judgment is coming) to you, ^bChorazin! Woe to you, ^cBethsaida! For if the miracles performed in you had been performed in ^dTyre and Sidon, they would have repented and changed their minds long ago, sitting in ^esackcloth and ashes to show deep regret for sin. 14 However, it will be more tolerable for ^aTyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15 And you, ^aCapernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades (the realm of the dead) .

16 “^aThe one who listens to you listens to Me; and ^bthe one who rejects you rejects Me; and the one who rejects Me rejects Him My heavenly Father who sent Me.”

17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even ^athe demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 He said to them, “I watched ^aSatan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. 19 Listen carefully: I have given you authority that you now possess to ^atread on ¹serpents and scorpions, and the ability to exercise authority over all the power of the enemy (Satan) ; and nothing will in any way harm you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^ayour names are recorded in heaven.” Ex 32:32; Ps 69:28; Dan 12:1; Rev 3:5

21 ^aIn that very hour He was overjoyed and rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and He said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things relating to salvation from the ¹wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to infants the childlike and untaught. Yes, Father, for this way was Your gracious will and choice, and was well-pleasing in Your sight. 22 ^aAll things have been transferred and turned over to Me by My Father and ^bno one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.”

23 Then ^aturning to His disciples, Jesus said privately, “Blessed joyful, spiritually enlightened, and favored by God are the eyes which see what you see, Matt 13:16, 17 24 for I say to you that many prophets and kings longed to see what you see, and they did not see it; and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

25 ^aAnd a certain ^blawyer an expert in Mosaic Law stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Matt 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-31 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he replied, “^aYOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” Lev 19:18; Deut 6:5 28 Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly; ^aDO THIS habitually AND YOU WILL LIVE.” Lev 18:5; Ezek 20:11; Matt 19:17 29 But he, wishing ^ato justify and vindicate himself, asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 Jesus replied, “A man was ^agoing down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, who stripped him of his clothes and belongings, beat him, and went their way unconcerned, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by coincidence a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also came down to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side of the road. 33 But a ^aSamaritan (foreigner) , who was traveling, came upon him; and when he saw him, he was deeply moved with compassion for him, 34 and went to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them to sooth and disinfect the injuries; and he put him on his own pack-animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 On the next day he took out two denarii (two days’ wages) and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.’ 36 Which of these three do you think proved himself a neighbor to the man who encountered the robbers?” 37 He answered, “The one who showed compassion and mercy to him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and constantly do the same.”

38 Now while they were on their way, Jesus entered a village called Bethany, and a woman named ^aMartha welcomed Him into her home. John 11:1 39 She had a sister named ^aMary, who ^bseated herself at the Lord’s feet and was continually listening to His teaching. 40 But ^aMartha was very busy and distracted with all of her serving responsibilities; and she approached Him and said, “Lord, is it of no concern to You that my sister has left me to do the serving alone? Tell her to help me and do her part.” 41 But the Lord replied to her, “^aMartha, Martha, you are ^bworried and bothered and anxious about so many things; 42 ^abut only one thing is necessary, ^bfor Mary has chosen the good part that which is to her advantage, which will not be taken away from her.”
