Also have guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem stand, each at his post, and each in front of his own house.” 4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few and the houses were not rebuilt.

5 ^aThen my God put it into my heart, and I gathered the nobles, the officials, and the people to be recorded by genealogies. Then I found the book of the genealogy of those who came up first, and in it I found written:

6 ^aThese are the ¹people of the province who came up out of the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had taken away into exile, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his city, 7 who came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, ¹Azariah, ²Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, ³Mispereth, Bigvai, ⁴Nehum, Baanah.

64 These searched in their genealogical records, but it could not be found; therefore they were considered unclean and excluded from the priesthood. 65 ^aAnd the ¹governor said to them that they should not eat from the most holy things until a priest stood with ^2bUrim and Thummim.

70 Some from among the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The ^1agovernor gave to the treasury 1,000 gold ²drachmas, 50 bowls, 530 priests’ tunics. 71 Some of the heads of fathers’ households gave into the treasury of the work 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 silver ¹minas. 72 That which the rest of the people gave was 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,000 silver minas and 67 priests’ tunics.

73 So ^athe priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel lived in their cities.

^bThen the seventh month came, and the sons of Israel were in their cities.

Now when ^athe wall had been rebuilt and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites had been appointed, 2 I put my brother ^aHanani, with ^bHananiah the commander of ^cthe fortress, in charge of Jerusalem, for Hananiah was a more ^dfaithful and God-fearing man than many of the others. 3 I said to them, “Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the ¹sun is hot; and while the watchmen are still standing guard, have them shut and bar the doors. Appoint guards from the residents of Jerusalem, each at his post on the wall, and each in front of his own house.” 4 Now the city was spacious and large, but there were few people in it and the houses had not yet been built.

5 ^aThen my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be registered by genealogy. Then I found the register of the genealogy of those who came from Babylon first, and I found the following record:

6 ^aThese are the sons (descendants, people) of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had deported to Babylon; they returned to Jerusalem and to Judah, each to his city, 7 the ones who came with ¹Zerubbabel, Jeshua, ²Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.

60 All the temple servants and the sons of Solomon’s servants, totaled 392.

61 And these were the ones who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addon and Immer; but they had no birth records and could not prove their fathers’ houses or their descent, whether they were of Israel: 62 the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, 642. 63 Of the priests: the sons of Hobaiah, the sons of Hakkoz, and the sons of Barzillai, who was so named because he had married one of the daughters of Barzillai, the well-known Gileadite, and was named after them. 64 These men searched for their ancestral registration among those recorded in the genealogies, but it was not located; so they were excluded from the priesthood as ceremonially unclean. 65 ^aThe governor told them that they should not eat any of the most holy food until a priest arose with ^1bUrim and Thummim to determine God’s will in the matter.

66 The entire assembly together was 42,360, 67 besides their male and their female servants, of whom there were 7,337; and they had 245 male and female singers. 68 ^1aTheir horses were 736; their mules, 245; 69 ¹their camels, 435; their donkeys, 6,720.

70 Some from among the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The ^agovernor gave to the treasury 1,000 gold drachmas, 50 basins, 530 priests’ garments. 71 Some of the heads of fathers’ households gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 gold drachmas and 2,200 silver minas. 72 And what the rest of the people gave was 20,000 gold drachmas, 2,000 silver minas, and 67 priests’ garments.

70 Some of the heads of fathers’ households gave to the work. The ^1agovernor gave to the treasury a thousand gold drachmas, fifty basins, and 530 priests’ garments. 71 And some of the heads of fathers’ households gave to the treasury for the work twenty thousand gold drachmas and 2,200 silver minas. 72 What the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand gold drachmas, two thousand silver minas, and sixty-seven priests’ garments.

73 Now ^athe priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, some of the people, the temple servants, and all Israel lived in their cities.

^bAnd when the seventh month came, the sons of Israel were in their cities.
