^aPor aquel tiempo¹, Herodes el tetrarca^b oyó la fama de Jesús, 2 y dijo a sus sirvientes: Este es Juan el Bautista^a. Él ha resucitado de entre los muertos, y por eso es que poderes milagrosos actúan en él. 3 Porque ^aHerodes había prendido a Juan, lo había atado¹ y puesto en la cárcel^b por causa de Herodías^c, mujer de su hermano Felipe; 4 porque Juan le decía: No te es lícito tenerla^a. 5 Y aunque Herodes quería matarlo, tenía miedo al pueblo¹, porque consideraban² a Juan como un profeta^a. 6 Pero cuando llegó¹ el cumpleaños de Herodes, la hija de Herodías^a danzó ante² ellos y agradó a ^bHerodes. 7 Por lo cual le prometió con juramento darle lo que ella pidiera. 8 Ella, instigada por su madre, dijo*: Dame aquí, en una bandeja la cabeza de Juan el Bautista. 9 Y aunque el rey se entristeció, a causa de sus¹ juramentos y de sus invitados², ordenó que se la dieran; 10 y mandó decapitar a Juan en la cárcel. 11 Y trajeron su cabeza en una bandeja y se la dieron a la muchacha, y ella se la llevó a su madre. 12 Los discípulos de Juan¹ llegaron y recogieron el cuerpo y lo sepultaron; y fueron y se lo comunicaron a Jesús.

13 ^aAl oír esto, Jesús se retiró de allí en una barca, solo, a un lugar desierto; y cuando las multitudes lo supieron¹, le siguieron a pie desde las ciudades. 14 Y al desembarcar¹, vio una gran multitud^a, y tuvo compasión de ellos y sanó a sus enfermos^b. 15 Al atardecer se le acercaron los discípulos, diciendo: El lugar está desierto y la hora es ya avanzada; despide, pues, a las multitudes para que vayan a las aldeas y se compren alimentos. 16 Pero Jesús les dijo: No hay necesidad de que se vayan; dadles vosotros de comer. 17 Entonces ellos le dijeron*: No tenemos aquí más que cinco panes y dos peces^a. 18 Él les dijo: Traédmelos acá. 19 Y ordenando a la muchedumbre que se recostara sobre la hierba, tomó los cinco panes y los dos peces, y levantando los ojos al cielo, bendijo los alimentos^a, y partiendo los panes, se los dio a los discípulos y los discípulos a la multitud. 20 Y comieron todos y se saciaron. Y recogieron lo que sobró de los pedazos: doce cestas llenas^a. 21 Y los que comieron fueron unos cinco mil hombres, sin contar las mujeres y los niños.

22 ^aEnseguida hizo que los discípulos¹ subieran a la barca y fueran delante de Él a la otra orilla, mientras Él despedía a la multitud. 23 Después de despedir a la multitud, subió al monte a solas para orar^a; y al anochecer, estaba allí solo. 24 Pero la barca estaba ya a muchos estadios¹ de tierra, y era azotada² por las olas, porque el viento era contrario. 25 Y a la cuarta vigilia^a de la noche¹, Jesús vino a ellos andando sobre el mar. 26 Y los discípulos, viéndole andar sobre el mar, se turbaron, y decían: ¡Es un fantasma^a! Y de miedo, se pusieron a gritar. 27 Pero enseguida Jesús les habló, diciendo: Tened ánimo, soy yo^a; no temáis^b. 28 Respondiéndole Pedro, dijo: Señor, si eres tú, mándame que vaya a ti sobre las aguas. 29 Y Él dijo: Ven. Y descendiendo Pedro de la barca, caminó sobre las aguas, y fue hacia Jesús. 30 Pero viendo la fuerza del viento tuvo miedo, y empezando a hundirse gritó, diciendo: ¡Señor, sálvame! 31 Y al instante Jesús, extendiendo la mano, lo sostuvo y le dijo*: Hombre de poca fe, ¿por qué dudaste^a? 32 Cuando ellos subieron a la barca, el viento se calmó. 33 Entonces los que estaban en la barca le adoraron, diciendo: En verdad eres Hijo de Dios^a.

34 ^aTerminada la travesía, bajaron a¹ tierra en Genesaret^b. 35 Y cuando los hombres de aquel lugar reconocieron a Jesús¹, enviaron a decirlo por toda aquella comarca de alrededor y le trajeron todos los que tenían algún mal. 36 Y le rogaban que les dejara tocar siquiera el borde de su manto^a; y todos los que lo tocaban quedaban curados^b.

^1aAt that time ^2bHerod ³the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, “^aThis is John the Baptist; he himself has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”

3 For when ^aHerod had John arrested, he bound him and put him ^bin prison because of ^cHerodias, the wife of his brother Philip. 4 For John had been saying to him, “^aIt is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded ¹John as ^aa prophet.

6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of ^aHerodias danced ¹before them and pleased ^bHerod, 7 so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 And after being prompted by her mother, she *said, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” 9 And although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths and ¹his dinner guests. 10 He sent word and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. 12 ¹John’s disciples came and took away the body and buried ²it; and they went and reported to Jesus.

13 ^aNow when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the ¹people heard about this, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 When He came ¹ashore, He ^asaw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and ^bhealed their sick.

15 Now when it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is secluded and the hour is already past to eat; send the crowds away, so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” 16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go; you give them something to eat!” 17 They *said to Him, “We have nothing here except ^afive loaves and two fish.” 18 And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 And ordering the crowds to ¹sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looked up toward heaven. He ^ablessed the food and breaking the loaves, He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces: twelve full ^abaskets. 21 There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.

22 ^aImmediately afterward He compelled the disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. 23 After He had sent the crowds away, ^aHe went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. 24 But the boat was already ¹a long distance from the land, ²battered by the waves; for the wind was ^3acontrary. 25 And in ^athe ¹fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. 26 When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is ^aa ghost!” And they cried out ¹in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “^aTake courage, ¹it is I; ^bdo not be afraid.”

28 Peter responded and said to Him, “Lord, if ¹it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” 29 And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and when he began to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out with His hand and took hold of him, and *said to him, “^aYou of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are truly ^aGod’s Son!”

34 ^aWhen they had crossed over, they came to land at ^bGennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place ¹recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding region and brought to Him all who were sick; 36 and they pleaded with Him that they might just touch ^athe ¹border of His cloak; and all who ^btouched it were cured.
