Y Jefté galaadita^a era un guerrero valiente¹, hijo de una ramera. Y Galaad era el padre de² Jefté. 2 Y la mujer de Galaad le dio hijos; y cuando los hijos de su mujer crecieron, echaron fuera a Jefté, y le dijeron: No tendrás heredad en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer. 3 Jefté huyó de sus hermanos y habitó en la tierra de Tob^a; y hombres indignos se juntaron con¹ Jefté y salían con él.

4 Después de cierto tiempo sucedió que los hijos de Amón^a pelearon contra Israel. 5 Y¹ cuando los hijos de Amón pelearon contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob. 6 Y dijeron a Jefté: Ven y sé nuestro jefe para que peleemos contra los hijos de Amón. 7 Entonces Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me odiasteis y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, habéis venido a mí ahora cuando estáis en apuros^a? 8 Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: Por esta causa hemos vuelto a ti: para que vengas con nosotros y pelees contra los hijos de Amón y seas jefe sobre todos los habitantes de Galaad^a. 9 Y Jefté dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para pelear contra los hijos de Amón y el SEÑOR me¹ los entrega, ¿seré yo vuestro jefe? 10 Y los ancianos de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: El SEÑOR es testigo¹ entre nosotros^a; ciertamente haremos como has dicho². 11 Jefté fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo hizo cabeza y jefe sobre ellos; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante del SEÑOR en Mizpa^a.

12 Y envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón, diciendo: ¿Qué hay entre tú y yo¹, que has venido a mí para pelear contra mi tierra? 13 Y el rey de los hijos de Amón dijo a los mensajeros de Jefté: Porque Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subieron de Egipto, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc^a y el Jordán; por tanto devuélvela ahora en paz. 14 Pero Jefté volvió a enviar mensajeros al rey de los hijos de Amón, 15 que le dijeron: Así dice Jefté: «Israel no tomó la tierra de Moab, ni la tierra de los hijos de Amón. 16 Porque cuando subieron de Egipto, e Israel pasó por el desierto hasta el mar Rojo^1a y llegó a Cades^b, 17 Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: “Permítenos, te rogamos, pasar por tu tierra”, pero el rey de Edom no les escuchó. También enviaron mensajeros al rey de Moab pero él no consintió^a, así que Israel permaneció en Cades. 18 Luego atravesaron el desierto y rodearon la tierra de Edom y de Moab^a, llegaron al lado oriental de la tierra de Moab y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón; pero no entraron en el territorio de Moab^b, porque el Arnón era la frontera de Moab. 19 ^aY envió Israel mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, y le dijo Israel: “Permítenos, te rogamos, pasar por tu tierra a nuestro lugar”. 20 Pero Sehón no confió en Israel para darle paso por su territorio; reunió, pues, Sehón a todo su pueblo y acampó en Jahaza, y peleó contra Israel. 21 Y el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y los derrotaron¹, e Israel tomó posesión de toda la tierra de los amorreos, los habitantes de esa región^a. 22 Y poseyeron todo el territorio de los amorreos desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc^a, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán. 23 Y puesto que el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, expulsó¹ a los amorreos de delante de su pueblo Israel, ¿has tú de poseerla? 24 ¿No posees tú lo que Quemos^a, tu dios, te ha dado para poseer? De modo que todo el territorio que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios ha desposeído delante de nosotros, lo poseeremos. 25 Ahora pues, ¿eres tú mejor que Balac, hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab^a? ¿Acaso luchó él con Israel, o acaso peleó contra ellos? 26 Mientras Israel habitaba en Hesbón y sus pueblos^a, y en Aroer y sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están a orillas del Arnón, trescientos años, ¿por qué no las recuperaste durante ese tiempo? 27 Por tanto, yo no he pecado contra ti, pero tú me estás haciendo mal al hacer guerra contra mí; que el SEÑOR, el Juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón^a». 28 Pero el rey de los hijos de Amón no hizo caso al mensaje¹ que Jefté le envió.

29 Y el Espíritu del SEÑOR vino sobre Jefté^a, y pasó por Galaad y Manasés; luego pasó por Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad fue adonde estaban los hijos de Amón. 30 Y Jefté hizo un voto al SEÑOR, y dijo: Si en verdad entregas en mis manos a los hijos de Amón, 31 sucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando yo vuelva en paz de los hijos de Amón, será del SEÑOR, o¹ lo ofreceré como holocausto. 32 Y Jefté cruzó adonde estaban los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos; y el SEÑOR los entregó en su mano. 33 Y los hirió con una gran matanza desde Aroer hasta la entrada de Minit^a, veinte ciudades, hasta Abel-keramim. Y los hijos de Amón fueron sometidos delante de los hijos de Israel.

34 Cuando Jefté llegó a su casa en Mizpa^a, he aquí, su hija salió a recibirlo con panderos y con danzas^b. Era ella su única hija; fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija. 35 Y¹ cuando la vio, él rasgó sus ropas y dijo: ¡Ay, hija mía! Me has abatido y estás entre los que me afligen; porque he dado mi palabra² al SEÑOR, y no me puedo retractar^a. 36 Entonces ella le dijo: Padre mío, has dado tu palabra¹ al SEÑOR; haz conmigo conforme a lo que has dicho^2a, ya que el SEÑOR te ha vengado de tus enemigos, los hijos de Amón. 37 Y ella dijo a su padre: Que se haga esto por mí; déjame sola por dos meses, para que vaya yo a¹ los montes y llore por mi virginidad^a, yo y mis compañeras. 38 Y él dijo: Ve, y la dejó ir por dos meses; y ella se fue con sus compañeras, y lloró su virginidad por los montes. 39 Al¹ cabo de los dos meses ella regresó a su padre, que hizo con ella conforme al voto que había hecho; y ella no tuvo relaciones con ningún hombre². Y se hizo costumbre en Israel, 40 que de año en año las hijas de Israel fueran cuatro días en el año a conmemorar¹ a la hija de Jefté galaadita.

Now ^aJephthah the Gileadite was a ¹valiant warrior, but he was the son of a prostitute. And Gilead had fathered Jephthah. 2 Gilead’s wife bore him sons; and when his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You shall not have an inheritance in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.” 3 So Jephthah fled from his brothers and lived in the land of ^aTob; and worthless men gathered ¹around Jephthah, and they went ²wherever he did.

4 Now it came about, after a while, that ^athe sons of Ammon fought against Israel. 5 When the sons of Ammon fought against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob; 6 and they said to Jephthah, “Come and be our leader, that we may fight against the sons of Ammon.” 7 But Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “^aDid you not hate me and drive me from my father’s house? So why have you come to me now when you are in trouble?” 8 The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “For this reason we have now returned to you, that you may go with us and fight the sons of Ammon, and ^abecome our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.” 9 So Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “If you bring me back to fight against the sons of Ammon and the LORD gives them up ¹to me, will I become your head?” 10 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “^aThe LORD is ¹witness between us; be assured we will do ²as you have said.” 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and leader over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the LORD at ^aMizpah.

12 So Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the sons of Ammon, saying, “What conflict do you and I have, that you have come to me to fight against my land?” 13 And the king of the sons of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthah, “It is because Israel ^atook my land when they came up from Egypt, from the Arnon as far as the ^bJabbok and the Jordan; so return them peaceably now.” 14 But Jephthah sent messengers once again to the king of the sons of Ammon, 15 and they said to him, “This is what Jephthah says: ‘Israel did not take the land of Moab nor the land of the sons of Ammon. 16 For when they came up from Egypt, and Israel ^awent through the wilderness to the ¹Red Sea, and ^bcame to Kadesh, 17 then Israel ^asent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, “Please let us pass through your land”; but the king of Edom would not listen. ^bAnd they also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. So Israel remained at Kadesh. 18 Then they went through the wilderness and ^aaround the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and came to the east side of the land of Moab, and they camped beyond the Arnon; but they ^bdid not enter the territory of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab. 19 And Israel sent ^amessengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, “Please let us pass through your land to our place.” 20 But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory; so Sihon gathered all his people and camped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel. 21 And the LORD, the God of Israel, handed Sihon and all his people over to Israel, and they ^1adefeated them; so Israel took possession of all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country. 22 ^aSo they possessed all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok, and from the wilderness as far as the Jordan. 23 And now the LORD, the God of Israel, has driven out the Amorites from His people Israel; so should you possess it? 24 Do you not possess what ^aChemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever the LORD our God has dispossessed before us, we will possess it. 25 Now then, are you any better than ^aBalak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever contend with Israel, or did he ever fight against them? 26 ^aWhile Israel was living in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time? 27 So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by making war against me. ^aMay the LORD, the Judge, judge today between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.’” 28 But the king of the sons of Ammon ¹disregarded the message which Jephthah sent him.

29 Now ^athe Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon. 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD and said, “If You will indeed hand over to me the sons of Ammon, 31 then whatever comes out the doors of my house to meet me when I return ¹safely from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the LORD’S, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.” 32 So Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD handed them over to him. 33 He ¹inflicted a very great defeat on them from Aroer ²to the entrance of ^aMinnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim. So the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.

34 But Jephthah came to his house at ^aMizpah, and behold, his daughter was coming out to meet him ^bwith tambourines and with dancing. And she was his one and only child; besides her he had no son or daughter. 35 So when he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Oh, my daughter! You have brought me disaster, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have ¹given my word to the LORD, and ^aI cannot take it back.” 36 So she said to him, “My father, you have ¹given your word to the LORD; ^ado to me just as ²you have said, since the LORD has brought you vengeance on your enemies, the sons of Ammon.” 37 And she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me; allow me two months, so that I may ¹go to the mountains and weep because of ^amy virginity, I and my friends.” 38 Then he said, “Go.” So he let her go for two months; and she left with her friends, and wept on the mountains because of her virginity. 39 And at the end of two months she returned to her father, who did to her ¹what he had vowed; and she ²had no relations with a man. And it became a custom in Israel, 40 that the ¹daughters of Israel went annually to ²commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite for four days in the year.
