Y en¹ el mes séptimo fue Ismael, hijo de Netanías, hijo de Elisama, de la familia² real, y uno de los oficiales principales del rey, junto con diez hombres, adonde estaba Gedalías^a, hijo de Ahicam^b, en Mizpa^c. Y mientras comían pan juntos^d allí en Mizpa, 2 se levantó Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y los diez hombres que estaban con él, e hirieron a espada a Gedalías^a, hijo de Ahicam, hijo de Safán, y mataron al que el rey de Babilonia había puesto para gobernar sobre la tierra^b. 3 Ismael mató también a todos los judíos que estaban con él, es decir, con Gedalías, en Mizpa, y a los hombres de guerra caldeos que se encontraban allí.

4 Y sucedió que al siguiente¹ día del asesinato de Gedalías, cuando nadie lo sabía aún, 5 ochenta hombres vinieron^a de Siquem^b, de Silo^c y de Samaria^d, con las barbas rapadas^e, las vestiduras rasgadas^f y cubiertos de incisiones¹, y con ofrendas de cereal e incienso en sus manos, para llevarlos a la casa del SEÑOR^g. 6 Entonces Ismael, hijo de Netanías, salió a su encuentro desde Mizpa, llorando mientras iba; y¹ cuando los encontró, les dijo: Venid^a a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam. 7 Y sucedió que cuando entraron en¹ la ciudad, Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y los hombres que con él estaban, los degollaron^a y los echaron en la cisterna. 8 Pero diez hombres que se encontraban entre ellos, dijeron a Ismael: No nos mates; pues tenemos escondidos^a en el campo, depósitos de trigo, cebada, aceite y miel. Y él se contuvo y no los mató como a sus compañeros. 9 Y la cisterna^a donde Ismael había echado todos los cadáveres de los hombres que él había matado por causa¹ de Gedalías, era la que el rey Asa había hecho por causa de Baasa, rey de Israel^b; Ismael, hijo de Netanías, la llenó de muertos. 10 Después Ismael tomó cautivo a todo el resto del pueblo que estaba en Mizpa, a las hijas del rey y a todo el pueblo que había quedado en Mizpa, a los cuales Nabuzaradán, capitán de la guardia, había puesto bajo el mando de Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam^a. Los tomó, pues, cautivos Ismael, hijo de Netanías^b, y fue a pasarse a los hijos de Amón.

11 Y oyó Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los capitanes de las tropas que estaban con él de todo el mal que había hecho Ismael, hijo de Netanías^a. 12 Entonces tomaron a todos sus hombres y fueron a pelear^a contra Ismael, hijo de Netanías, y lo encontraron junto al gran estanque¹ que está en Gabaón^b. 13 Y sucedió que cuando todo el pueblo que estaba con Ismael vio a Johanán, hijo de Carea, y a los capitanes de las tropas que estaban con él, se alegraron. 14 Y todo el pueblo al que Ismael llevaba cautivo a Mizpa dio la vuelta y regresó y se fue con Johanán, hijo de Carea. 15 Pero Ismael, hijo de Netanías, escapó^a de Johanán con ocho hombres y se fue con los hijos de Amón. 16 Entonces Johanán, hijo de Carea, y todos los capitanes de las tropas que estaban con él tomaron de Mizpa a todo el resto del pueblo que él había recobrado¹ de Ismael, hijo de Netanías, después queeste había matado a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam^a, es decir, a los hombres de guerra, las mujeres, los niños y los eunucos, que había traído de Gabaón. 17 Y fueron y se quedaron en Gerut-quimam^1a, que está junto a Belén, a fin de ir y entrar en Egipto^b, 18 a causa de los caldeos, porque les temían, ya que Ismael, hijo de Netanías, había matado a Gedalías, hijo de Ahicam, a quien el rey de Babilonia^a había puesto para gobernar la tierra^b.

^aNow in the seventh month ^bIshmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal ¹family and one of the chief officers of the king, along with ten men, came to Mizpah to ^cGedaliah the son of Ahikam. While they ^dwere eating bread together there in Mizpah, 2 Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him rose up, and ^astruck and killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and ^bput to death the one ^cwhom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land. 3 Ishmael also struck and killed all the Jews who were with him, that is with Gedaliah in Mizpah, and the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.

4 Now it happened on the ¹next day after the killing of Gedaliah, when no one knew about it, 5 that eighty men ^acame from ^bShechem, from ^cShiloh, and from ^dSamaria with ^etheir beards shaved off, their clothes torn, and ¹their bodies ^fgashed, having grain offerings and incense in their hands to bring to the ^ghouse of the LORD. 6 Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah left Mizpah to meet them, ^aweeping as he went; and as he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam!” 7 Yet it turned out that as soon as they came inside the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him ^aslaughtered them and threw them into the cistern. 8 But ten men who were found among them said to Ishmael, “Do not put us to death, for we have ^asupplies of wheat, barley, oil, and honey hidden in the field.” So he refrained and did not put them to death along with their companions.

9 Now as for the cistern where Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men whom he had struck and killed ¹because of Gedaliah, it was the ^aone that King Asa had constructed on ^baccount of Baasha, king of Israel; Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with the dead. 10 Then Ishmael took captive all the ^aremnant of the people who were in Mizpah, the ^bking’s daughters and all the people who were left in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had put in the custody of Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and proceeded to cross over to the sons of ^cAmmon.

11 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the ^acommanders of the forces that were with him heard about all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done. 12 So they took all the men and went to ^afight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and they found him by the ^blarge ¹pool that is in Gibeon. 13 Now as soon as all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him, they were joyful. 14 So all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and came back, and went to Johanan the son of Kareah. 15 But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah ^aescaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the sons of Ammon. 16 Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces that were with him took from Mizpah ^aall the remnant of the people whom he had ¹recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, after he had struck and killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, that is, the men who were ²soldiers, the women, the ³children, and the high officials, whom he had brought back from Gibeon. 17 And they went and stayed in ^1aGeruth Chimham, which is beside Bethlehem, in order to ^bproceed into Egypt 18 because of the Chaldeans; for they were ^aafraid of them, since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck and killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom ^bthe king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
