¿De dónde vienen las guerras y los conflictos¹ entre vosotros^a? ¿No vienen de vuestras pasiones² que combaten en vuestros miembros^b? 2 Codiciáis y no tenéis, por eso cometéis homicidio^a. Sois envidiosos y no podéis obtener, por eso combatís¹ y hacéis guerra. No tenéis, porque no pedís. 3 Pedís y no recibís^a, porque pedís con malos propósitos¹, para gastarlo en vuestros placeres. 4 ¡Oh almas adúlteras^1a! ¿No sabéis que la amistad del mundo^b es enemistad hacia Dios^c? Por tanto, el que quiere ser amigo del mundo, se constituye enemigo de Dios^d. 5 ¿O pensáis que la Escritura dice en vano^a: El celosamente anhela¹ el Espíritu^b que ha hecho morar en nosotros²? 6 Pero Él da mayor gracia^a. Por eso dice: DIOS RESISTE A LOS SOBERBIOS PERO DA GRACIA A LOS HUMILDES^b. 7 Por tanto, someteos a Dios^a. Resistid, pues, al diablo y huirá de vosotros^b. 8 Acercaos a Dios, y Él se acercará a vosotros^a. Limpiad vuestras manos^b, pecadores; y vosotros de doble ánimo^1c, purificad vuestros corazones^d. 9 Afligíos, lamentad y llorad^a; que vuestra risa se torne en llanto¹ y vuestro gozo en tristeza. 10 Humillaos en la presencia del Señor^a y Él os exaltará.

11 Hermanos^a, no habléis mal los unos de los otros^b. El que habla mal de un hermano o juzga a su hermano^c, habla mal de la ley^d y juzga a la ley; pero si tú juzgas a la ley, no eres cumplidor de la ley^e, sino juez de ella. 12 Solo hay un dador de la ley y juez^a, que es poderoso para salvar y para destruir^b; pero tú, ¿quién eres que juzgas a tu prójimo^c?

13 Oíd¹ ahora^a, los que decís: Hoy o mañana iremos a tal o cual ciudad^b y pasaremos allá un año, haremos negocio y tendremos ganancia. 14 Sin embargo, no sabéis¹ cómo será vuestra vida mañana².Solo sois un vapor que aparece por un poco de tiempo y luego se desvanece^a. 15 Más bien, debierais decir¹: Si el Señor quiere^a, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello. 16 Pero ahora os jactáis en vuestra arrogancia¹; toda jactancia semejante es mala^a. 17 A aquel, pues, que sabe hacer lo bueno¹ y no lo hace^a, le es pecado.

¹What is the source of quarrels and ^aconflicts among you? ²Is the source not your pleasures that wage ^bwar in ³your body’s parts? 2 You lust and do not have, so you ^acommit murder. And you are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and ^ado not receive, because you ask ¹with the wrong motives, so that you may spend what you request ²on your pleasures. 4 You ^aadulteresses, do you not know that friendship with ^bthe world is ^chostility toward God? ^dTherefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture ^asays to no purpose, “¹He ²jealously desires ^bthe Spirit whom He has made to dwell in us”? 6 But ^aHe gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “^bGOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.” 7 ^aSubmit therefore to God. But ^1bresist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 ^aCome close to God and He will come close to you. ^bCleanse your hands, you sinners; and ^cpurify your hearts, you ^1ddouble-minded. 9 ^aBe miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom. 10 ^aHumble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.

11 ^aDo not speak against one another, ^bbrothers and sisters. The one who speaks against a brother or sister, or ^cjudges his brother or sister, speaks against ^dthe law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not ^ea doer of the law but a judge of it. 12 There is only one ^aLawgiver and Judge, the One who is ^bable to save and to destroy; but ^cwho are you, ¹judging your neighbor?

13 ^aCome now, you who say, “^bToday or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” 14 ¹Yet you do not know ²what your life will be like tomorrow. ^aFor you are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away. 15 ¹Instead, you ought to say, “^aIf the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.” 16 But as it is, you boast in your ¹arrogance; ^aall such boasting is evil. 17 So ^afor one who knows the ¹right thing to do and does not do it, for him it is sin.
