Cuando José fue llevado¹ a Egipto, Potifar, un oficial egipcio de Faraón, capitán de la guardia, lo compró a² los ismaelitas^a que lo habían llevado³ allá. 2 Y el SEÑOR estaba con José^a, que llegó a ser un hombre próspero, y estaba en la casa de su amo el egipcio. 3 Y vio su amo que el SEÑOR estaba con él^a y que el SEÑOR hacía prosperar en su mano todo lo que él hacía^b. 4 Así encontró José gracia ante sus ojos y llegó a ser su siervo personal^1a, y lo hizo mayordomo sobre su casa y entregó en su mano todo lo que poseía^b. 5 Y sucedió que desde el tiempo que lo hizo mayordomo sobre su casa y sobre todo lo que poseía, el SEÑOR bendijo la casa del egipcio por causa de José^a; y la bendición del SEÑOR estaba sobre todo lo que poseía en la casa y en el campo^b. 6 Así que todo lo que poseía lo dejó en mano de José, y con él allí no se preocupaba de¹ nada, excepto del pan que comía. Y era José de gallarda² figura y de hermoso parecer^a.

7 Sucedió después de estas cosas que la mujer de su amo miró¹ a José con deseo^a y le dijo: Acuéstate conmigo^b. 8 Pero él rehusó^a y dijo a la mujer de su amo: Estando yo aquí¹, mi amo no se preocupa de nada² en la casa, y ha puesto en mi mano todo lo que posee. 9 No hay nadie¹ más grande que yo en esta casa^a, y nada me ha rehusado excepto a ti, pues tú eres su mujer. ¿Cómo entonces iba yo a hacer esta gran maldad y pecar contra Dios^b? 10 Y¹ ella insistía² a José día tras día, pero él no accedió a³ acostarse con ella o a estar con ella. 11 Pero sucedió un día¹ que él entró en casa para hacer su trabajo, y no había ninguno de los hombres de la casa allí dentro; 12 entonces ella lo asió de la ropa, diciendo: ¡Acuéstate conmigo! Mas él le dejó su ropa en la mano, y salió huyendo afuera. 13 Y¹ cuando ella vio que él había dejado su ropa en sus manos y había huido afuera, 14 llamó a los hombres de su casa y les dijo: Mirad, nos ha traído un hebreo¹ para que se burle de nosotros; vino a mí para acostarse conmigo, pero yo grité a gran voz. 15 Y sucedió que cuando él oyó que yo alzaba la voz y gritaba, dejó su ropa junto a mí y salió huyendo afuera. 16 Y ella dejó junto a sí la ropa de él hasta que su señor vino a casa. 17 Entonces ella le habló con¹ estas palabras, diciendo: Vino a mí el esclavo hebreo que nos trajiste, para burlarse de mí^a; 18 y¹ cuando levanté la voz y grité, él dejó su ropa junto a mí y huyó afuera.

19 Y aconteció que cuando su señor escuchó las palabras que su mujer le habló, diciendo: Esto es lo que¹ tu esclavo me hizo, se encendió su ira^a. 20 Entonces el amo de José lo tomó y lo echó en la cárcel^a, en el lugar donde se encerraba a los presos del rey; y allí permaneció en la cárcel. 21 Mas el SEÑOR estaba con José^a y le extendió su misericordia, y le concedió gracia ante los ojos del jefe de la cárcel^b. 22 Y el jefe de la cárcel confió en mano de José a todos los presos que estaban en la cárcel^a, y de todo lo que allí se hacía él era responsable. 23 El jefe de la cárcel no supervisaba nada que estuviera bajo la responsabilidad de José^1a, porque el SEÑOR estaba con él^b, y todo lo que él emprendía, el SEÑOR lo hacía prosperar^c.

Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the bodyguard, bought him ¹from the ^aIshmaelites, who had taken him down there. 2 And ^athe LORD was with Joseph, so he became a ¹successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian. 3 Now his master ^asaw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD ^bmade all that he did prosper in his hand. 4 So Joseph ^afound favor in his sight and ¹became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and ²put him in charge of ^ball that he owned. 5 It came about that from the time he made him overseer in his house and over all that he owned, the LORD ^ablessed the Egyptian’s house on account of Joseph; so ^bthe LORD’S blessing was upon all that he owned, in the house and in the field. 6 So he left ¹Joseph in charge of everything that he owned; and with him there he did not ²concern himself with anything except the ³food which he ⁴ate.

Now Joseph was ^ahandsome in form and appearance. 7 And it came about after these events ^athat his master’s wife ¹had her eyes on Joseph, and she said, “^bSleep with me.” 8 But ^ahe refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, with me here, my master ¹does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has ²put me in charge of all that he owns. 9 ^1aThere is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil, and ^bsin against God?” 10 Though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her. 11 Now it happened ¹one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the people of the household was there inside. 12 So she grabbed him by his garment, saying, “Sleep with me!” But he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside. 13 ¹When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and had fled outside, 14 she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought in a ¹Hebrew to us to make fun of us; he came in to me to sleep with me, and I ²screamed. 15 When he heard that I raised my voice and ¹screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled and went outside.” 16 So she ¹left his garment beside her until his master came home. 17 Then she ^aspoke to him ¹with these ²words: “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to us, came in to me to make fun of me; 18 but when I raised my voice and ¹screamed, he left his garment beside me and fled outside.”

19 Now when his master heard the words of his wife which she spoke to him, saying, “¹This is what your slave did to me,” ^ahis anger burned. 20 So Joseph’s master took him and ^aput him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were confined; and he was there in the prison. 21 But ^athe LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and ^bgave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison. 22 And the warden of the prison ^1aput Joseph in charge of all the prisoners who were in the prison; so that whatever was done there, he was ²responsible for it. 23 ^aThe warden of the prison did not supervise anything ¹under Joseph’s authority, because ^bthe LORD was with him; and, ^cthe LORD made whatever he did prosper.
