Después de esto aconteció que teniendo Absalón, hijo de David, una hermana muy hermosa que se llamaba Tamar^a, se enamoró de ella Amnón, hijo de David^b. 2 Y Amnón estaba tan atormentado a causa de su hermana Tamar que se enfermó, porque ella era virgen, y le parecía difícil a¹ Amnón hacerle cosa alguna. 3 Pero Amnón tenía un amigo que se llamaba Jonadab, hijo de Simea^1a, hermano de David; y Jonadab era un hombre muy astuto. 4 Yeste le dijo: Hijo del rey, ¿por qué estás tan deprimido día tras día¹? ¿No me lo contarás? Y Amnón le dijo: Estoy enamorado de Tamar, hermana de mi hermano Absalón. 5 Entonces Jonadab le dijo: Acuéstate en tu cama, y finge que estás enfermo; y cuando tu padre venga a verte, dile: «Te ruego que dejes que mi hermana Tamar venga y me dé algún alimento para comer, y que prepare la comida delante de mí para que yo la vea y la coma de su mano». 6 Amnón se acostó y se fingió enfermo. Cuando el rey vino a verlo, Amnón dijo al rey: Te ruego que venga mi hermana Tamar y haga dos tortas^a delante de mí para que yo coma de su mano.

7 Y David envió mensaje a Tamar, a su casa, diciendo: Ve ahora a la casa de tu hermano Amnón, y prepárale la comida. 8 Fue, pues, Tamar a la casa de su hermano Amnón, y él estaba acostado. Y ella tomó masa, la amasó, hizo tortas delante de él y las coció¹. 9 Y tomando la sartén, las sirvió¹ delante de él, pero él rehusó comer. Y Amnón dijo: Que salgan todos de aquí^2a. Y todos salieron de allí³. 10 Entonces Amnón dijo a Tamar: Trae la comida a la alcoba para que yo coma de tu mano. Y Tamar tomó las tortas que había hecho y las llevó a su hermano Amnón a la alcoba. 11 Cuando ella se las llevó para que comiera, él le echó mano, y le dijo: Ven, acuéstate conmigo^a, hermana mía. 12 Pero ella le respondió: No, hermano mío, no abuses de mí, porque tal cosa no se hace en Israel^a; no cometas esta infamia^b. 13 Pues, ¿adónde iría yo con mi deshonra^a? Y tú serías como uno de los insensatos¹ de Israel. Ahora pues, te ruego que hables al rey, que él no me negará a ti. 14 Pero él no quiso escucharla¹; como era más fuerte que ella, la forzó, y se acostó con ella^a.

15 Entonces Amnón la aborreció con un odio muy grande; porque el odio con que la aborreció fue mayor que el amor con que la había amado. Y Amnón le dijo: Levántate, vete. 16 Pero ella le respondió: No, porque esta injusticia que me haces, echándome fuera, es mayor que la otra que me has hecho. Mas él no quiso oírla. 17 Llamó, pues, a su criado¹ que le servía y le dijo: Echa a esta mujer fuera de aquí², y cierra la puerta tras ella. 18 (Llevaba ella un vestido^a de manga larga¹, porque así se vestían con túnicas las hijas vírgenes del rey.) Su criado la echó fuera, y cerró la puerta tras ella. 19 Entonces Tamar se puso ceniza¹ sobre la cabeza, rasgó el vestido de manga larga² que llevaba puesto^a, y se fue gritando^b con las manos sobre la cabeza^c.

20 Su hermano Absalón le dijo: ¿Ha estado contigo tu hermano Amnón? Guarda silencio ahora, hermana mía; tu hermano es; no se angustie tu corazón por este asunto. Tamar, pues, se quedó desconsolada en casa de su hermano Absalón. 21 Cuando el rey David se enteró de todas estas cosas, se enojó mucho. 22 Pero Absalón no le habló a Amnón ni bien ni mal^a; pues Absalón odiaba a Amnón, porque había violado a su hermana Tamar^b.

23 Después de dos años, aconteció que teniendo Absalón esquiladores de ovejas^a en Baal-hazor, que está junto a Efraín, Absalón invitó a todos los hijos del rey. 24 Y vino Absalón al rey y dijo: He aquí, ahora tu siervo tiene esquiladores de ovejas; ruego que venga el rey y sus siervos con tu siervo. 25 Mas el rey respondió a Absalón: No, hijo mío, no debemos ir todos, para no ser carga para ti. Y aunque le insistió, no quiso ir, mas lo bendijo. 26 Entonces Absalón dijo: Pues si no, te ruego que dejes ir a mi hermano^a Amnón con nosotros. Y el rey le respondió: ¿Por qué ha de ir contigo? 27 Mas cuando Absalón le insistió, dejó ir con él a Amnón y a todos los hijos del rey.

28 Absalón ordenó a sus siervos, diciendo: Mirad, cuando el corazón de Amnón esté alegre por el vino^a, y cuando yo os diga: «Herid a Amnón», entonces matadle. No temáis; ¿no os lo he mandado yo? Tened ánimo y sed valientes¹. 29 Y los siervos de Absalón hicieron a Amnón tal como Absalón les había mandado. Entonces todos los hijos del rey se levantaron, y montándose cada uno en su mulo, huyeron^a.

30 Estando aún ellos en el camino, llegó a David el rumor que decía: Absalón ha dado muerte¹ a todos los hijos del rey, y no ha quedado ni uno de ellos. 31 Entonces el rey se levantó, rasgó sus vestidos^a y se echó en tierra^b; y todos sus siervos estaban a su lado con los vestidos rasgados. 32 Y Jonadab, hijo de Simea, hermano de David, dijo¹: No crea² mi señor que han dado muerte a todos los jóvenes, hijos del rey, puessolo ha muerto Amnón; porque esto había sido determinado por decisión³ de Absalón desde el día en que Amnón violó a su hermana Tamar^a. 33 Ahora pues, no tome en serio¹ mi señor^a el rey el rumor que dice: «todos los hijos del rey murieron», porquesolo Amnón ha muerto.

34 Entre tanto Absalón había huido^a. Y el joven que estaba de atalaya alzó los ojos y miró^b, y he aquí, mucha gente que venía por el camino que estaba a sus espaldas del lado del monte. 35 Y Jonadab dijo al rey: He aquí, son los hijos del rey que vienen; conforme a la palabra de tu siervo, así ha sucedido. 36 Y aconteció que apenas había acabado de hablar, he aquí, los hijos del rey llegaron, alzaron su voz y lloraron; y también el rey y todos sus siervos lloraron muy amargamente¹.

37 Huyó Absalón^a y fue a Talmai, hijo de Amiud, rey de Gesur^b. Y David lloraba por su hijo todos los días. 38 Así fue que Absalón huyó^a a Gesur, y estuvo allí tres años. 39 Y el rey David ansiaba ir adonde estaba Absalón, pues con respecto a Amnón que había muerto, ya se había consolado^a.

Now it was after this that ^aAbsalom the son of David had a beautiful sister whose name was ^bTamar, and ^cAmnon the son of David was in love with her. 2 But Amnon was so frustrated on account of his sister Tamar that he made himself ill, for she was a virgin, and it ¹seemed too difficult to Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of ^1aShimeah, David’s brother; and Jonadab was a very clever man. 4 And he said to him, “Why are you, the king’s son, so depressed morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” So Amnon said to him, “I am in love with Tamar, the sister of my brother Absalom.” 5 Jonadab then said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill; when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please have my sister Tamar come and give me food to eat, and have her prepare the ¹food in my sight, so that I may see it and eat from her hand.’” 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill; when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please have my sister Tamar come and ^amake me a couple of pastries in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”

7 Then David sent a messenger to the house for Tamar, saying, “Go now to your brother Amnon’s house, and prepare ¹food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, and he was lying in bed. And she took dough, kneaded it, made pastries in his sight, and baked the pastries. 9 Then she took the tray and served them to him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “^aHave everyone leave me.” So everyone left him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the ¹bedroom, so that I may eat from your hand.” So Tamar took the pastries which she had made and brought them into the bedroom to her brother Amnon. 11 When she brought them to him to eat, he ^atook hold of her and said to her, “Come, sleep with me, my sister.” 12 But she said to him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for ^asuch a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this ^bdisgraceful sin! 13 As for me, where could I ¹get rid of my shame? And as for you, you will be like one of the ²fools in Israel. Now then, please speak to the king, for ^ahe will not ³withhold me from you.” 14 However, he would not listen to ¹her; since he was stronger than she, he ^aviolated her and slept with her.

15 Then Amnon hated her with a very great hatred; indeed, the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up, go away!” 16 But she said to him, “No, because this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you have done to me!” Yet he would not listen to her. 17 Then he called his young man who attended him and said, “Now throw this woman out of my presence, and lock the door behind her!” 18 Now she had on ^aa ¹long-sleeved garment; for this is how the virgin daughters of the king dressed themselves in robes. Then his attendant took her out and locked the door behind her. 19 ^aTamar took ashes and put them on her head, and ^btore her ¹long-sleeved garment which was on her; and ^cshe put her hand on her head and went on her way, crying out as she went.

20 Then Absalom her brother said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? But now keep silent, my sister, he is your brother; do not take this matter to heart.” So Tamar remained and was isolated in her brother Absalom’s house. 21 Now when King David heard about all these matters, he became very angry. 22 But Absalom did not speak with Amnon ^aeither good or bad; for ^bAbsalom hated Amnon because he had violated his sister Tamar.

23 Now it came about after two full years that Absalom ^ahad sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons to celebrate.

24 And Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold now, your servant has sheepshearers; may the king and his servants please go with your servant.” 25 But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, we should not all go, so that we will not be a burden to you.” Though he urged him, he would not go; but he blessed him. 26 Then ^aAbsalom said, “If not, please have my brother Amnon go with us.” But the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 Nevertheless Absalom urged him, so he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.

28 Then Absalom commanded his servants, saying, “See now, ^awhen Amnon’s heart is cheerful with wine, and I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then put him to death. Do not fear; have I not commanded you myself? Be courageous and be ¹valiant.” 29 And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons got up and each mounted ^ahis mule and fled.

30 Now it was while they were on the way that the report came to David, saying, “Absalom has struck and killed all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.” 31 Then the king stood up, ^atore his clothes, and ^blay on the ground; and all his servants were standing by with clothes torn. 32 ^aAnd Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, ¹responded, “Let my lord not ²assume that they have put to death all the young men, the king’s sons, for only Amnon is dead; because this has been set up by the ³intent of Absalom since the day that he violated his sister Tamar. 33 So now, may my lord the king not ^atake the report to ¹heart, ²claiming, ‘all the king’s sons are dead’; but only Amnon is dead.”

34 Now ^aAbsalom had fled. And ^bthe young man who was the watchman raised his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him by the side of the mountain. 35 And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; so it has happened according to your servant’s word.” 36 As soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came and raised their voices and wept; and the king and all his servants also wept ¹very profusely.

37 Now ^aAbsalom had fled and gone to ^bTalmai the son of Ammihud, the king of ^cGeshur. And David mourned for his son every day. 38 ^aSo Absalom had fled and gone to Geshur, and was there for three years. 39 And the heart of King David longed to go out to Absalom; for ^ahe was comforted regarding Amnon, since he was dead.
