^aEn el séptimo año de Jehú, Joás comenzó a reinar, y reinó cuarenta años en Jerusalén; y el nombre de su madre era Sibia de Beerseba. 2 Y Joás hizo lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR todos los¹ días en que el sacerdote Joiada lo dirigió². 3 Solo que los lugares altos no fueron quitados; el pueblo aún sacrificaba y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos^a.

4 Entonces Joás dijo a los sacerdotes: Todo el dinero de las cosas sagradas que se trae a la casa del SEÑOR^a en moneda corriente, tanto el dinero estipulado a cada persona, como todo el dinero que cada uno voluntariamente traiga¹ a la casa del SEÑOR^b, 5 que los sacerdotes lo tomen para sí, cada cual de sus conocidos; y ellos repararán los daños¹ de la casa dondequiera que se encuentre algún daño.

6 Pero¹ en el año veintitrés del rey Joás, los sacerdotes aún no habían reparado los daños de la casa^a. 7 Entonces el rey Joás llamó al sacerdote Joiada y a los otros sacerdotes, y les dijo: ¿Por qué no reparáis los daños de la casa? Ahora pues, no toméis más dinero de vuestros conocidos, sino entregadlo para los daños de la casa. 8 Y consintieron los sacerdotes en no tomar más dinero del pueblo, ni reparar ellos los daños de la casa.

9 Entonces el sacerdote Joiada tomó un cofre e hizo un agujero en la tapa, y lo puso junto al altar, al lado derecho conforme uno entra a la casa del SEÑOR; y los sacerdotes que custodiaban el umbral, depositaban en él todo el dinero que se traía a la casa del SEÑOR^a. 10 Y cuando veían que había mucho dinero en el cofre, el escriba del rey y el sumo sacerdote subían y lo ataban en sacos, y contaban el dinero que se encontraba en la casa del SEÑOR^a. 11 Y entregaban el dinero que había sido contado¹ en manos de los que hacían el trabajo, los cuales tenían a su cargo la casa del SEÑOR, y ellos lo traían para pagar a los carpinteros y a los constructores que trabajaban en la casa del SEÑOR, 12 y a los albañiles y canteros, y para comprar madera y piedra de cantería para reparar los daños de la casa del SEÑOR, y para todo lo que se gastaba¹ para la casa, a fin de repararla^a. 13 Pero del dinero que se traía a la casa del SEÑOR^a, no se hicieron ni copas de plata, ni despabiladeras, ni tazones, ni trompetas, ni ninguna vasija de oro, ni vasijas de plata para la casa del SEÑOR^b; 14 porque lo daban a los que hacían el trabajo, y con él reparaban la casa del SEÑOR. 15 Y no se pedían cuentas a los hombres en cuyas manos se ponía el dinero para dárselo a los que hacían el trabajo, porque procedían fielmente^a. 16 No se traía a la casa del SEÑOR el dinero de las ofrendas por la culpa^a ni el dinero de las ofrendas por el pecado^b; era para los sacerdotes^c.

17 Entonces Hazael, rey de Aram, subió y peleó contra Gat y la tomó^a; y Hazael se propuso¹ subir contra Jerusalén^b. 18 Y Joás, rey de Judá, tomó todas las cosas sagradas que Josafat, Joram y Ocozías, sus padres, reyes de Judá, habían consagrado, y sus propias cosas sagradas y todo el oro que se encontraba en las tesorerías de la casa del SEÑOR^a y de la casa del rey, y las envió a Hazael, rey de Aram^b. Entonces él se retiró de Jerusalén.

19 Los demás hechos de Joás, y todo lo que hizo, ¿no están escritos en el libro de las Crónicas de los reyes de Judá? 20 ^aY sus siervos se levantaron y tramaron una conspiración, y mataron¹ a Joás^b en la casa de Milo^c, cuando descendía a Sila. 21 Pues sus siervos Josacar, hijo de Simeat, y Jozabad, hijo de Somer^a, lo hirieron y murió; y lo sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de David, y Amasías su hijo reinó en su lugar^b.

In the seventh year of Jehu, ^1aJehoash became king, and he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. 2 Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the LORD all his days that Jehoiada the priest instructed him. 3 Only ^athe high places did not end; the people still sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.

4 Then Jehoash said to the priests, “All the money of the sacred offerings ^awhich is brought into the house of the LORD, in current money, both ^bthe money of each man’s assessment and all the money ¹which anyone’s heart prompts him to bring into the house of the LORD, 5 the priests are to take it for themselves, each from his ¹acquaintance; and they shall repair ²damage to the house wherever ³any damage is found.”

6 But it came about that in the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, ^athe priests had not repaired any damage to the house. 7 So King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest, and the other priests, and said to them, “Why do you not repair damage to the house? Now then, you are not to take any more money from your ¹acquaintances, but give it up for the damage to the house.” 8 The priests then agreed that they would not take any more money from the people, nor would they ¹repair damage to the house.

9 Instead, ^aJehoiada the priest ¹took a chest and drilled a hole in its lid and put it beside the altar, on the right side as one comes into the house of the LORD; and the priests who guarded the threshold put in it all the money that was brought into the house of the LORD. 10 When they saw that there was a great amount of money in the chest, ^athe king’s scribe and the high priest went up and tied it up in bags, and counted the money that was found in the house of the LORD. 11 And they handed the money which was assessed over to those who did the work, who had the oversight of the house of the LORD; and they ¹paid it out to the carpenters and the builders who worked on the house of the LORD; 12 and ^ato the masons and the stonecutters, and for buying timber and cut stone to repair the damage to the house of the LORD, and for everything that ¹was laid out for the house to repair it. 13 However ^athere were not made for the house of the LORD ^bsilver cups, shears, bowls, trumpets, any receptacles of gold, or receptacles of silver from the money which was brought into the house of the LORD; 14 for they gave that to those who did the work, and with it they repaired the house of the LORD. 15 Moreover, ^athey did not require an accounting from the men into whose hands they gave the money to pay to those who did the work, because they acted faithfully. 16 The ^amoney from the guilt offerings and ^bthe money from the sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD; ^cit belonged to the priests.

17 Then ^aHazael the king of Aram went up and fought against Gath and captured it, and ^bHazael ¹was intent on going up against Jerusalem. 18 So ^aJehoash king of Judah took all the sacred offerings that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had consecrated, and ^bhis own sacred offerings, and all the gold that was found among the treasuries of the house of the LORD and of the king’s house, and sent them to Hazael king of Aram. Then he withdrew from Jerusalem.

19 Now as for the rest of the acts of Joash and everything that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah? 20 And ^ahis servants rose up and formed a conspiracy; and they ^bstruck and killed Joash at ^cthe house of Millo as he was going down to Silla. 21 For Jozacar the son of Shimeath and Jehozabad the son of ^aShomer, his servants, struck him and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and his son ^bAmaziah became king in his place.
