^aEn el año dieciocho del rey Jeroboam, Abías comenzó a reinar sobre Judá. 2 Reinó tres años en Jerusalén; y el nombre de su madre era Micaías, hija de Uriel¹, de Guibeá. Y hubo guerra entre Abías y Jeroboam^a. 3 Y Abías comenzó la batalla con un ejército de valientes guerreros, cuatrocientos mil hombres escogidos, mientras que Jeroboam se puso en orden de batalla contra él con ochocientos mil hombres escogidos, valientes y fuertes.

4 Entonces Abías se levantó en el monte Zemaraim^a que está en la región montañosa de Efraín, y dijo: Escuchadme, Jeroboam y todo Israel: 5 ¿No sabéis que el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel, dio a David el reino sobre Israel para siempre, a él y a sus hijos^a con pacto de sal^b? 6 Pero Jeroboam, hijo de Nabat, siervo de Salomón^a, hijo de David, se alzó y se rebeló contra su señor, 7 y se juntaron con él hombres indignos y malvados que prevalecieron sobre Roboam^a, hijo de Salomón, cuando Roboam era joven y tímido, y no pudo prevalecer contra ellos. 8 Y ahora vosotros intentáis resistir al reinado del SEÑOR que está en manos de los hijos de David, porque sois una gran multitud y tenéis con vosotros los becerros de oro que Jeroboam os hizo por dioses^a. 9 ¿No habéis echado fuera a los sacerdotes del SEÑOR, los hijos de Aarón y los levitas, y os habéis hecho sacerdotes^a como los pueblos de otras tierras? Cualquiera que venga a consagrarse^b con un novillo y siete carneros, auneste puede llegar a ser sacerdote de los que no son dioses^c. 10 Mas en cuanto a nosotros, el SEÑOR es nuestro Dios y no le hemos abandonado; y los hijos de Aarón sirven al SEÑOR como sacerdotes, y los levitas en sus funciones. 11 Y cada mañana y cada tarde queman holocaustos e incienso aromático al SEÑOR; y el pan^a está colocado sobre la mesa limpia, y el candelabro de oro con sus lámparas para ser encendidas cada tarde^b; porque nosotros guardamos la ordenanza del SEÑOR nuestro Dios, pero vosotros le habéis abandonado. 12 Y he aquí, Dios está con nosotros a la cabeza, y sus sacerdotes con las trompetas de aviso para tocar la alarma contra vosotros^a. ¡Oh hijos de Israel!, no luchéis contra el SEÑOR, Dios de vuestros padres, porque nada lograréis.

13 Pero Jeroboam había puesto una emboscada para llegar a ellos por detrás, de manera que Israel estaba frente a Judá, y la emboscada estaba detrás deestos^a. 14 Cuando Judá se volvió, he aquí que eran atacados por delante y por detrás¹. Clamaron, pues, al SEÑOR^a, y los sacerdotes tocaron las trompetas. 15 Entonces los hombres de Judá lanzaron el grito de guerra; y sucedió que mientras los hombres de Judá lanzaban el grito de guerra, Dios hirió a Jeroboam y a todo Israel delante de Abías y de Judá^a. 16 Y huyeron los hijos de Israel delante de Judá, y Dios los entregó en sus manos^a. 17 Y Abías y su gente los derrotaron con una gran matanza, y cayeron muertos quinientos mil hombres escogidos de Israel. 18 Así los hijos de Israel fueron humillados en aquel tiempo, y los hijos de Judá prevalecieron porque se apoyaron en el SEÑOR^a, Dios de sus padres. 19 Y Abías persiguió a Jeroboam, y le tomó varias ciudades, Betel con sus aldeas, Jesana con sus aldeas y Efraín¹ con sus aldeas. 20 Jeroboam no volvió a recuperar poder en los días de Abías; y el SEÑOR lo hirió, y murió^a.

21 Abías se hizo poderoso, y tomó para sí catorce mujeres; y engendró a veintidós hijos y dieciséis hijas. 22 Y los demás hechos de Abías, y sus caminos y sus palabras están escritos en la historia^1a del profeta Iddo^b.

^aIn the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah. 2 He reigned in Jerusalem for three years; and his mother’s name was ¹Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.

^aNow there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3 Abijah began the battle with an army of warriors, four hundred thousand chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in battle formation against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men who were valiant warriors.

4 Then Abijah stood on Mount ^aZemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel: 5 Do you not know that ^athe LORD God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David ¹and his sons by ^ba covenant of salt? 6 Yet ^aJeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his ¹master, 7 and worthless men gathered to him, wicked men, who proved too strong for Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, when ^1ahe was young and timid and could not hold his own against them.

8 “So now you intend to assert yourselves against the kingdom of the LORD ¹through the sons of David, ²being a great multitude and having with you ^athe golden calves which Jeroboam made for you as gods. 9 ^aHave you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes ^bto consecrate himself with a bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of things that are ^cnot gods. 10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not abandoned Him; and the sons of Aaron are ministering to the LORD as priests, and the Levites ¹attend to their work. 11 Every morning and evening ^athey ¹burn to the LORD burnt offerings and fragrant incense, and ^bthe showbread is set on the clean table, and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening; for we perform our duty to the LORD our God, but you have abandoned Him. 12 Now behold, God is with us at our head, and ^aHis priests with the signal trumpets to sound the war cry against you. Sons of Israel, do not fight against the LORD God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”

13 But Jeroboam ^ahad set an ambush to come from behind, so that Israel was in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them. 14 When Judah turned around, behold, ¹they were attacked both from front and rear; so ^athey cried out to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets. 15 Then the men of Judah raised a war cry, and when the men of Judah raised the war cry, God ^1adefeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 When the sons of Israel fled from Judah, ^aGod handed them over to them. 17 Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell slain. 18 The sons of Israel were subdued at that time, and the sons of Judah ¹conquered ^abecause they trusted in the LORD, the God of their fathers. 19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured from him several cities, Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and ¹Ephron with its villages.

20 Jeroboam did not again recover strength in the days of Abijah; and the ^aLORD struck him and ^bhe died.

21 But Abijah became powerful, and he took fourteen wives for himself, and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his words are written in ^athe ¹treatise of ^bIddo the prophet.
