Entonces Samuel dijo a todo Israel: He aquí, yo he escuchado vuestra voz en todo lo que me dijisteis^a, y he puesto rey sobre vosotros^b. 2 Y he aquí, ahora el rey va delante de vosotros^a. Yo ya soy viejo y lleno de canas^b, y he aquí, mis hijos están con vosotros^c. Yo he andado delante de vosotros desde mi juventud hasta hoy^d. 3 Aquí estoy; testificad contra mí delante del SEÑOR y delante de su ungido^a. ¿A quién he quitado¹ buey, o a quién he quitado² asno, o a quién he defraudado^b? ¿A quién he oprimido, o de mano de quién he tomado soborno para cegar mis ojos con él^c? Testificad, y os lo restituiré. 4 Y ellos dijeron: Tú no nos has defraudado ni oprimido, ni has tomado nada de mano de ningún hombre. 5 Y él les respondió: El SEÑOR es testigo contra vosotros, y su ungido es testigo en este día^a que nada habéis hallado en mi mano^b. Y ellos dijeron: Él es testigo.

6 Entonces Samuel dijo al pueblo: El SEÑOR es el que designó¹ a Moisés y a Aarón, y el que sacó a vuestros padres de la tierra de Egipto^a. 7 Ahora pues, presentaos para que yo argumente con vosotros delante del SEÑOR acerca de todos los hechos de justicia del SEÑOR que Él ha hecho por vosotros y por vuestros padres^a. 8 Cuando Jacob fue a Egipto^a y vuestros padres clamaron al SEÑOR^b, el SEÑOR envió a Moisés y a Aarón^c, quienes¹ sacaron a vuestros padres de Egipto y los establecieron² en este lugar^d. 9 Pero ellos olvidaron al SEÑOR su Dios^a, y Él los vendió en manos de Sísara, jefe del ejército de Hazor^b, en manos de los filisteos^c y en manos del rey de Moab^d, los cuales¹ pelearon contra ellos. 10 Y clamaron al SEÑOR^a, y dijeron: «Hemos pecado porque hemos dejado al SEÑOR y hemos servido a los baales y a Astarot^b; pero ahora, líbranos de la mano de nuestros enemigos, y te serviremos^c». 11 Entonces el SEÑOR envió a Jerobaal^a, a Bedán^1b, a Jefté^c y a Samuel^d, y os libró de la mano de vuestros enemigos en derredor, de manera que habitasteis con seguridad. 12 Cuando visteis que Nahas^a, rey de los hijos de Amón, venía contra vosotros, me dijisteis: «No, sino que un rey ha de reinar sobre nosotros^b», aunque el SEÑOR vuestro Dios era vuestro rey^c. 13 Ahora pues, aquí está el rey que habéis escogido^a, a quien habéis pedido; he aquí que el SEÑOR ha puesto rey sobre vosotros^b. 14 Si teméis al SEÑOR y le servís, escucháis su voz y no os rebeláis contra el mandamiento¹ del SEÑOR, entonces vosotros, como el rey que reine sobre vosotros, estaréis siguiendo al SEÑOR vuestro Dios^a. 15 Pero si no escucháis la voz del SEÑOR, sino que os rebeláis contra el mandamiento¹ del SEÑOR^a, entonces la mano del SEÑOR estará contra vosotros^b, como estuvo contra vuestros padres^c. 16 Presentaos ahora, y ved esta gran cosa que el SEÑOR hará delante de vuestros ojos^a. 17 ¿No es ahora¹ la siega del trigo^a? Yo clamaré al SEÑOR, para que mande truenos² y lluvia^b. Entonces conoceréis y veréis que es grande la maldad que habéis hecho ante los ojos del SEÑOR, al pedir para vosotros un rey^c. 18 Clamó Samuel al SEÑOR, y el SEÑOR envió aquel día truenos¹ y lluvia; y todo el pueblo temió grandemente al SEÑOR y a Samuel^a.

19 Entonces todo el pueblo dijo a Samuel: Ruega por tus siervos al SEÑOR tu Dios para que no muramos^a, porque hemos añadido este mal a todos nuestros pecados al pedir para nosotros un rey^b. 20 Y Samuel dijo al pueblo: No temáis; aunque vosotros habéis hecho todo este mal, no os apartéis de seguir al SEÑOR, sino servid al SEÑOR con todo vuestro corazón^a. 21 No os debéis apartar, porque entonces iríais tras vanidades que ni aprovechan ni libran, pues son vanidades^a. 22 Porque el SEÑOR, a causa de su gran nombre^a, no desamparará a su pueblo^b, pues el SEÑOR se ha complacido en haceros pueblo suyo^c. 23 Y en cuanto a mí, lejos esté de mí que peque contra el SEÑOR cesando de orar por vosotros^a, antes bien, os instruiré en el camino bueno y recto^b. 24 Solamente temed al SEÑOR y servidle en verdad con todo vuestro corazón^a; pues habéis visto cuán grandes cosas ha hecho por vosotros^b. 25 Mas si perseveráis en hacer mal^a, vosotros y vuestro rey^b pereceréis^c.

Then Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, ^aI have listened to your voice for all that you said to me, and I ^bhave appointed a king over you. 2 Now, ^ahere is the king walking before you, but as for me, ^bI am old and gray, and ^cmy sons are here with you. And ^dI have walked before you since my youth to this day. 3 Here I am; testify against me before the LORD and ^aHis anointed. ^bWhose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed, or ^cfrom whose hand have I taken a bribe to close my eyes with it? I will return it to you.” 4 And they said, “You have not exploited us or oppressed us, or taken anything from anyone’s hand.” 5 So he said to them, “The LORD is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day that ^ayou have found nothing ^bin my hand.” And they said, “He is witness.”

6 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the LORD who ^1aappointed Moses and Aaron and who brought your fathers up from the land of Egypt. 7 Now then, take your stand, ^aso that I may enter into judgment with you before the LORD concerning all the righteous acts of the LORD that He did for you and your fathers. 8 ^aWhen Jacob went into Egypt and ^byour fathers cried out to the LORD, then ^cthe LORD sent Moses and Aaron ^1dwho brought your fathers out of Egypt and settled them in this place. 9 But ^athey forgot the LORD their God, so ^bHe sold them into the hand of Sisera, commander of the army of Hazor, and ^cinto the hand of the Philistines, and ^dinto the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them. 10 ^aThey cried out to the LORD and said, ‘We have sinned, because we have abandoned the LORD and have served ^bthe Baals and the Ashtaroth; but ^cnow save us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve You.’ 11 Then the LORD sent ^aJerubbaal, ^1bBedan, ^cJephthah, and ^dSamuel, and saved you from the hands of your enemies all around, so that you lived in security.

12 But when you saw ^athat Nahash the king of the sons of Ammon was coming against you, you said to me, ‘^bNo, but a king shall reign over us!’ ^cYet the LORD your God was your king. 13 And now, ^abehold, the king whom you have chosen, ^bwhom you have asked for, and behold, the LORD has ¹put a king over you. 14 ^aIf you will fear the LORD and serve Him, and listen to His voice and not rebel against the ¹command of the LORD, then both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God. 15 But ^aif you do not listen to the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the ¹command of the LORD, then ^bthe hand of the LORD will be against you, ^ceven as it was against your fathers. 16 Even now, ^atake your stand and see this great thing which the LORD is going to do before your eyes. 17 ^aIs it not the wheat harvest today? ^bI will call to the LORD, that He will send ¹thunder and rain. Then you will know and see that ^cyour wickedness is great which you have done in the sight of the LORD, by asking for yourselves a king.” 18 So Samuel called to the LORD, and the LORD sent ¹thunder and rain that day; and ^aall the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

19 Then all the people said to Samuel, “^aPray to the LORD your God for your servants, so that we do not die; for we have added to all our sins ^bthis evil, by asking for ourselves a king.” 20 Samuel said to the people, “Do not fear. You have committed all this evil, yet ^ado not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. 21 Indeed, you must not turn aside, for then you would go after ^auseless things which cannot benefit or save, because they are useless. 22 For ^athe LORD will not abandon His people ^bon account of His great name, because the LORD ^chas been pleased to make you a people for Himself. 23 Furthermore, as for me, ^afar be it from me that I would sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you; but ^bI will instruct you in the good and right way. 24 ^aOnly ¹fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider ^bwhat great things He has done for you. 25 ^aBut if you still do evil, ^bboth you and your king ^cwill be swept away.”
