Salomón se emparentó con Faraón, rey de Egipto, pues tomó la hija de Faraón y la trajo a la ciudad de David^a mientras acababa de edificar su casa, la casa del SEÑOR^b y la muralla alrededor de Jerusalén^c. 2 Solo que el pueblo sacrificaba en los lugares altos^a, porque en aquellos días aún no se había edificado casa al nombre del SEÑOR.

3 ^aSalomón amaba al SEÑOR^b, andando en los estatutos de su padre David^c, aunque¹ sacrificaba y quemaba incienso en los lugares altos. 4 El rey fue a Gabaón^a a sacrificar allí, porque ese era el lugar alto principal^b. Salomón ofreció mil holocaustos sobre ese altar. 5 Y en Gabaón el SEÑOR se apareció a Salomón^a de noche en sueños^b, y Dios le dijo: Pide lo que quieras que yo te dé^c. 6 Entonces Salomón dijo: Tú has usado de gran misericordia con tu siervo David mi padre^a, según él anduvo delante de ti con fidelidad, justicia y rectitud de corazón hacia ti^b; y has guardado para él esta gran misericordia, en que le has dado un hijo que se siente en su trono, como sucede hoy^c. 7 Y ahora, SEÑOR Dios mío, has hecho a tu siervo rey en lugar de mi padre David^a, aunque soy un muchacho^b y no sé cómo salir ni entrar^c. 8 Tu siervo está en medio de tu pueblo al cual escogiste^a, un pueblo inmenso que no se puede numerar ni contar por su multitud^b. 9 Da, pues, a tu siervo un corazón con entendimiento¹ para juzgar a tu pueblo y para discernir entre el bien y el mal^a. Pues ¿quién será capaz de juzgar a este pueblo tuyo tan grande^2b?

10 Y fue¹ del agrado a los ojos del Señor que Salomón pidiera esto. 11 Y Dios le dijo: Porque has pedido esto y no has pedido para ti larga vida^1a, ni has pedido para ti riquezas, ni has pedido la vida de tus enemigos, sino que has pedido para ti inteligencia para administrar² justicia, 12 he aquí, he hecho conforme a tus palabras^a. He aquí, te he dado un corazón sabio y entendido, de modo que no ha habido ninguno como tú antes de ti, ni se levantará ninguno como tú después de ti^b. 13 También te he dado lo que no has pedido, tanto riquezas como gloria^a, de modo que no habrá entre los reyes ninguno como tú en todos tus días^b. 14 Y si andas en mis caminos, guardando mis estatutos y mis mandamientos como tu padre David anduvo, entonces prolongaré tus días^a.

15 Salomón se despertó y vio que había sido un sueño^a. Entró en Jerusalén y se puso delante del arca del pacto del SEÑOR; ofreció holocaustos e hizo ofrendas de paz, y también dio un banquete para todos sus siervos^b.

16 Por ese tiempo dos mujeres que eran rameras, vinieron al rey y se presentaron delante de él. 17 Y una de las mujeres dijo: Oh, mi señor, yo y esta mujer vivimos en la misma casa; y yo di a luz estando con ella en la casa. 18 Y sucedió que al tercer día después de dar yo a luz, esta mujer también dio a luz; estábamos juntas, nadie de fuera estaba con nosotras en la casa, solamente nosotras dos¹. 19 Y el hijo de esta mujer murió durante la noche, porque ella se durmió sobre él. 20 Entonces ella se levantó a medianoche, tomó a mi hijo de mi lado mientras tu sierva estaba dormida y lo puso en su regazo, y a su hijo muerto lo puso en mi regazo. 21 Cuando me levanté al amanecer para dar el pecho a mi hijo, he aquí que estaba muerto; pero cuando lo observé con cuidado por la mañana, vi que no era mi hijo, el que yo había dado a luz. 22 Entonces la otra mujer dijo: No, pues mi hijo es el que vive y tu hijo es el muerto. Pero la primera mujer dijo¹: No, tu hijo es el muerto y mi hijo es el que vive. Así hablaban ellas delante del rey.

23 Entonces el rey dijo: Esta dice: «Este es mi hijo que está vivo y tu hijo es el muerto»; y la otra¹ dice: «No, porque tu hijo es el muerto y mi hijo es el que vive». 24 Y el rey dijo: Traedme una espada. Y trajeron una espada al rey. 25 Entonces el rey dijo: Partid al niño vivo en dos, y dad la mitad a una y la otra mitad a la otra. 26 Entonces la mujer de quien era el niño vivo habló al rey, pues estaba profundamente conmovida^1a por su hijo, y dijo: Oh, mi señor, dale a ella el niño vivo, y de ninguna manera lo mates. Pero la otra decía: No será ni mío ni tuyo; partidlo. 27 Entonces el rey respondió y dijo: Dad el niño vivo a la primera mujer¹, y de ninguna manera lo matéis. Ella es la madre. 28 Cuando todo Israel oyó del juicio que el rey había pronunciado¹, temieron al rey, porque vieron que la sabiduría de Dios estaba en él para administrar² justicia^a.

Now ^aSolomon ¹formed a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter ^band brought her to the city of David ^cuntil he had finished building his own house and the house of the LORD, and ^dthe wall around Jerusalem. 2 ^aThe people were still sacrificing on the high places, because there was no house built for the name of the LORD until those days.

3 Now ^aSolomon loved the LORD, ^bwalking in the statutes of his father David, except that he was sacrificing and burning incense on the high places. 4 And ^athe king went to ^bGibeon to sacrifice there, ^cbecause that was the great high place; Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 5 ^aIn Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon ^bin a dream at night; and God said, “^cAsk what you wish Me to give you.”

6 Then Solomon said, “^aYou have shown great faithfulness to Your servant David my father, ^baccording as he walked before You in ¹truth, righteousness, and uprightness of heart toward You; and ^cYou have ²reserved for him this great faithfulness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 And now, LORD my God, ^aYou have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet ^bI am like a little boy; ^cI do not know how to ¹go out or come in. 8 And ^aYour servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, ^ba great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. 9 So ^agive Your servant ¹an understanding heart to judge Your people, ^bto discern between good and evil. For who is capable of judging this ²great people of Yours?”

10 Now ¹it was pleasing in the sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing. 11 And God said to him, “Because you have asked this thing, and have ^anot asked for yourself ¹a long life, nor have asked riches for yourself, nor have you asked for the lives of your enemies, but have asked for yourself discernment to understand justice, 12 behold, ^aI have done according to your words. Behold, ^bI have given you a wise and discerning heart, so that there has been no one like you before you, nor shall one like you arise after you. 13 ^aI have also given you what you have not asked, both ^briches and honor, so that there will not be any among the kings like you all your days. 14 And ^aif you walk in My ways, keeping My statutes and commandments, as your father David walked, then I will ^bprolong your days.”

15 Then ^aSolomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. And he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and made peace offerings, and ^bheld a feast for all his servants.

16 Then two women who were prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. 17 The one woman said, “Pardon me, my lord: ¹this woman and I live in the same house; and I gave birth to a child ²while she was in the house. 18 And it happened on the third day after I gave birth, that this woman also gave birth to a child, and we were together. There was no stranger with us in the house, only the two of us in the house. 19 Then this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while your servant was asleep, and she laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. 21 When I got up in the morning to nurse my son, behold, he was dead! But when I examined him closely in the morning, behold, he was not my son, whom I had borne!” 22 Then the other woman said, “No! For the living one is my son, and the dead one is your son.” But ¹the first woman said, “No! For the dead one is your son, and the living one is my son.” So they spoke before the king.

23 Then the king said, “¹The one says, ‘This is my son who is living, and your son is the dead one’; and ²the other says, ‘No! For your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’” 24 And the king said, “Get me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. 25 And the king said, “Cut the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.” 26 But the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for ^1ashe was deeply stirred over her son, and she said, “Pardon me, my lord! Give her the living child, and by no means kill him!” But the other woman was saying, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; cut him!” 27 Then the king replied, “Give ¹the first woman the living child, and by no means kill him. She is his mother.” 28 When all Israel heard about the judgment which the king had ¹handed down, they feared the king, because ^athey saw that the wisdom of God was in him to ²administer justice.
