Y aconteció que al cabo de dos años¹, Faraón tuvo un sueño; y he aquí, soñó que estaba de pie junto al Nilo. 2 Y de pronto¹, del Nilo subieron siete vacas de hermoso aspecto y gordas², y pacían en el carrizal^a. 3 Pero he aquí, otras siete vacas de mal aspecto y flacas¹ subieron del Nilo detrás de ellas, y se pararon junto a las otras vacas a la orilla del Nilo; 4 y las vacas de mal aspecto y flacas¹ devoraron las siete vacas de hermoso aspecto y gordas. Entonces Faraón despertó. 5 Se quedó dormido y soñó por segunda vez; y he aquí que siete espigas llenas y buenas crecían en una sola caña. 6 Y he aquí que siete espigas, menudas y quemadas por el viento solano, brotaron después deaquellas. 7 Y las espigas menudas devoraron a las siete espigas gruesas y llenas. Entonces Faraón despertó, y he aquí, era un sueño. 8 Y sucedió que por la mañana su espíritu estaba turbado^a, y mandó llamar a todos los adivinos¹ de Egipto^b, y a todos sus sabios^c. Y Faraón les contó sus sueños², pero no hubo quien se los pudiera interpretar a Faraón^d.

9 Entonces el jefe de los coperos habló a Faraón, diciendo: Quisiera hablar hoy de mis faltas^1a. 10 Cuando Faraón se enojó con sus siervos y me puso bajo custodia en la casa del capitán de la guardia, a mí y al jefe de los panaderos^a, 11 él y yo tuvimos¹ un sueño en una misma noche; cada uno de nosotros soñó según la interpretación de su propio sueño^a. 12 Y estaba allí con nosotros un joven hebreo, un siervo del capitán de la guardia^a; y se los contamos, y él nos interpretó los sueños. A cada uno interpretó su¹ sueño^b. 13 Y aconteció que tal como nos lo había interpretado, así sucedió; a mí me restableció Faraón en mi puesto, pero al otro¹ lo ahorcó^a.

14 Entonces Faraón mandó llamar a José^a, y lo sacaron aprisa del calabozo¹; y después de afeitarse y cambiarse sus vestidos, vino a Faraón^b. 15 Y Faraón dijo a José: He tenido¹ un sueño y no hay quien lo interprete^a; y he oído decir de ti², que oyes un sueño y lo puedes interpretar^3b. 16 José respondió a Faraón, diciendo: No está en mí^a; Dios dará a Faraón una respuesta favorable^1b. 17 Entonces habló Faraón a José: En mi sueño, he aquí, yo estaba de pie a la orilla del Nilo. 18 Y vi¹ siete vacas gordas² y de hermoso aspecto que salieron del Nilo; y pacían en el carrizal. 19 Pero he aquí, otras siete vacas subieron detrás de ellas, pobres, de muy mal aspecto y flacas¹, de tal fealdad² como yo nunca había visto en toda la tierra de Egipto. 20 Y las vacas flacas y feas¹ devoraron las primeras siete vacas gordas. 21 Pero cuando las habían devorado¹, no se podía notar² que las hubieran devorado³; pues⁴ su aspecto era tan feo⁵ como al principio. Entonces me desperté. 22 Y he aquí, en mi sueño también vi que siete espigas llenas y buenas crecían en una sola caña. 23 Y he aquí que siete espigas marchitas, menudas y quemadas por el viento solano, brotaron después deaquellas; 24 y las espigas menudas devoraron a las siete espigas buenas. Y se lo conté a los adivinos¹, pero no hubo quien me lo pudiera explicar^a.

25 Entonces José dijo a Faraón: Los dos sueños de Faraón son¹ uno; Dios ha anunciado a Faraón lo que Él va a hacer^a. 26 Las siete vacas buenas son siete años, y las siete espigas buenas son siete años; los dos sueños son¹ uno. 27 Y las siete vacas flacas y feas¹ que subieron detrás de ellas son siete años, y las siete espigas quemadas por el viento solano serán siete años de hambre^a. 28 Esto es lo que he dicho a Faraón: Dios ha mostrado a Faraón lo que va a hacer^a. 29 He aquí, vienen siete años de gran abundancia en toda la tierra de Egipto^a; 30 y después de ellos vendrán¹ siete años de hambre^a, y será olvidada toda la abundancia en la tierra de Egipto; y el hambre asolará² la tierra. 31 Y no se conocerá la abundancia en la tierra a causa del hambre que vendrá¹, que será muy severa. 32 Y en cuanto a la repetición del sueño a Faraón dos veces, quiere decir que el asunto está determinado por Dios^a, y Dios lo hará pronto. 33 Ahora pues, busque Faraón un hombre prudente y sabio^a, y póngalo sobre la tierra de Egipto. 34 Haga esto Faraón: nombre intendentes sobre el país y exija un quinto de la producción de la tierra de Egipto en los siete años de abundancia. 35 Y que ellos recojan todos los víveres de esos años buenos que vienen, y almacenen en las ciudades^a el grano para alimento bajo la autoridad¹ de Faraón, y que lo protejan. 36 Y que los víveres sean una reserva para el país durante los siete años de hambre que ocurrirán en la tierra de Egipto, a fin de que el país no perezca durante el hambre.

37 Y la idea¹ pareció bien a² Faraón y a³ todos sus siervos. 38 Entonces Faraón dijo a sus siervos: ¿Podemos hallar un hombre comoeste, en quien esté el espíritu de Dios^a? 39 Y Faraón dijo a José: Puesto que Dios te ha hecho saber todo esto, no hay nadie tan prudente ni tan sabio como tú^a. 40 Tú estarás sobre mi casa, y todo mi pueblo obedecerá tus órdenes¹; solamente en el trono yo seré mayor que tú^a. 41 Faraón dijo también a José: Mira, te he puesto sobre toda la tierra de Egipto^a. 42 Y Faraón se quitó el anillo de sellar de su mano^a y lo puso en la mano de José; y lo vistió con vestiduras de lino fino y puso un collar de oro en su cuello^b. 43 Lo hizo montar en su segundo carro¹, y proclamaron delante de él: ¡Doblad la rodilla²! Y lo puso sobre toda la tierra de Egipto. 44 Entonces Faraón dijo a José: Aunque yo soy Faraón, sin embargo, nadie levantará su mano ni su pie sin tu permiso^1a en toda la tierra de Egipto. 45 Y Faraón llamó a José por el nombre de Zafnat-panea¹, y le dio por mujer a Asenat, hija de Potifera, sacerdote de On^2a. Y salió José por toda la tierra de Egipto.

46 José tenía treinta años^a cuando se presentó ante¹ Faraón, rey de Egipto. Y salió José de la presencia de Faraón y recorrió toda la tierra de Egipto. 47 Y produjo la tierra a manos llenas durante los siete años de abundancia. 48 Y él recogió todo el fruto¹ de estos siete años de abundancia² que hubo en la tierra de Egipto, y guardó³ el alimento en las ciudades; y guardó⁴ en cada ciudad el fruto⁵ de sus campos circunvecinos. 49 Así José almacenó grano en gran abundancia, como la arena del mar, hasta que dejó de medirlo¹ porque no se podía medir².

50 Y le nacieron a José dos hijos^a antes de que llegaran los años¹ de hambre, los que le dio a luz Asenat, hija de Potifera, sacerdote de On². 51 Y al primogénito José le puso el nombre de Manasés¹, porque dijo: Dios me ha hecho olvidar todo mi trabajo y toda la casa de mi padre. 52 Y al segundo le puso el nombre de Efraín¹, porque dijo: Dios me ha hecho fecundo^a en la tierra de mi aflicción.

53 Cuando pasaron los siete años de abundancia que había habido en la tierra de Egipto, 54 y comenzaron a venir los siete años de hambre^a, tal como José había dicho, entonces hubo hambre en todas las tierras; pero en toda la tierra de Egipto había pan. 55 Cuando se sintió el hambre en toda la tierra de Egipto, el pueblo clamó a Faraón por pan; y Faraón dijo a todos los egipcios: Id a José, y haced lo que él os diga^a. 56 Y el hambre se extendió¹ sobre toda la faz de la tierra. Entonces José abrió todos los graneros² y vendió a los egipcios, pues el hambre era severa en la tierra de Egipto. 57 Y de todos los países venían a Egipto para comprar grano a José, porque el hambre era severa en toda la tierra^a.

Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing by the Nile. 2 And behold, from the Nile seven cows came up, fine-looking and ¹fat; and they grazed in the ^amarsh grass. 3 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them from the Nile, ugly and ¹thin, and they stood by the other cows on the bank of the Nile. 4 Then the ugly and ¹thin cows ate the seven fine-looking and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke. 5 But he fell asleep and dreamed a second time; and behold, seven ears of grain came up on a single stalk, plump and good. 6 Then behold, seven ears, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted up after them. 7 And the thin ears swallowed the seven plump and full ears. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream. 8 Now in the morning ^ahis spirit was troubled, so he sent messengers and called for all the ^bsoothsayer priests of Egypt, and all its ^cwise men. And Pharaoh told them his ¹dreams, but ^dthere was no one who could interpret them for Pharaoh.

9 Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, “I would make mention today of ^amy own ¹offenses. 10 Pharaoh was ^afurious with his servants, and ^bhe put me in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, both me and the chief baker. 11 Then ^awe had a dream one night, ¹he and I; each of us dreamed according to the interpretation of his own dream. 12 Now a Hebrew youth was there with us, a ^aservant of the captain of the bodyguard, and we told him the dreams, and ^bhe interpreted our dreams for us. For each man he interpreted according to his own dream. 13 And just ^aas he interpreted for us, so it happened; Pharaoh restored me in my office, but he hanged ¹the chief baker.”

14 Then Pharaoh sent word and ^acalled for Joseph, and they ^bhurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh. 15 Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I have had a dream, ^abut no one can interpret it; and ^bI have heard ¹it said about you, that ²when you hear a dream you can interpret it.” 16 Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “^1aIt has nothing to do with me; ^bGod will ²give Pharaoh an answer for his own good.” 17 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “In my dream, there I was, standing on the bank of the Nile; 18 and behold, seven cows, ¹fat and fine-looking came up out of the Nile, and they grazed in the marsh grass. 19 Then behold, seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ¹ugly and ²thin, such as I had never seen for ³ugliness in all the land of Egypt; 20 and the thin and ugly cows ate the first seven fat cows. 21 Yet when they had ¹devoured them, it could not be ²detected that they had ³devoured them, ⁴for they were just as ugly as ⁵before. Then I awoke. 22 I saw also in my dream, and behold, seven ears of grain, full and good, came up on a single stalk; 23 and behold, seven ears, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind sprouted up after them; 24 and the thin ears swallowed the seven good ears. Then ^aI told it to the soothsayer priests, but there was no one who could explain it to me.”

25 And Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s ¹dreams are one and the same; ^aGod has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do. 26 The seven good cows are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years; the ¹dreams are one and the same. 27 The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind ^awill be seven years of famine. 28 ¹It is as I have spoken to Pharaoh: ^aGod has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. 29 Behold, ^aseven years of great abundance are coming in all the land of Egypt; 30 and after them ^aseven years of famine will ¹come, and all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt, and the famine will ²ravage the land. 31 So the abundance will be unknown in the land because of that subsequent famine; for it will be very severe. 32 Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that ^athe matter is confirmed by God, and God will quickly bring it about. 33 So now let Pharaoh look for a man ^adiscerning and wise, and appoint him over the land of Egypt. 34 Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers ¹in charge of the land, and let him take a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt as a tax in the seven years of abundance. 35 Then have them ^acollect all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and have them guard it. 36 Let the food be used as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.”

37 Now the ¹proposal seemed good ²to Pharaoh and ³to all his servants.

38 Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, ^ain whom there is a divine spirit?” 39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one as ^adiscerning and wise as you are. 40 ^aYou shall be ¹in charge of my house, and all my people shall ²be obedient to you; only regarding the throne will I be greater than you.” 41 Pharaoh also said to Joseph, “See, I have placed you ^aover all the land of Egypt.” 42 Then Pharaoh ^atook off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen, and ^bput the gold necklace around his neck. 43 And he had him ride in ¹his second chariot; and they proclaimed ahead of him, “²Bow the knee!” And he placed him over all the land of Egypt. 44 Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Though I am Pharaoh, yet ^awithout ¹your permission no one shall raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.” 45 Then Pharaoh named Joseph ¹Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of ^2aOn, to be his wife. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

46 Now Joseph was ^athirty years old when he ¹stood in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and went through all the land of Egypt. 47 During the seven years of plenty the land produced ¹abundantly. 48 So he collected all the food of these seven years which occurred in the land of Egypt and put the food in the cities; he put in every city the food from its own surrounding fields. 49 Joseph stored up grain ¹in great abundance like the sand of the sea, until he stopped ²measuring it, for it was ³beyond measure.

50 Now before the year of famine came, ^atwo sons were born to Joseph, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of ¹On, bore to him. 51 Joseph named the firstborn ¹Manasseh; “For,” he said, “God has made me forget all my trouble and all of my father’s household.” 52 And he named the second ¹Ephraim; “For,” he said, “^aGod has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

53 When the seven years of plenty which had taken place in the land of Egypt came to an end, 54 and ^athe seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said, then there was famine in all the lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. 55 So when all the land of Egypt suffered famine, the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread; and Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, “Go to Joseph; ^awhatever he says to you, you shall do.” 56 When the famine was spread over the entire face of the earth, then Joseph opened all ¹the storehouses and sold grain to the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. 57 Then the people of all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because ^athe famine was severe in all the earth.
