Vanidad de todo esfuerzo

Palabras del Predicador^a, hijo de David, rey en Jerusalén.

2 Vanidad de vanidades, dice el Predicador,vanidad de vanidades, todo es vanidad^a.

3 ¿Qué provecho recibe el hombre de todo el trabajocon que se afana bajo el sol^a?4 Una generación va y otra generación viene,mas la tierra permanece para siempre^a.5 El sol sale y el sol se pone^a,a su lugar se apresura¹, y de allí vuelve a salir.6 Soplando¹ hacia el sur,y girando hacia el norte,girando y girando va el viento;y sobre sus giros el viento regresa^a.7 Todos los ríos van hacia el mar,y el mar no se llena;al lugar donde los ríos fluyen,allí vuelven a fluir.8 Todas las cosas son fatigosas,el hombre no puede expresarlas.No se sacia^a el ojo de ver,ni se cansa¹ el oído de oír.9 Lo que fue, eso será,y lo que se hizo, eso se hará^a;no hay nada nuevo bajo el sol.10 ¿Hay algo de que se pueda decir:Mira, esto es nuevo?Ya existía en los siglosque nos precedieron.11 No hay memoria de las cosas primerasni tampoco de las postreras que sucederán;no habrá memoria de ellasentre los que vendrán después^a.

Vanidad del saber

12 Yo, el Predicador^a, he sido rey sobre Israel en Jerusalén. 13 Y apliqué mi corazón^a a buscar e investigar con sabiduría todo lo que se ha hecho bajo el cielo^b. Tarea^c dolorosa¹ dada por Dios a los hijos de los hombres para ser afligidos con ella. 14 He visto todas las obras que se han hecho bajo el sol, y he aquí, todo es vanidad y correr tras el viento¹^a.

15 Lo torcido no puede enderezarse^a,y lo que falta no se puede contar.

16 Yo me dije¹: He aquí, yo he engrandecido y aumentado la sabiduría más que² todos los que estuvieron antes de mí sobre Jerusalén^a; mi corazón ha contemplado mucha sabiduría y conocimiento. 17 Y apliqué mi corazón^a a conocer la sabiduría y a conocer la locura y la insensatez^b; me di cuenta de que esto también es correr tras el viento^c.

18 Porque en la mucha sabiduría hay mucha angustia,y quien aumenta el conocimiento, aumenta el dolor^a.

The Futility of All Endeavors

The words of the ^aPreacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

2 “^aFutility of futilities,” says the Preacher,“Futility of futilities! All is futility.”

3 ^aWhat advantage does a person have in all his workWhich he does under the sun?4 A generation goes and a generation comes,But the ^aearth ¹remains forever.5 Also, ^athe sun rises and the sun sets;And ¹hurrying to its place it rises there again.6 ¹^aBlowing toward the south,Then turning toward the north,The wind continues ²swirling along;And on its circular courses the wind returns.7 All the rivers ¹flow into the sea,Yet the sea is not full.To the place where the rivers ²flow,There they ³flow again.8 All things are wearisome;No one can tell it.^aThe eye is not satisfied with seeing,Nor is the ear filled with hearing.9 ^aWhat has been, it is what will be,And what has been done, it is what will be done.So there is nothing new under the sun.10 Is there anything of which one might say,“See this, it is new”?It has already existed for agesWhich were before us.11 There is ^ano remembrance of the ¹earlier things,And of the later things as well, which will occur,There will be no remembrance of themAmong those who will come later still.

The Futility of Wisdom

12 I, the ^aPreacher, have been king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I ^aset my ¹mind to seek and ^bexplore by wisdom about everything that has been done under heaven. It is a ²^csorry task with which God has given the sons of mankind to be troubled. 14 I have seen all the works which have been done under the sun, and behold, all is ^afutility and striving after wind. 15 What is ^acrooked cannot be straightened, and what is lacking cannot be counted.

16 I ¹said to myself, “Behold, I have magnified and increased ^awisdom more than all who were over Jerusalem before me; and my ²mind has observed ³a wealth of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 And I ^aapplied my ¹mind to know wisdom and to ^bknow insanity and foolishness; I realized that this also is ^cstriving after wind. 18 Because ^ain much wisdom there is much grief; and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.
