^aAmasías tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó veintinueve años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre era Joadán, de Jerusalén. 2 E hizo lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR, aunque no de todo corazón^a. 3 Y sucedió que una vez afianzado el reino en su mano¹, mató a los siervos suyos que habían asesinado² al rey su padre^a. 4 Pero a sus hijos no les dio muerte, sino que hizo conforme a lo que está escrito en la ley en el libro de Moisés, tal como el SEÑOR ordenó, diciendo: No se dará muerte a los padres por los hijos, ni se dará muerte a los hijos por los padres, sino que a cada uno se le dará muerte por su propio pecado^a.

5 Además, Amasías reunió a Judá, y conforme a sus casas paternas los puso bajo comandantes de miles y comandantes de cientos por todo Judá y Benjamín; e hizo un censo de¹ los de veinte años arriba^a, y halló trescientos mil hombres escogidos^b, hábiles para ir a la guerra y para manejar lanza y escudo. 6 Y tomó a sueldo a cien mil guerreros valientes de Israel por cien talentos de plata. 7 Pero un hombre de Dios vino a él^a, diciendo: Oh rey, no dejes que el ejército de Israel vaya contigo, porque el SEÑOR no está con Israel ni con ninguno de los hijos de Efraín. 8 Pero si tú vas, hazlo, esfuérzate para la batalla; sin embargo Dios te derribará¹ delante del enemigo, porque Dios tiene poder para ayudar y para derribar^2a. 9 Y Amasías dijo al hombre de Dios: ¿Y qué hacer con los cien talentos que he dado a las tropas de Israel? Y el hombre de Dios respondió: El SEÑOR tiene mucho más que darte que esto^a. 10 Entonces Amasías despidió¹ las tropas que vinieron a él de Efraín, para que se fueran a sus casas²; y se encendió en gran manera la ira de ellos contra Judá, y regresaron a sus casas³ ardiendo en ira.

11 Y Amasías se fortaleció, y al frente de su pueblo fue al valle de la Sal y mató a diez mil de los hijos de Seir^a. 12 También los hijos de Judá capturaron vivos a diez mil y los llevaron a la cumbre de la peña, los echaron abajo desde la cumbre de la peña y todos fueron despedazados. 13 Pero las tropas¹ que Amasías había hecho volver para que no fueran con él a la batalla, saquearon las ciudades de Judá desde Samaria hasta Bet-horón, mataron a tres mil de ellos y tomaron mucho botín.

14 Y aconteció que después que Amasías regresó de la matanza de los edomitas, trajo los dioses de los hijos de Seir y los puso como sus dioses^a, se postró delante de ellos y les quemó incienso. 15 Entonces se encendió la ira del SEÑOR contra Amasías, y le envió un profeta que le dijo: ¿Por qué has buscado a los dioses de otro pueblo, que no han podido librar a su propio pueblo de tu mano^a? 16 Y¹ mientras hablaba con él, el rey le dijo: ¿Acaso te hemos constituido consejero real? Detente. ¿Por qué buscas que te maten²? Entonces el profeta se detuvo, y dijo: Yo sé que Dios ha determinado destruirte, porque has hecho esto y no has escuchado mi consejo.

17 ^aEntonces Amasías, rey de Judá, tomó consejo y envió mensajeros a Joás, hijo de Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel, diciendo: Ven, veámonos cara a cara¹. 18 Y Joás, rey de Israel, envió mensaje a Amasías, rey de Judá, diciendo: El cardo que estaba en el Líbano, envió a decir¹ al cedro que estaba en el Líbano, diciendo: «Da tu hija por mujer a mi hijo». Pero pasó una fiera que estaba en el Líbano, y pisoteó el cardo^a. 19 Tú dijiste: «He aquí, he¹ derrotado² a Edom»; y tu corazón se ha envanecido³ para gloriarte. Quédate ahora en tu casa; ¿por qué quieres provocar el mal, de modo que caigas tú y Judá contigo^a? 20 Pero Amasías no quiso escuchar, porque esto venía de Dios, para entregarlos en mano de Joás, pues ellos habían buscado los dioses de Edom. 21 Y subió Joás, rey de Israel, y él y Amasías, rey de Judá, se enfrentaron en Bet-semes, que pertenece a Judá. 22 Y Judá fue derrotado por¹ Israel, y huyeron, cada uno a su tienda. 23 Entonces Joás, rey de Israel, capturó en Bet-semes a Amasías, rey de Judá, hijo de Joás, hijo de Joacaz^a, y lo llevó a Jerusalén; y derribó la muralla de Jerusalén desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta del Angulo, cuatrocientos codos¹. 24 Y tomó todo el oro y la plata, todos los utensilios que se encontraban con Obed-edom^a en la casa de Dios, los tesoros de la casa del rey y también los rehenes, y se volvió a Samaria.

25 ^aY Amasías, hijo de Joás, rey de Judá, vivió quince años después de la muerte de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, rey de Israel. 26 Los demás hechos de Amasías, desde el primero hasta el postrero, he aquí, ¿no están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel? 27 Y desde el día en que Amasías se apartó de seguir al SEÑOR, conspiraron contra él en Jerusalén, y él huyó a Laquis; pero lo persiguieron hasta Laquis y allí lo mataron. 28 Lo trajeron en caballos y lo sepultaron con sus padres en la ciudad de David¹.

^aAmaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. 2 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, ^aonly not wholeheartedly. 3 Now ^ait came about, as soon as the kingdom was ¹firmly in his grasp, that he killed his servants who had killed his father the king. 4 However, he did not put their children to death, but did as it is written in the Law in the Book of Moses, which the LORD commanded, saying, “^aFathers shall not be put to death for sons, nor sons be put to death for fathers; but each shall be put to death for his own sin.”

5 Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah and appointed them according to their fathers’ households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds throughout Judah and Benjamin; and he ¹took a census of those ^afrom twenty years old and upward and found them to be ^bthree hundred thousand choice men, able to go to war and handle spear and shield. 6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for ¹a hundred talents of silver. 7 But ^aa man of God came to him saying, “O king, do not let the army of Israel come with you, for the LORD is not with Israel nor with any of the sons of Ephraim. 8 But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle; yet God will ¹bring you down before the enemy, ^afor God has the power to help and to ²bring down.” 9 Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what are we to do about the ¹hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?” And the man of God answered, “^aThe LORD has much more to give you than this.” 10 Then Amaziah ¹dismissed the troops which came to him from Ephraim, to go home; so their anger burned against Judah, and they returned ²home in fierce anger.

11 Now Amaziah gathered his courage and led his people out, and went to ^athe Valley of Salt, and struck and killed ten thousand of the sons of Seir. 12 The sons of Judah also captured ten thousand alive and brought them to the top of the cliff, and threw them down from the top of the cliff so that they were all dashed to pieces. 13 But the ¹troops whom Amaziah sent back, those not going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck and killed three thousand of them, and plundered a large amount of spoils.

14 Now after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites, ^ahe brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up as his gods. Then he bowed down before them and burned incense to them. 15 So the anger of the LORD burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, “Why have you sought the gods of the people ^awho have not saved their own people from your hand?” 16 As he was talking with him, ¹the king said to him, “Have we appointed you to be a royal counselor? Stop! Why should ²you be put to death?” Then the prophet stopped and said, “I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel.”

17 ^aThen Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, “Come, let’s face each other.” 18 But Joash the king of Israel sent a reply to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, “^aThe thorn bush that was in Lebanon sent word to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son in marriage.’ But a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thorn bush. 19 You said, ‘Behold, you have ¹defeated Edom.’ And ^ayour heart has lifted you up in boasting. Now stay home; why should you provoke trouble so that you, would fall, you and Judah with you?”

20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it was from God, so that He might hand them over to Joash, because they had sought the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh, which belonged to Judah. 22 And Judah was defeated ¹by Israel, and they fled, every man to his tent. 23 Then Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of ^aJehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, ¹four hundred cubits. 24 He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of God with ^aObed-edom, and the treasures of the king’s house, the hostages too, and returned to Samaria.

25 ^aAnd Amaziah, the son of Joash king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from the first to the last, behold, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel? 27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent men after him to Lachish, and they killed him there. 28 Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
