Y Acab le contó a Jezabel todo lo que Elías había hecho y cómo¹ había matado a espada a todos los profetas^a. 2 Entonces Jezabel envió un mensajero a Elías, diciendo: Así me hagan los dioses y aun me añadan^a, si mañana a estas horas yo no he puesto tu vida¹ como la vida² de uno de ellos. 3 Él tuvo miedo¹, y se levantó y se fue para salvar su vida; y vino a Beerseba^a de Judá y dejó allí a su criado. 4 Él anduvo por el desierto un día de camino, y vino y se sentó bajo un enebro¹; pidió morirse^a y dijo: Basta ya, SEÑOR, toma mi vida porque yo no soy mejor que mis padres. 5 Y acostándose bajo el enebro¹, se durmió; y he aquí, un ángel lo tocó^a y le dijo: Levántate, come. 6 Entonces miró, y he aquí que a su cabecera había una torta cocida sobre piedras calientes y una vasija de agua. Comió y bebió, y volvió a acostarse. 7 Y el ángel del SEÑOR volvió por segunda vez, lo tocó y le dijo: Levántate, come, porque es muy largo el camino para ti. 8 Se levantó, pues, y comió y bebió, y con la fuerza de aquella comida caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches^a hasta Horeb, el monte de Dios^b.

9 Allí entró en una cueva y pasó en ella¹ la noche; y he aquí, vino a él la palabra del SEÑOR^a, y Él le dijo: ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías? 10 Y él respondió: He tenido mucho celo por el SEÑOR^a, Dios de los ejércitos; porque los hijos de Israel han abandonado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares y han matado a espada a tus profetas. He quedado yo solo^b y buscan mi vida para quitármela^c. 11 Entonces Él dijo: Sal y ponte en el monte delante del SEÑOR^a. Y he aquí que el SEÑOR pasaba. Y un grande y poderoso viento^b destrozaba los montes y quebraba las peñas delante del SEÑOR; pero el SEÑOR no estaba en el viento. Después del viento, un terremoto; pero el SEÑOR no estaba en el terremoto. 12 Después del terremoto, un fuego; pero el SEÑOR no estaba en el fuego. Y después del fuego, el susurro de una brisa apacible^a. 13 Y sucedió que cuando Elías lo oyó, se cubrió el rostro^a con su manto, y salió y se puso a la entrada de la cueva. Y he aquí, una voz vino a él y le dijo: ¿Qué haces aquí, Elías^b? 14 Y él respondió: He tenido mucho celo por el SEÑOR, Dios de los ejércitos; porque los hijos de Israel han abandonado tu pacto, han derribado tus altares y han matado a espada a tus profetas. He quedado yo solo y buscan mi vida para quitármela^a.

15 Y el SEÑOR le dijo: Ve, regresa por tu camino al desierto de Damasco y cuando hayas llegado, ungirás a Hazael^a por rey sobre Aram; 16 y a Jehú, hijo de Nimsi^a, ungirás por rey sobre Israel; y a Eliseo, hijo de Safat^b de Abel-mehola, ungirás por profeta en tu lugar. 17 Y sucederá que al que escape de la espada de Hazael^a, Jehú lo matará^b, y al que escape de la espada de Jehú, Eliseo lo matará. 18 Pero dejaré siete mil en Israel, todas las rodillas que no se han doblado ante Baal^a y toda boca que no lo ha besado^b.

19 Y partió de allí y encontró a Eliseo, hijo de Safat, que estaba arando con doce yuntas de bueyes delante de él, y él estaba con la última¹. Elías pasó adonde él estaba y le echó su manto encima^a. 20 Dejando él los bueyes, corrió tras Elías, y dijo: Permíteme besar a mi padre y a mi madre, entonces te seguiré^a. Y él le dijo: Ve, vuélvete, pues, ¿qué te he hecho yo? 21 Entonces se volvió, dejando de seguirle, tomó el par de bueyes y los sacrificó, y con los aparejos de los bueyes coció su carne^a, y la dio a la gente y ellos comieron. Después se levantó y fue tras Elías, y le servía.

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, and ^1ahow he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “^aSo may the gods do to me and more so, if by about this time tomorrow I do not make your ¹life like the ²life of one of them.” 3 And he ¹was afraid, and got up and ran for his ²life and came to ^aBeersheba, which belongs to Judah; and he left his servant there. 4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a broom tree; and ^ahe asked for himself to die, and said, “Enough! Now, LORD, take my ¹life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5 Then he lay down and fell asleep under a broom tree; but behold, there was ^aan angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat!” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a round loaf of bread baked on hot coals, and a pitcher of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 But the angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him, and said, “Arise, eat; because the journey is too long for you.” 8 So he arose and ate and drank, and he journeyed in the strength of that food for ^aforty days and forty nights to ^bHoreb, the mountain of God.

9 Then he came there to a cave and spent the night there; and behold, ^athe word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 And he said, “^aI have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of armies; for the sons of Israel have abandoned Your covenant, ^btorn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. And ^cI alone am left; and they have sought to take my life.”

11 So He said, “^aGo out and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD was passing by! And ^ba great and powerful wind was tearing out the mountains and breaking the rocks in pieces before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake, a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire, ^aa sound of a gentle blowing. 13 When Elijah heard it, ^ahe wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, ^ba voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 Then he said, “^aI have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of armies; for the sons of Israel have abandoned Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they have sought to take my life.”

15 The LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; and when you have arrived, ^ayou shall anoint Hazael king over Aram. 16 You shall also anoint ^aJehu the son of Nimshi king over Israel; and you shall anoint ^bElisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17 And it shall come about that the ^aone who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu ^bshall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death. 18 ^aYet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not ^bkissed him.”

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat while he was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen in front of him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah came over to him and threw ^ahis cloak on him. 20 Then he left the oxen behind and ran after Elijah, and said, “Please ^alet me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back, for ¹what have I done to you?” 21 So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them, and ^acooked their meat with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he got up and followed Elijah and served him.

So he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you.” 8 So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food ^aforty days and forty nights to ^bHoreb, the mountain of God.

9 Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, ^athe word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He said, “^aI have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, ^btorn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And ^cI alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

11 So He said, “^aGo forth and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD was passing by! And ^ba great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire ^aa sound of a gentle blowing. 13 When Elijah heard it, ^ahe wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, ^ba voice came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 Then he said, “^aI have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

15 The LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, ^ayou shall anoint Hazael king over Aram; 16 and ^aJehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and ^bElisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 It shall come about, the ^aone who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu ^bshall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death. 18 ^aYet I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not ^bkissed him.”

19 So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw ^ahis mantle on him. 20 He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, “Please ^alet me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you.” And he said to him, “Go back again, for what have I done to you?” 21 So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and ^aboiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.
