Procurad alcanzar el amor^a; pero también desead ardientemente los dones espirituales^b, sobre todo que profeticéis^c. 2 Porque el que habla en lenguas^1a no habla a los hombres, sino a Dios, pues nadie lo entiende², sino que en su espíritu³ habla misterios^b. 3 Pero el que profetiza habla a los hombres para edificación^a, exhortación y consolación^b. 4 El que habla en lenguas^a, a sí mismo se edifica, pero el que profetiza^b edifica a la iglesia^c. 5 Yo quisiera que todos hablarais en lenguas^a, pero aún más, que profetizarais^b; pues el que profetiza es superior al que habla en lenguas, a menos de que las interprete para que la iglesia reciba edificación^c. 6 Ahora bien, hermanos, si yo voy a vosotros hablando en lenguas, ¿de qué provecho os seré a menos de que os hable por medio de revelación^a, o de conocimiento^b, o de profecía^c, o de enseñanza^d? 7 Aun las cosas inanimadas, como la flauta o el arpa, al producir un sonido, si no dan con distinción los sonidos, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que se toca en la flauta o en el arpa? 8 Porque si la trompeta da un sonido incierto, ¿quién se preparará para la batalla^a? 9 Así también vosotros, a menos de que con la boca¹ pronunciéis palabras inteligibles, ¿cómo se sabrá lo que decís²? Pues hablaréis al aire^a. 10 Hay, quizás, muchas variedades de idiomas¹ en el mundo, y ninguno carece de significado. 11 Pues si yo no sé el significado¹ de las palabras², seré para el que habla un extranjero^3a, y el que habla será un extranjero⁴ para mí⁵. 12 Así también vosotros, puesto que anheláis dones espirituales¹, procurad abundar en ellos para la edificación de la iglesia^a. 13 Por tanto, el que habla en lenguas, pida en oración para que pueda interpretar. 14 Porque si yo oro en lenguas, mi espíritu ora, pero mi entendimiento¹ queda sin fruto. 15 Entonces ¿qué^a? Oraré con el espíritu, pero también oraré con el entendimiento¹; cantaré^b con el espíritu, pero también cantaré con el entendimiento². 16 De otra manera, si bendicessolo en¹ el espíritu, ¿cómo dirá el Amén^a a tu acción de gracias^b el que ocupa el lugar del que no tiene ese don², puesto que no sabe lo que dices? 17 Porque tú das gracias bien, pero el otro no es edificado^a. 18 Doy gracias a Dios porque hablo en lenguas más que todos vosotros; 19 sin embargo, en la iglesia prefiero¹ hablar cinco palabras con mi entendimiento², para instruir también a otros, antes que diez mil palabras en lenguas.

20 Hermanos^a, no seáis niños en la manera de pensar^b; más bien, sed niños^c en la malicia, pero en la manera de pensar sed maduros. 21 En la ley^a está escrito: POR HOMBRES DE LENGUAS EXTRAÑAS Y POR BOCA¹ DE EXTRAÑOS HABLARÉ A ESTE PUEBLO, Y NI AUN ASÍ ME ESCUCHARÁN^b, dice el Señor. 22 Así que las lenguas son una señal, no para los que creen, sino para los incrédulos; pero la profecía^a es una señal, no para los incrédulos, sino para los creyentes. 23 Por tanto, si toda la iglesia se reúne y todos hablan en lenguas, y entran algunos sin ese don o son incrédulos, ¿no dirán que estáis locos^a? 24 Pero si todos profetizan^a, y entra un incrédulo, o uno sin ese don, por todos será¹ convencido^b, por todos será² juzgado; 25 los secretos de su corazón quedarán al descubierto, y él se postrará^a y adorará a Dios, declarando que en verdad Dios está entre vosotros^b.

26 ¿Qué^a hay que hacer, pues, hermanos^b? Cuando os reunís, cada cual aporte¹ salmo^c, enseñanza, revelación^d, lenguas^e o interpretación^f. Que todo se haga para edificación^g. 27 Si alguno habla en lenguas^a, que hablen dos, o a lo más tres, y por turno, y que uno interprete^b; 28 pero si no hay intérprete, que guarde silencio en la iglesia y que hable para sí y para Dios. 29 Y que dos o tres profetas^a hablen, y los demás juzguen^b. 30 Pero si a otro que está sentado le es revelado algo, el primero calle. 31 Porque todos podéis profetizar uno por uno, para que todos aprendan y todos sean exhortados. 32 Los espíritus de los profetas están sujetos a los profetas; 33 porque Dios no es Dios de confusión^a, sino de paz, como en todas las iglesias^b de los santos^c.

34 Las mujeres^1a guarden silencio en las iglesias, porque no les es permitido hablar, antes bien, que se sujeten^b como dice también la ley^c. 35 Y si quieren aprender algo, que pregunten a sus propios maridos en casa; porque no es correcto¹ que la mujer hable en la iglesia. 36 ¿Acaso la palabra de Dios salió de vosotros, osolo a vosotros ha llegado?

37 Si alguno piensa que es profeta o espiritual^a, reconozca^b que lo que os escribo es mandamiento del Señor^c. 38 Pero si alguno no reconoce esto, él no es reconocido¹.

39 Por tanto, hermanos míos, anhelad^a el profetizar^b, y no prohibáis hablar en lenguas. 40 Pero que todo se haga decentemente y con orden^a.

6 But now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I speak to you either by way of ^arevelation, or of ^bknowledge, or of ^cprophecy, or of ^dteaching? 7 Yet even lifeless instruments, whether flute or harp, in producing a sound, if they do not produce a distinction in the tones, how will it be known what is played on the flute or on the harp? 8 For if ^athe trumpet produces an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle? 9 So you too, unless you produce intelligible speech by the tongue, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will just be ^atalking to the air. 10 There are, perhaps, a great many kinds of ¹languages in the world, and none is incapable of meaning. 11 So if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be ^aunintelligible to the one who speaks, and the one who speaks will be unintelligible ¹to me. 12 So you too, since you are eager to possess ¹spiritual gifts, strive to excel for the ^aedification of the church.

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue is to pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive. 15 ^aWhat is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit, but I will pray with the mind also; I will ^bsing with the spirit, but I will sing with the mind also. 16 For otherwise, if you bless God ¹in the spirit only, how will the one who occupies the place of the ²outsider know to say ^athe “Amen” at your ^bgiving of thanks, since he does not understand what you are saying? 17 For you are giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not ^aedified. 18 I thank God, I speak in tongues more than you all; 19 nevertheless, in church I prefer to speak five words with my mind so that I may instruct others also, rather than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 ^aBrothers and sisters, ^bdo not be children in your thinking; yet in evil ^cbe infants, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In ^athe ¹Law it is written: “^bBY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord. 22 So then, tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but ^aprophecy is not for unbelievers, but for those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church gathers together and all the people speak in tongues, and ¹outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that ^ayou are insane? 24 But if all ^aprophesy, and an unbeliever or an ¹outsider enters, he is ^bconvicted by all, he is called to account by all; 25 ^athe secrets of his heart are disclosed; and so he will ^bfall on his face and worship God, ^cdeclaring that God is certainly among you.

26 ^aWhat is the outcome then, ^bbrothers and sisters? When you assemble, ^ceach one has a ^dpsalm, has a ^eteaching, has a ^frevelation, has a ^gtongue, has an ^hinterpretation. ⁱAll things are to be done for edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a ^atongue, it must be by two or at the most three, and each one in turn, and one is to ^binterpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he is to keep silent in church; and have him speak to himself and to God. 29 Have two or three ^aprophets speak, and have the others ^bpass judgment. 30 But if a revelation is made to another who is seated, then the first one is to keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all may be ¹exhorted; 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets; 33 for God is not a God of ^aconfusion, but of peace.

As in ^ball the churches of the ^1csaints, 34 the women are to ^akeep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but ^bare to subject themselves, just as ^cthe Law also says. 35 If they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is ¹improper for a woman to speak in church. 36 Or was it from you that the word of God first went out? Or has it come to you only?

37 ^aIf anyone thinks that he is a prophet or ^bspiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you ^care the Lord’s commandment. 38 But if anyone does not recognize this, ¹he is not recognized.

39 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, ^aearnestly desire to ^bprophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 But ^aall things must be done properly and in an orderly way.
