12 After the ^adeportation to Babylon: Jeconiah fathered ¹Shealtiel, and Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel fathered ¹Abihud, Abihud fathered Eliakim, and Eliakim fathered Azor. 14 Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, and Achim fathered Eliud. 15 Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob. 16 Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, ^awho is called the ¹Messiah.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the ^adeportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the ^bdeportation to Babylon to the ¹Messiah, fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus the ¹Messiah was as follows: when His ^amother Mary had been ²betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was ^bfound to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, since he was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her, planned to ^1asend her away secretly. 20 But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “^aJoseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for ¹the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a Son; and ^ayou shall name Him Jesus, for ¹He ^bwill save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this ¹took place so that what was ^aspoken by the Lord through ²the prophet would be fulfilled: 23 “^aBEHOLD, THE VIRGIN WILL ^1bCONCEIVE AND GIVE BIRTH TO A SON, AND THEY SHALL NAME HIM ²IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “^cGOD WITH US.” 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 ¹but kept her a virgin until she ^agave birth to a Son; and ^bhe named Him Jesus.

2 Abraham ¹was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of ²Judah and his brothers who became the twelve tribes of Israel. 3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, ^aPerez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram. 4 Ram was the father of Aminadab, Aminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by ¹Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse. 6 Jesse was the father of ¹David the king.

David ^awas the father of Solomon by ²Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. 12 After the ^adeportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by ¹whom Jesus was born, ^awho is called the Messiah (Christ) .

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen; from David to the Babylonian ^adeportation (exile) , fourteen generations; and from the Babylonian ^bdeportation to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His ^amother Mary had been ¹betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was ^bfound to be with child by the power of the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her promised husband, being a just and righteous man and not wanting to expose her publicly to shame, planned ^ato send her away and divorce her quietly. 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “^aJoseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the Child who has been ¹conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a Son, and ^ayou shall name Him Jesus (The LORD is salvation) , for He ^bwill ¹save His people from their sins.” 22 All this happened in order to fulfill what the Lord had ^aspoken through the ¹prophet Isaiah: 23 “^aBEHOLD, THE ¹VIRGIN SHALL ^bBE WITH CHILD AND GIVE BIRTH TO A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL”—which, when translated, means, “^cGOD WITH US.” Is 7:14 24 Then Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and he took Mary to his home as his wife, 25 but he kept her a virgin until she had ^agiven birth to a Son her firstborn child; and ^bhe named Him Jesus (The LORD is salvation) .
