Respondiendo Él, le dijo*: Tú lo dices. 3 Y los principales sacerdotes le acusaban de muchas cosas¹. 4 De nuevo Pilato le preguntó, diciendo: ¿No respondes nada? Mira de cuántas cosas te acusan. 5 Pero Jesús no respondió nada más^a; de modo que Pilato estaba asombrado.

6 ^aAhora bien, en cada fiesta él acostumbraba soltarles un preso, el que ellos pidieran. 7 Y uno llamado Barrabás había sido encarcelado con los sediciosos que habían cometido homicidio en la insurrección. 8 Y subiendo la multitud, comenzó a pedirle que hiciera como siempre les había hecho. 9 Entonces Pilato les contestó, diciendo: ¿Queréis que os suelte al Rey de los judíos? 10 Porque sabía que los principales sacerdotes le habían entregado por envidia. 11 Pero los principales sacerdotes incitaron a la multitud para que le pidiera que en vez de Jesús les soltara a Barrabás^a. 12 Y Pilato, tomando de nuevo la palabra, les decía: ¿Qué haré, entonces, con el que llamáis el Rey de los judíos? 13 Ellos le respondieron a gritos¹: ¡Crucifícale! 14 Y Pilato les decía: ¿Por qué? ¿Qué mal ha hecho? Y ellos gritaban aún más: ¡Crucifícale! 15 Pilato, queriendo complacer a la multitud, les soltó a Barrabás; y después de hacer azotar a Jesús, le entregó para que fuera crucificado^a.

16 ^aEntonces los soldados le llevaron dentro del palacio^1b, es decir, al Pretorio, y convocaron* a toda la cohorte² romana^c. 17 Le vistieron* de púrpura, y después de tejer una corona de espinas, se la pusieron; 18 y comenzaron a vitorearle: ¡Salve, Rey de los judíos! 19 Le golpeaban la cabeza con una caña¹ y le escupían, y poniéndose de rodillas le hacían reverencias. 20 Y después de haberse burlado de Él, le quitaron la púrpura, le pusieron sus ropas y le sacaron* para crucificarle.

21 ^aY obligaron* a uno que pasaba y que venía del campo, Simón de Cirene, el padre de Alejandro y Rufo, a que llevara la cruz de Jesús¹.

22 ^aLe llevaron* al lugar llamado Gólgota, que traducido significa: Lugar de la Calavera^b. 23 Y trataron de darle vino mezclado con mirra, pero Él no lo tomó^a. 24 Cuando le crucificaron*, se repartieron* sus vestidos, echando suertes¹ sobre ellos para decidir lo que cada uno tomaría^a. 25 Era la hora tercera^1a cuando² le crucificaron. 26 Y la inscripción de la acusación contra Él decía¹: EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS^a. 27 Crucificaron* con Él a dos ladrones; uno a su derecha y otro a su izquierda. 28 ¹Y se cumplió la Escritura que dice: Y con los transgresores fue contado. 29 Y los que pasaban le injuriaban, meneando la cabeza^a y diciendo: ¡Bah! Tú que destruyes el templo y en tres días lo reedificas^b, 30 ¡sálvate a ti mismo descendiendo de la cruz! 31 De igual manera, también los principales sacerdotes junto con los escribas, burlándose de Él entre ellos, decían: A otros salvó, a sí mismo no puede salvarse^1a. 32 Que este¹ Cristo, el Rey de Israel^a, descienda ahora de la cruz, para que veamos y creamos. Y los que estaban crucificados con Él también le insultaban^b.

^aEarly in the morning the chief priests with the elders, scribes, and the entire ^1bCouncil immediately held a consultation; and they bound Jesus and led Him away, and turned Him over to Pilate. 2 ^aPilate questioned Him: “So You are the King of the Jews?” And He answered him, “It is as you say.” 3 And the chief priests started accusing Him ¹of many things. 4 But Pilate questioned Him again, saying, “Do You offer nothing in answer? See how many charges they are bringing against You!” 5 But Jesus ^asaid nothing further in answer, so Pilate was amazed.

6 ^aNow at the Passover Feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. 7 And the one named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the revolt. 8 And the crowd went up and began asking Pilate to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. 9 Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd ^ato ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And responding again, Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 They shouted ¹back, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate said to them, “Why, what ¹evil has He done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 Intent on satisfying the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus ^aflogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.

16 ^aNow the soldiers took Him away into ^bthe ¹palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman ^2ccohort. 17 And they *dressed Him in ¹purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; 18 and they began saluting Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they repeatedly beat His head with a ¹reed and spit on Him, and kneeling, they bowed down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the ¹purple cloak off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 ^aAnd they *compelled a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and ^bRufus), to carry His cross.

22 ^aThen they *brought Him to the place ^bGolgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him ^awine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *^adivided up His garments among themselves, casting ¹lots for them to decide ²what each man would take. 25 Now it was the ^1athird hour ²when they crucified Him. 26 The inscription of the charge against Him ¹read, “^aTHE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two ¹rebels with Him, one on His right and one on His left.² 29 Those passing by were ¹hurling abuse at Him, ^ashaking their heads and saying, “Ha! You who are going to ^bdestroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking Him among themselves and saying, “^aHe saved others; ¹He cannot save Himself! 32 Let this Christ, ^athe King of Israel, come down now from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” ^bThose who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 ^aWhen the ^1bsixth hour came, darkness ²fell over the whole land until the ^3cninth hour. 34 At the ^1aninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “^bELOI, ELOI, LEMA SABAKTANEI?” which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard Him, they began saying, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “¹Let us see if Elijah comes to take Him down.” 37 ^aBut Jesus let out a loud cry, and ¹died. 38 ^aAnd the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 ^aAnd when the centurion, who was standing ¹right in front of Him, saw that He ²died in this way, he said, “Truly this Man was ³the Son of God!”

40 ^aNow there were also some women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of ¹James ^bthe ²Less and Joses, and ^cSalome. 41 When He was in Galilee, they used to follow Him and ^aserve Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

42 ^aWhen evening had already come, since it was ^bthe preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a ^aprominent member of the Council, who was himself also ^bwaiting for the kingdom of God; and he ^cgathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Now Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. 45 And after learning this from ^athe centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 Joseph bought a linen cloth, took Him down, wrapped Him in the linen cloth, and laid Him in a tomb which had been cut out in the rock; and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 ^aMary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were watching to see where He was laid.

Matt 27:15-26; Luke 23:18-25; John 18:39-19:16 7 The man called Barabbas was imprisoned with the insurrectionists (revolutionaries) who had committed murder in the civil rebellion. 8 The crowd came up and began asking Pilate to do as he usually did for them. 9 Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to set free for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had turned Jesus over to him because of envy and resentment. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd ^ato get him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 Again Pilate answered, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 They screamed back, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate asked them, “Why, what has He done that is evil?” But they screamed all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, set Barabbas free for them; and after having Jesus ^1ascourged, he handed Him over to his soldiers to be crucified. 16 ^aThe soldiers led Him away into ^bthe palace (that is, the ¹Praetorium), and they called together the entire Roman ^cbattalion of 600 soldiers. Matt 27:27-31 17 They dressed Him up in a ranking Roman officer’s robe of purple, and after twisting together a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him; 18 and they began saluting and mocking Him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 They kept beating Him on the head with a ¹reed and spitting on Him, and kneeling and bowing in mock homage to Him. Is 50:6 20 After they had mocked Him, they took off the purple robe and put His own clothes on Him. And they led Him out of the city to crucify Him.

21 ^aThey forced into service a passer-by coming in from the countryside, Simon of ¹Cyrene (the father of Alexander and ^bRufus), ²to carry His cross. Matt 27:32; Luke 23:26

22 ^aThen they brought Him to the place called ^bGolgotha, which is translated, Place of a ¹Skull. Matt 27:33-44; Luke 23:33-43; John 19:17-24 23 They tried to give Him ^1awine mixed with myrrh to dull the pain, but He would not take it. 24 And they crucified Him, and ^1adivided up His clothes among themselves, casting lots for them to see who should take what. Ps 22:18 25 It was the ^athird hour (9:00 a.m.) when they crucified Him. Ps 22:14-16 26 The inscription of the accusation against Him had been written above Him: “^aTHE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 They crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [¹And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “He was counted with the transgressors.”] Is 53:12 29 Those who were passing by were insulting Him with abusive and insolent language, ^awagging their heads as a sign of contempt, and saying, “Ha! You who would ^bdestroy the temple and rebuild it in only three days, John 2:19 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were ridiculing and mocking Him among themselves and saying, “^aHe saved others from death; He cannot save Himself! Ps 22:7, 8 32 Let the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed) , ^athe King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe and trust in Him!” ^bThose who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 ^aWhen the ^bsixth hour (noon) came, darkness covered the whole land until the ^cninth hour (3:00 p.m.) . Matt 27:45-56; Luke 23:44-49 34 And at the ^aninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “^bELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?”—which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” Ps 22:1 35 Some of the bystanders heard Him and said, “Look! He is calling for ¹Elijah!” 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah is coming to take Him down.” Ps 69:21; Matt 27:48, 50; Luke 23:36; John 19:29, 30 37 ^aBut Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed out His last voluntarily, sovereignly dismissing and releasing His spirit from His body in submission to His Father’s plan. 38 ^aAnd the veil of the Holy of Holies of the temple was torn in two from ¹top to bottom. 39 ^aWhen the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last being fully in control, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

40 ^aNow some women also were watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and ¹Mary the mother of James ^bthe Less and of Joses, and ^2cSalome. John 19:25 41 When Jesus was in Galilee, they used to accompany him and ^aminister to Him; and there were also many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

42 ^aWhen evening had already come, because it was ^bthe preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Deut 21:22, 23; Matt 27:57-61; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a ^aprominent and respected member of the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) , who was himself ^bwaiting for the kingdom of God—and he ^ccourageously dared to go in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate ¹wondered if He was dead by this time only six hours after being crucified, and he summoned the centurion and asked him whether He was already dead. 45 And when he learned from ^athe centurion that Jesus was in fact dead, he gave the body to Joseph by granting him permission to remove it. 46 So Joseph purchased a fine linen cloth for ¹wrapping the body, and after taking Jesus down from the cross, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and placed Him in a tomb which had been cut out of rock. Then he rolled a large, wheel-shaped stone against the entrance of the tomb. Is 53:9 47 ^aMary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were carefully watching to see where He was laid.
